2 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Thursday, 30 April, 2009

Thursday, 30 April, 2009 * Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s DesirePERSPECTIVES

The goal of the entire people of Myanmaris emergence of a peaceful, modern anddeveloped nation and therefore they are workingin concert with the government to realize theirgoal.

Nowadays, as the border areasdevelopment project, the special developmentproject and the rural development project arebeing implemented in each and every region ofthe nation, there have been remarkableimprovements in transport, education, health, economy and security, especially in the borderregions.

Shan State (East) is the easternmost regionof the nation and has common borders withneighbouring countries. This being so, it is astrategic area for regional relations and security. In the past, Kengtung and its environs lackedpeace and security owing to frequent outbreaksof fighting among national races, a legacy left bythe divide-and-rule policy of the colonialists.

Border areas where reports of guns andblasts of bombs were quite common in the pastare now able to keep pace with inner regions ofthe Union as far as development is concerned. Itis mainly due to prevalence of peace and stability, unity and amity among national races and theirunited efforts. Without sticking to any isms, allthe national races should cultivate Union Spiritand try their level best to maintain suchfavourable environments as the rule of law andcommunity peace.

The government has been steadfastlyworking towards a new democratic nation theentire people have longed for in line with theseven-step Road Map. And as the constitutionhas been approved by the vast majority ofnational people, elections are going to be held inthe year 2010.

A peaceful, modern and developed nationwill surely emerge in the near future if thenational brethren of the Union continue working, hand in hand with the government, towardstheir cherished goal.

in an interview published on Tuesday that he expectsPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to theprinciple of Palestinian statehood — something theIsraeli leader has balked at doing since taking office amonth ago.

Netanyahu is coming under increasing pressurefrom Washington to resume peacemaking with the Pal-estinians, a process designed ultimately to create a Pal-estinian state that would live alongside Israel peace-fully within fixed borders.

In what could be seen as a mild slap from the US,Israel’s ceremonial President, Shimon Peres, willmeet President Barack Obama next week, beforeNetanyahu travels to Washington in mid-May. Astatement from Peres’ office said he would attendnext week’s conference of AIPAC, the pro-Israellobby, and meet Obama.

Peres, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is a world-re-nowned Mideast peacemaker, while Netanyahu has ahawkish reputation. Netanyahu took office on 31March amid predictions of a clash with the Obamaadministration over peacemaking.—Internet

BAGHDAD, 29 April—Iraq is falling far behindschedule in creating a sys-tem to maintain its ownmilitary equipment, costingAmerican taxpayers hun-dreds of millions of dollarsto fill in the gaps, accordingto a new US audit.

The report highlightssome of the fundamentalworries among Americancommanders as they lookpast the US military exitfrom Iraq at the end of2011: Will Iraqi security

forces be able to handletasks as basic as keepingtheir vehicles on the road?

The US has spent bil-lions of dollars to developIraq’s security forces withan emphasis in recentyears on developing Iraq’smaintenance and supplycapabilities — seen as es-sential for the country tomaintain a self-sufficientforce after the lifeline fromWashington is trimmedback. It’s part of the Pen-tagon’s wide-ranging

plans to train and upgradeIraq security forces fromstreet-level police unitsand rebuild Iraqi naval andair power.

But the audit — by theSpecial Inspector Generalfor Iraq Reconstruction —found a pattern of negli-gence and shortcomings bythe Iraqi military in plan-ning for the basic needs ofthe military: repairing andmaintaining equipment andsupplying troops.

WASHINGTON, 29 April—Top climate envoyssaid they were more opti-mistic about sealing aglobal warming deal thisyear after a US-led meet-ing of major economies, but they sparred on thelevel of their commit-ments.

US President BarackObama, who championsaggressive action againstglobal warming, invitednegotiators from 17 othermajor economies includ-ing developing powerssuch as China and India tomeet in Washington.

The talks came as theclock ticks to a Decembermeeting in Copenhagenthat is meant to approve anew global treaty to slowdown the planet’s risingtemperatures.

“I come out of thismeeting a bit more opti-mistic,” Todd Stern, thechief US negotiator on cli-mate change, told report-

ers. Stern acknowledgedthat much of the conversa-tion was general in scopebut said it was not a “head-butting exercise.”

“Believe me, I’m nottrying to oversell,” Sternsaid. “I would not down-play or underestimate thedifficulty of getting anagreement in Copenh-agen.”

His remarks were ech-oed by German Environ-mental Minister SigmarGabriel, who said: “I’mquite optimistic that wewill succeed in Decem-ber.”

But he said that emerg-ing countries still did notwant to make bindingcommitments on howmuch they will cut carbonemissions blamed for glo-bal warming.

WASHINGTON, 29 April—Astronomers tracking amysterious blast of energy called a gamma ray burstsaid on Tuesday they had snapped a photograph ofthe most distant object in the universe — a smudge13 billion light-years away.

Hawaii’s Gemini Observatory caught the imageearlier this month after a satellite first detected theburst. “Our infrared observations from Gemini im-mediately suggested that this was an unusually dis-tant burst, these images were the smoking gun,” saidEdo Berger of the Harvard Smithsonian Center forAstrophysics.

Distortions in the light signature of the object showit is 13 billion years old — at the speed of light, 13billion light-years away. A light-year is 6 trillion miles(10 trillion km). This makes it easily the most distantobject ever seen by humanity, Berger said.—Internet

While the findings donot immediately offerhope for a treatment, they do help explain theunderlying causes of thecondition, which affectsas many as one in 150children, according tothe US Centres for Dis-ease Control and Preven-tion.

“These findings estab-lish that genetic factorsplay a strong role in au-tism spectrum disorder,”National Institutes ofHealth acting director DrRaynard Kington said ina statement. “Detailedanalysis of the genes andhow they affect brain de-velopment is likely toyield better strategies fordiagnosing and treatingchildren with autism.

MANCHESTER, 29April—Sir AlexFerguson has insistedNani has a future atManchester United andattributed the Portuguesewinger’s lack of first-team opportunities thisseason to the form ofKorean rival ParkJi-Sung.

Nani, who was substi-tuted at half-time duringthe 5-2 win overTottenham at the week-

A meeting betweenCity chief executiveGarry Cook and BarcaPresident Joan Laporta inLondon on Monday trig-gered a flurry of reportssuggesting a 40-million-pound bid (58 milliondollars) for theCameroon striker was inthe offing.

But Hughes claimedthe talks were simply partof an effort to establishcloser links to Europe’stop clubs following thetakeover of City by theAbu Dhabi UnitedGroup, who financed lastyear’s 32-million-poundacquisition of Robinho.

“There has been
