7.3 Two Best Practices of the institution:

1. Title of the Practice

II. Improving Teaching – Learning Process

2. Goal • To ensure the completion of syllabus according to the academic plan of each

department

• To encourage teachers to adapt to technological advancements including ICT adoption in class room Teaching.

• To improve pass percentage and enhance the number of ranks bagged by the college at the University level examinations.

Page 46: ESTD: 1945 · Basaveshwar Science College, Bagalkot AQAR for the year -2016-17 Page 1 B.V.V.Sangha’s ESTD: 1945 Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) 2016-17

Basaveshwar Science College, Bagalkot AQAR for the year -2016-17 Page 46

3. The context

• The syllabus coverage in some cases is being hurried and towards the end of the semester information is being crammed at once. This sluggish coverage initially and hurried coverage later should be avoided giving enough time to student in comprehending the topics and assimilating the facts.

• The teachers find it difficult to keep pace with the techno – savvy student learners. It has become essential for some of the teachers to adapt to the latest pedagogic styles and include ICT in class room teaching. The mismatch between the student learner and the teacher in the use and comfort of handling varieties of tools available for teaching – learning needs to be bridged.

4. The practice

• Academic plan along with the calendar of events is uploaded on the website for information to students.

• The teaching – learning committee along with the heads of different departments monitor the pace of coverage of the syllabus.

• Feedback is obtained from students regarding the content delivery by different teachers.

• Frequent assignments, tests and evaluation are conducted to improve performance in the semester – end examinations.

• Computer science department staff trains the teachers in the use of Power Point Presentations, browsing the internet for useful resources, use of Google docs for information sharing, etc.

5. Evidence of Success

• Some of the teachers have adopted modern pedagogic styles and ICT in their classes.

• Some departments have created digital library.

• Appropriately paced and timely completion of syllabus.

• Increased attendance in the classes.

6. Problems encountered and Resources required

• Development of animation based power point presentations in teaching, particularly in science subjects, has been hindered due to the want of in –house technical expertise.

1. Title of the Practice Implementation of Uniform Dress Code for Students

Page 47: ESTD: 1945 · Basaveshwar Science College, Bagalkot AQAR for the year -2016-17 Page 1 B.V.V.Sangha’s ESTD: 1945 Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) 2016-17

Basaveshwar Science College, Bagalkot AQAR for the year -2016-17 Page 47

2. Goal

The goal behind the implementation of Uniform Dress Code among the students is to inculcate the feeling of uniformity with respect to their social and economic status in the society. Secondly, it helps in maintaining discipline among them which is a key factor in their development as future responsible citizens of the country. It also helps the college administration in identifying anti-social elements and/or outsiders who often tend to mix with the regular students in order to create nuisance in the college premises. The Uniform Dress Code is also useful in identifying the students of this college and those from other colleges during the time of examinations since this college is the Examination Centre for four more colleges in the nearby areas.

3. The Context

Generally there is the system of Uniform Dress Code at the school level up to Higher Secondary level both in government and private schools in the State. Implementing it in the schools is not very difficult because the students at this level are not fully exposed to fashion and are not independent decision makers. However, when they come to the college level, they have a penchant to display their personal characteristics as regards dress and fashion. For the same reason the implementation of Uniform Dress Code for students was done after a long debate among the staff members and have not been able to adopt any such practice owing to resistance from the student community. However, the college could convince the student representatives and for this good practice and the college was eventually able to successfully implement it.

4. The Practice

The resolution to implement the Uniform Dress Code was passed in the Staff Council Meeting. Subsequently, the Uniform Dress Code was implemented in the college from the academic year 2011-12. For the male students white coloured shirts, for female students navy blue coloured Salwar and white coloured kurta were prescribed. However, they are exempted from wearing the uniform dress on Wednesday and Saturday. The practice of Uniform Dress Code is unique in the Higher education system since it inculcates the spirit of equality among the student community with regard to their social and economic status. It also highlights the spirit of discipline in the college campus. Similarly, when they are in the uniform the regular students of the college would not indulge in anti-social activities even outside the college campus since their identification becomes easy. To maintain the consistency of the practice, the Disciplinary Action Committee of the college does flying check-ups in the classrooms at random. And those students who are found without uniform dress are not allowed to attend the classes. 5. Evidence of Success

The evidence of success with regard to the targets set by the college administration can be clearly observed with respect to a sharp decline in the presence of anti-social and/or outside elements in the college premises resulting in good maintenance of discipline and decorum within the campus. It is in the beginning of every session when new entrants come to the college that it takes some time for all the students to come in uniform dress. Past photographs of the gathering are available in the college showing students wearing uniform dress code.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required

As has already been mentioned the main problem in implementing this practice was from

student leadership who resisted it. Effective convincing by teachers students agreed to practice it.

7.4 Contribution to environmental awareness / protection 1. The use of plastic bags is avoided in the campus and the authority is planning to declare the

entire campus as “No Plastic Zone”.

2. The college campus is declared as ‘No Tobacco Zone’.

3. The main findings of the audit show that, in general, all the departments and students are aware about the need for environmental protection at a general level. It was also observed that a number of best practices such as maintaining potted plants, introducing plastic free zone etc. are followed in the campus.

4. College is positive about increasing greenery by planting in front of the college and maintaining potted plants as much as possible.

5. Seminars and awareness programmes are conducted periodically on Nature and natural resources, wildlife for the conservation of Biodiversity.

7.5 Whether environmental audit was conducted?

NO 7.6 Any other relevant information the institution wishes to add

• Planning to use LED bulbs wherever possible.

• Enhancing Rain Water Harvesting.

• Inculcate patriotism among the students.

• Create awareness regarding social responsibility amongst the students.
