The SGCP believes that the BPS should be the leading, authoritative voice in the education, training, practice and development of the coaching psychology profession in the UK, and the aim of our work is to formalise educational standards for coaching psychology, and support a more robust BPS coaching psychology register. In doing so, we will also be seeking re-designation of the Special Group in Coaching Psychology to the Division of Coaching Psychology. I’m pleased to be able to provide an update of our progress and information regarding next steps. It is proposed (subject to approval) that the criteria for full membership of the newly established Division of Coaching Psychology will be as follows:

GBC + completion of an accredited MSc in Coaching Psychology followed byStage 2 training (supervised experienceSociety Qualification) orGBC + assessment of a portfolio of professional practice against Standards forChartership in Coaching Psychology orCompletion of a non-accredited research PhD identifiable as being based inCoaching Psychology post GBC

It is also expected that there will be lsquoin trainingrsquo membership for psychologists intraining who hold Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership and are workingtowards Chartered status We continue to welcome members who are not currentlyeligible for the above grades but have an interest in coaching psychology and it isour intention to retain a general membership tier for those who fall into thiscategory In pursuit of this we have written two sets of standards Standards for theAccreditation of Masters Programmes in Coaching Psychology and Standards forChartership in Coaching Psychology These have now been approved by the Partnership and Accreditation Committeeand we hope that these will be formally approved by the Board of Trustees inDecember 2020 The next phase of work consists of

Holding a general meeting of the SGCP and asking members to vote on theproposed re-designation of the special group to a Division of the BPSMapping the standards for Chartership and designing assessment criteria andportfolio componentsBuilding a business case for a society qualification in coaching psychology orsupervised practice route and developing that routeReviewing and redesigning the Register of Coaching Psychologists to includetiered registration and apply for accreditation of the register through theProfessional Standards AuthorityEstablishing an Education and Training Committee and training andestablishing a bank of supervisors and assessorsreviewers

Our ambition is that the Register of Coaching Psychologists will have 3 tierslevelswhich will provide all members (Chartered in-training and general) to have anopportunity to access the register at a level that appropriately reflects their levelof training in coaching psychology

Call to action These are exciting times but we still have a lot of work ahead of us We are ofcourse interested to hear from any members of SGCP who have thoughts orcontributions to make particularly if you feel that you could usefully contribute tothe next phase of work
