buena calidad.

Regular la iluminación?
• Ofrece información a diferentes grupos.

• Luz dirigida hacia arriba.
• Luz y electricidad malgastada.

Refineria Premcor – Una Historia Exitosa
• Se Apantallaron 20.000 Luminarias Externas!• Se Ahorra Cerca de US$200.000 Anuales en Costos de Energía.
¿Cuándo?
Solo donde se necesite.
• Traspaso de luz.
• Luz y electricidad malgastada.

Ilumine hacia abajo.

Effects on WildlifeNatural light & its predictability regulate natural processes
Wildlife concerns due to obtrusive light includeHabitat DisturbanceWildlife BehaviorWildlife Survival
The alteration or extension of day-length– dimishes habitat function (shelter, protection, food, …)
– disrupts natural diurnal rhythms of organisms
– may cause deaths
– is particularly harmful to nocturnal animals

Effects on Wildlife
Insects Flight, navigation, migration disturbance Disruption of natural cycles and daily behaviour
= natural imbalance Phototactic insects become easy prey ... some
insects abandon flight
"Street lights act as vacuum cleaners (aspiradora) for many species of insects. Mercury vapor attracts ~ 2.2 x more insects than HPS." – Dr. G. Eisenheis (Germany)
Effects on WildlifeMammals Nocturnal mammals such as bats, shrews and
weasels are highly affected by light For bats, light acts as a barrier which impedes
foraging and results in isolation of bat communities Animals such as hedgehogs suffer disorientation
when faced by oncoming lights • Endangered cat species (Pallas cats) were observed by
zoo breeding program observers to have reproductive difficulties in bright zones. After relocation to dark zones, reproduction activities returned to normal.
• Altered behavior with 10% - 50% of full moon
Effects on Wildlife
Birds Disorientation during flight due to sky beams, lit man-made obstacles, etc. Migrating birds fly more at night than day. Impoverished navigation during migration Nocturnal birds such as owls, nightjars are forced to leave foraging area Some local colonies of Cory’s shearwaters have been abandoned
FLAP – Fatal Light Awareness Program – successful Canadian public program aimed at reducing birds killed from collisions with lighted city buildings.
Effects on Wildlife
Fish
Civil court case involving nocturnal seatrout species in Scotland: Fisherman claim seatrout fishing degraded by light pollution from adjacent property. Court supports sport fisherman with judgement supported by expert testimony on seatrouts' nocturnal behavior.
In the state of Washington (USA), light trespassing into fish habitat from unshielded lights on Cedar River trails resulted in interference with sockeye salmon fry migration and an increase in predation pressures. Light shielding by Washington Department of Transportation reduced light trespass, enhanced habitat, and improved fish migratory passage.
Effects on Wildlife
Amphibians
Most frogs are attracted to artificial night lighting. This often attracts them to roadways where they die.
The RNA/DNA cycle for frogs is effected by artificial night lighting.
There is a global population decline in amphibians. Artificial night lighting has been shown to have a significant effect on salamanders in the lab.
Effects on Wildlife
Reptiles
Newly hatched marine turtles move towards artificial lights and away from sea (making them vulnerable to predators, automobiles, drying out, exhaustion, … )
Nesting turtles avoid illuminated beaches and must travel longer distances
Some species will nest under LPS, but some will not. The habitat risk for these endangered species led to
the first outdoor lighting ordinances in Florida, USA for conservation purposes.

lighting for the majority of the light.
Salud
• Un estresante sico-social.
• Reloj biológico.– Impacto inmunológico.
• Desorden del sueño.
• Luz enceguecedora.
Health Summary
• Circadian rhythm is a powerful one for ALL wildlife and for humans.
• Melatonin 'spikes,' for example, are found in many organisms from single celled amoeba to humans.
• Better night lighting helps a lot and saves energy.
• As to bad lighting …
Why do we do that given such adverse effects?

Razones:
• Responsable por el ambiente,
• Sensible economicamente .
• ¡La buena iluminación tiene un gran valor!
• ¡Todos ganamos!
