Establish a Community of Practices (CoP) and a network of

expertise to share Geo-DRM information and best practices

among DRM stakeholders in the Asia pacific region


IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO SHARE A SIMILAR CONCERN, A SET OF PROBLEMS OR A TOPIC. AND WHO WANTS TO DEEPEN THEIR KNOWLEDGE BY INTERACTING ON AN ON GOING BASIS.

MEMBERSHIP OF A COMMUNITY OF PRACTICES IS VOLUNTARY

A COP HAS A DOMAIN ( TOPIC WHICH MEMBERS HAVE A SHARED INTEREST), COMMUNITY ( MEMBERS WHO SHOULD ENCOURAGE SHARING), PRACTICE ( THE PARTICULAR KNOWLEDGE OF THE ISSUE COMMUNITY MEMBERS SHARE)

What does the CoP hope to achieve

Aims to increase the awareness on the importance of GEO-REF information sharing for DM by encouraging the key stakeholders

to actively participate in the network activities.

The network envisages to increase the interaction of regional policy makers, practitioners and experts with special

reference to LDCs, LLDCs and SIDs


What is our Strategy?

Information sharing

§The CoP shall attempt to share high quality analytical GEO-REF information for effective disaster risk reduction

§CoP shall attempt to develop a close collaboration among policy makers and experts with special reference to LDCs, LLDCs and SIDs


Structure of the CoP

Initially the GEO-REF CoP shall be an Informal open community primarily of project meeting participants. Subsequently Government agencies, ministries, technical /scientific institutions and academia with a strong interest to contribute/use/share GIS based information for DRR and development shall be the members

.


Functioning of the CoP

UNESCAP shall function as the secretariat for the CoP linking the policy makers and experts in sharing vital information for disaster risk reduction and development.

Challenges to establishment and sustaining CoP

• With the increase in power of connectivity through social media and other modes of communication everyone is building ones own personal and expert networks

• Hence, the legitimacy of Knowledge partnerships and networks are becoming more dependant on the willingness, support and hard work of many individuals rather than existence of partnership agreements and contracts between institutions.
