In last week’s lesson, we studied Jesus, Mary, and Joseph’s flight to Egypt and their return to Israel when Jesus was a small child. In the years between those events and the events we’ll study this week, Jesus grew up and passed into adulthood. When this week’s story took place, Jesus was about 30 years old and was ready to begin his ministry.

John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin and was sent by God to “prepare the way for the Lord” (Matthew 3:3). When the Jewish leaders—the Pharisees and Sadducees—came to see John preaching repentance and baptizing people in the Jordan River, John condemned them for their hypocrisy (Matthew 3:7-10). And he told of the one who was coming, Jesus, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire (verse 11).

John also said that he wasn’t worthy to carry Jesus’ sandals—one of the most menial of tasks. Now Jesus approached him at the Jordan River and asked to be baptized. John, a sinner, saw a sinless Jesus standing before him and didn’t feel worthy to baptize him. John knew about Jesus’ miraculous conception and the supernatural events that followed, so John thought it would be more appropriate if Jesus baptized him!

Jesus didn’t deny what John was suggesting by his reluctance to baptize him. Instead, he affirmed it, saying in essence, “You’re right, but we need to do this anyway.”

Jesus’ baptism accomplished several things. First, it announced the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Second, it affirmed that he was who John thought he was—the Son of God—as confirmed by God’s own voice. Third, it allowed Jesus to identify with the sinfulness of human beings though he was without sin. Finally, Jesus’ baptism gave all of us an example to follow.

We don’t know precisely what happened when “heaven was opened” (Matthew 3:16). However, for Matthew to have made such a comment, something of the radiance of God’s glory must have been visible. We also don’t know exactly how the Spirit of God resembled a dove as it descended on Jesus. But we do know that those who were there knew it was God’s Spirit. God’s pronouncement from heaven certainly didn’t announce anything new to Jesus. He knew that the Father loved him and approved of him. God’s pronouncement was for the others who were present and for those of us who would hear the story centuries later.

All three persons of the Trinity were present at Jesus’ baptism. The Son was baptized, showing his dedication to his mission; the Holy Spirit came upon him; and the Father spoke his love and approval. What a wonderful picture of the God who created us and provided a way for us to have an eternal relationship with him!

Bible Background for Leaders

Jesus Is BaptizedMatthew 3:13-17

Devotion for LeadersJesus is incredible. We should be thankful every day to the Son of God—for introducing us to God and for revealing the beauty of a life lived for him.

Weaving Faith Into Your Life: In his life on earth, Jesus introduced people to God. After Jesus ascended into heaven, his disciples followed his example and led others to believe in God and in Jesus’ sacrifice. We should follow the same example to lead others to the same belief. What can you do today to help someone else believe?

Why We Worship for LeadersJesus came to earth as a human being, yet he is also fully God. The book of Hebrews says that Jesus is “the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being.” As we get to know Jesus through the help of the Holy Spirit, we see and understand the Father. Today’s Bible story about Jesus’ baptism demonstrates the presence of the Trinity. We see how Jesus, the Son, submitted to his Father in all things and was affirmed by the presence of the Holy Spirit.

We learn about the character of God as we see the mutual submission of the Father and Son. Jesus “did not consider equality with God something to be grasped…he humbled himself and became obedient to death.” Likewise, the Father “exalted [Jesus] to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name” (Philippians 2:6b, 8b, 9). Together, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit model perfect love. What a reason to worship!

Easy Prep for LeadersLet’s Praise God!

• Photocopy the “Family Survey” (p. 87) and cut it apart so you have one survey for each child.

• Gather four hats: a construction worker’s hard hat, a crown, a grapevine wreath to represent a crown of thorns, and a hat with a mirror taped or glued to the brim.

• Write Hebrews 1:1-3 (NIV) on a sheet of newsprint and post it where kids can see it.

Bible Story Puzzle—Place each of the following items in a separate brown paper lunch bag: a jar of water with the lid taped on, a sandal, a piece of fake fur, a clump of fiberfill batting, a feather, and a megaphone or microphone. You’ll need six Bibles.

Father, Son, and Spirit—Cut 10-inch lengths of gold, red, and blue craft cord. You’ll need one of each color for each child. You’ll also need scissors and masking tape. Make one bracelet before the worship session. (See the activity for instructions.)

Preschool Activities—Refer to the preschool pages for preparations.

Web Help—Get bonus leader tips and ideas at kidsownworship.com.

Sing “For the Son” (Luke 19:10).

Lyrics are in the back of this book.

Jesus is God’s Son. He is the King of kings, yet he came to earth as a child. Jesus is God’s special gift to us. Let’s worship God for his great gift.

Sing “God So Loved the World” (John 3:16).

Lyrics are in the back of this book.

When you came to children’s church today, you filled out a form. Lets look at the surveys and find out some of the ways you and your parents are alike and different. The first question asks if you like to eat pizza for breakfast. Stand up if you like pizza for breakfast, and then sit down. (Pause.)

Stand up if your parent also likes pizza for breakfast, and then sit down. (Pause.)

Now stand up if both you and your parent like pizza for breakfast, and then sit down. (Pause.) Now stand up if neither of you likes pizza for breakfast, and then sit down.

Use this format to have kids respond to some other survey questions. Have them show their answers in different ways—by waving at you or by clapping once, for example. As you go through the results, point out that most stereotypes, such as that all kids enjoy watching cartoons or all parents drive a car, are not true. It’s not necessary to read every item from the survey. When you’re finished, collect the surveys and set them aside.

This was a fun way to get you thinking about the ways you and your parents are alike, as well as the ways you’re different.

• Who is Jesus’ Father? Explain.

If kids mention “Joseph,” agree that Joseph was Jesus’ father on earth, but explain that God is his Father in heaven.

God is Jesus’ Father, which makes Jesus God’s Son, of course! God the Father and Jesus have different roles or jobs, just as you and your parents have different ones. God is in heaven. God sent his Son to earth as a little child. Jesus did everything on earth that his Father asked him to do. Even though God the Father and Jesus, his Son, have different jobs, in one very important way they are alike—they are both God. The Bible says that God exalted Jesus above every name in heaven and on earth. He is Lord! And the Lord is good.

Sing “He Is Good” (Nahum 1:7).

Lyrics are in the back of this book.

Ask a volunteer to read Philippians 2:5-11 in an easy-to-understand version, such as the New Living Translation.

These verses show us that even though Jesus is God, he chose to obey his Father in everything. One day every knee will bow before Jesus and every tongue will confess that he is God. Let’s praise our wonderful God.

Sing “To God Be the Glory.”

Lyrics are in the back of this book.

Have you ever heard the expression that someone wears different hats? It means that they have a lot of different jobs to do. Parents usually wear a lot of different hats. Maybe your mom is a businesswoman during the day. When she gets home, she becomes a cook, housekeeper, and laundry woman. When you’re sick or hurt, she becomes a nurse. That’s a lot of different jobs! We could say that Jesus wears a lot of hats, too. Let’s find out about some of them!

Pass out the four hats randomly to four children. Ask the children to put them on and stand in front of the group. Draw kids’ attention to the newsprint with Hebrews 1:1-3 on it.

I’m going to read Hebrews 1:1-3. Listen carefully, and then tell me four jobs that Jesus has. These hats will give you some clues. Read Hebrews 1:1-3 aloud. Then have the child wearing the hard hat step forward. The hard hat is our first clue about something that Jesus does.

• What job is this hat a clue for?

• In what verse do you find that?

Builders wear hard hats. Verse 2 says that through Jesus, God created the universe. Jesus helped to build the whole world—even the planets and all the galaxies.

Have the child wearing the crown step forward.

• What job does the crown represent?

Verse 2 also says that Jesus is the “heir of all things.” In a royal family, the king’s son or daughter is the heir to the throne—the next one to be king or queen. The heir is the one who receives someone else’s riches, property, and possessions. Jesus is our King.

Have the child wearing the hat with the mirror on it step forward.

Did you notice that there’s a mirror on the brim of this hat? When you look in a mirror, you see an exact copy of yourself. Verse 3 tells us that Jesus is the “exact representation” of the Father. That means he is a mirror image of God the Father.

Have the child wearing the grapevine “crown of thorns” step forward.

• What job does this represent?

This one represents the crown of thorns Jesus wore when he died on the cross. Verse 3 says that Jesus purified us from sin. He did that by dying in our place. Collect the hats, and have the children sit down.

Of course, Jesus doesn’t really wear these hats. They’re just a way to point out all the different things he does. He loves us, not because we are good, but because of his mercy. Let’s worship him for all he does for us.

Sing “His Mercy” (Titus 3:5a).

Lyrics are in the back of this book.

Jesus is God’s Son. When he died on the cross for us, he made a way for us to get to heaven. No one gets there except through Jesus.

Sing “I Am the Way” (John 14:6).

Lyrics are in the back of this book.

Let’s praise God for his great love for us.

Sing “How Wide?” (Ephesians 3:18).

Lyrics are in the back of this book.

Dear Jesus, we praise you because you are the Son of the one, true God. We thank you for showing us the Father and for making it possible for us to be with him in heaven forever. Help us know you better today. We ask this in your name, amen.

Using TheoConsider using Theophilus the FaithRetriever puppet today in these ways:

• Have Theo lead the preschoolers from the main worship area to the preschool room.

• Have Theo talk about what his parents look like in “Are You My Mother?”

• See the KidsOwn Worship Kit for a puppet skit written for today’s worship session.

Worship Theme:

Jesus is God’s Son.

Easy Prep for LeadersAre You My Mother?—Cut apart the baby animals and adult animals from the “Animals” poster in the KidsOwn Worship Kit.

God’s Son—Cut 3-inch squares of white and brown construction paper. You’ll need one of each color for each child. You’ll also need tape, a washable marker, scissors, a tub or large bowl of water, and a towel.

Three-in-One Snack—Gather apples, a knife, a cutting board, cream cheese, three mandarin orange slices per child, craft sticks or plastic knives, paper plates, and napkins.

Are You My Mother?Have the children sit in a circle on the floor, and hand each child a picture of a baby animal. If you have more than 10 children, have some children work in pairs.

Let’s hold up our pictures for everyone to see.

• How are all our pictures alike?

• How are all our pictures different?

Help children discover that all the pictures are baby animals but that they’re all different animals. Have children take turns holding up their pictures and naming the animals. Briefly discuss what the parents of each animal might look like. Then spread out

the pictures of the adult animals on the floor in front of you. Have children take turns finding the picture that goes with their baby animals. Allow them to hold both pictures.

• How did you know which animal went with your baby?

These baby animals resemble their parents. That means these babies look like their parents, but they’re smaller. You resemble your parents just as the baby animals resemble the big animals.

Jesus and his Father are also alike. The Bible says that when we get to know Jesus, we’ll know what God is like. That’s because Jesus is God’s Son. Let’s get ready to learn more about Jesus and his Father.

Collect the pictures, and set them aside so the children can take them home.

* God’s Son Today we’re going to make finger puppets to help tell the Bible story. Show me your two pointer fingers.

Explain to children that one of their fingers will be Jesus and the other will be Jesus’ cousin John. Draw smiley faces on the tip of each index finger with a washable marker.

Now, we’re going to dress our puppets. I’m going to give you a piece of white paper to wrap around your finger for Jesus’ robe. The brown paper will be John the Baptist’s robe for your other finger.

Tape the squares on the children’s fingers. Cut them smaller if necessary. Prepare your own fingers as puppets, too.

Place the tub of water on the towel in the center of your circle.

Jesus had a cousin named John the Baptist. John traveled around the countryside telling others about God. When people decided to believe in God, John baptized them. He would take them into the Jordan River and baptize them in the water. It was a way of showing that they were washing away their sins, starting a new life, and believing in God.

Encourage children to copy your actions as you tell the story.

Page 9: ession 6 Jesus Is Baptized - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/FW...Session 6 • KidsOwn Worship 77 Why We Worship for Leaders Jesus came to earth as a human

* Three-in-One Snack We’re learning today that Jesus is God’s Son. The Bible tells us that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are three persons but they make up one God. That sounds confusing! But we can see something like it in this apple.

Show the children an apple. Cut the apple in half, and point out the parts as you continue.

This apple is one apple. But it’s made up of three parts. In the very center is the core. It holds the seeds of the apple. We could say the core is like God the Father. The next part is the part of the apple that we eat. Let’s say that’s like God the Son. And the third part is the skin. The skin protects the fruit inside and keeps it fresh and juicy. We could say the skin is like the Holy Spirit. Three parts; one apple. Three persons; one God. Let’s make our apple into a

special snack now to thank God for being so awesome.

Cut and core the apples, and give each child one or two wedges on a paper plate with a craft stick and a small amount of cream cheese. Have children spread the cream cheese on the apple pieces. Then give each child three mandarin orange slices to place on the cream cheese as a reminder of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Before anyone eats, say together, “Thank you, God, for Jesus, your Son.”

One day, Jesus walked to the Jordan River. “Walk” the Jesus finger puppet along an imaginary path. He met his cousin John there. Hold up your John puppet.

“John, please baptize me,” Jesus said. Have the finger puppets face one another to “talk.”

“But Jesus, you’re God’s Son,” John answered, “You should baptize me.”

But Jesus told John it was the right thing to do. So Jesus and John walked into the river. John baptized Jesus there. Walk both fingers to the tub of water. Quickly dunk your finger puppets in and out of the water. Then slip the paper cloak off your John puppet.

When Jesus walked out of the water, the Holy Spirit came down from heaven like a dove. Use

your other hand to flutter down from above your head to the Jesus finger puppet. A voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, Jesus, and I’m happy with him!”

Allow the children to dunk their puppets in the water and flutter their hand like the Holy Spirit.

• What did God say to Jesus after he was baptized?

• Does your mom or dad ever say that to you?

God the Father loves his Son, Jesus, very much. He is proud of him. God is proud of you, too. This story of what God said about Jesus shows us one of the reasons we worship Jesus. He is God’s Son!

one will be the child. Then practice acting it out. You can act out what you would do in the situation I give you, or you can act out how you think other parents and kids would act. Any way you do it is fine. I’ll give you a few minutes to prepare, then some of you can share your situations with everyone.

Assign each pair a different situation, such as shopping for shoes, finding a $10 bill in the couch, getting lost on a camping trip, or deciding whether the family pet needs a bath. Give kids several minutes to decide what their characters will do and to practice briefly. Circulate among the pairs, and help as needed.

After several minutes, have everyone sit down. Ask several pairs to act out their situations.

• Which situations showed cooperation? Explain. (Answers will depend on what kids do.)

• Which situations showed conflict? Explain. (Answers will depend on what kids do.)

• Why do kids and parents sometimes have conflicts? (They see things differently; they want different things; sometimes parents are busy.)

Because they’re human, parents and children don’t always see eye to eye. Sometimes what’s important to parents is not important to children, and vice versa. Jesus had a parent, too—God the Father. Their relationship is described in Philippians 2:5-11, the passage we read during our worship time. Let’s look at it again to see if their relationship is anything like the ones you acted out in your situations.

Have a volunteer read Philippians 2:5-11 aloud to the group.

• What was Jesus’ attitude toward his Father? (Jesus was like a servant; Jesus obeyed God; he was humble.)

• What was God’s attitude toward Jesus? (God gave Jesus the highest place; God made Jesus Lord of all.)

This passage shows us that, even though Jesus is God, he didn’t demand to be treated like God. Instead he chose to be a servant. He wanted to honor his Father by doing everything God wanted him to do.

• Why was Jesus a good Son? (Jesus obeyed; Jesus was humble.)

• What can we learn from Jesus’ example? (To honor God and our parents; to obey our parents.)

What Jesus chose as important was what his Father thought was important—people! Sometimes kids and parents differ, as we saw in our skits, because sometimes they think different things are important. But that doesn’t happen with Jesus and his Father. They work together. God sent Jesus to earth to die for our sins, and Jesus came willingly. Then, after he had done

everything his Father wanted, God gave the Son the highest honor of all by having everyone in heaven and on earth worship his name. Let’s follow Jesus’ example as the Son of God.

Bible Story PuzzleHave the children form six groups, and give each group a Bible. If possible, have them sit so that all the groups together form a circle and can easily see one another. Stand in the center of the circle of groups with the bags you prepared before worship.

Open your Bibles to Matthew 3. In each of these bags is a symbol of something in today’s Bible story. I’m going to give each group a bag. Look at your symbol together, then read Matthew 3:4-6 and 13-17 about Jesus’ baptism. Decide what part of the story your item represents. In this puzzle, as in other puzzles, some of the items will be tougher to figure out than others. After a few minutes, we’ll put all the pieces together.

Give a bag to each group. Circulate as kids read and discuss, helping them as needed. After several minutes, get everyone’s attention. Have one person from each group hold up the group’s item so that everyone can see it.

• Which of these items represents the first thing that happened in the Bible story? Explain why you think it comes first.

Continue on through the items in the order that they occur in the story (see the list below). Children may come up with different interpretations, so accept any reasonable interpretations.

1. sandal: Jesus, because he walked from Galilee to the Jordan, or John

2. jar of water: the Jordan River (This symbol could also represent an event later in the story.)

3. fake fur: John, who wore camel’s hair clothing

4. fiberfill batting: clouds as they parted

5. feather: the Holy Spirit descending like a dove

6. microphone or megaphone: the voice from heaven or John preaching

The voice from heaven was the voice of God the Father. Matthew 3:17 says, “And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ “ At the time God said this, Jesus hadn’t even done anything yet! He hadn’t started preaching. He hadn’t healed anyone. He hadn’t died on the cross or risen from the dead.

• Why was the Father pleased with Jesus? (Because God knew Jesus would obey him; because God knew Jesus would show God’s love to everyone.)

God loved Jesus, and Jesus loved him. That’s what pleased God! Though he hadn’t done any great deeds yet, Jesus had a great attitude. The passage in Philippians showed us that attitude. Let’s see it in another place.

Page 12: ession 6 Jesus Is Baptized - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/FW...Session 6 • KidsOwn Worship 77 Why We Worship for Leaders Jesus came to earth as a human

85 Session 6 • KidsOwn Worship

Have someone read John 17:20-21 aloud.

Jesus prayed this prayer the night before he died. But all through his life, this was his attitude—obeying God and doing his Father’s will. Dying on the cross was the final test of his obedience.

• How can we please God? (By praying; by listening for God and obeying; by loving God.)

God is pleased with us when we love him! He likes it when we do what he wants, but he knows we can’t be perfect, and he doesn’t expect us to be. That’s why he sent Jesus, his perfect Son, to us. When we believe in Jesus and what he did for us on the cross, God sees Jesus when he looks at us! And that makes us perfect in his sight. That’s why we worship Jesus, God’s Son!

Father, Son, and SpiritSet out the colored cords so children can see them.

As we read the story of Jesus’ baptism, did you notice that all three persons of the Trinity were present? Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit came like a dove, and God the Father spoke from heaven! Let’s make something to remind us that Jesus is God’s Son and that he is also God. Hold up the bracelet you made before the session.

This bracelet will help us understand the Trinity a little better. It’s made up of three separate cords. Together the cords make one bracelet. The Trinity is three persons but one God.

The gold cord represents God the Father, who sits in heaven on the throne. Gold is a symbol of God’s holiness and kingliness. The red cord represents Jesus’ blood when he died on the cross. The blue cord stands for the Holy Spirit, who is sometimes described as the wind or water in the Bible. We’re going to braid these three cords into one bracelet. When you wear the bracelet, remember the perfect relationship of love between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Have kids choose one each of the colored cords, put them together, and tie a knot with one set of ends. Then have kids tape the knotted end to the table or a chair back and braid the cords. Encourage kids to help one another if some children don’t know how to braid or if you do this activity with preschoolers. When everyone has finished, have kids tie the bracelets around each other’s wrists and cut off any extra length.

Let’s Pray!The Offering

We’ve been learning today that Jesus is God’s Son. We know also that he is God because of all the amazing things he did on earth and because he died and rose again.

Pass out index cards and pencils or markers. Ask the children to think of something they’d like to thank Jesus for and write a word or draw a picture on their cards to represent it. Then have a minute of silence, and encourage the children to thank Jesus for whatever is represented on their cards.

Pass the offering bowls, and ask the children to put in their index cards and any other offering they brought.

Thank You, JesusImagine, for a moment, how different life would be if Jesus and his Father didn’t get along. What if Jesus hadn’t obeyed his Father? What if Jesus had said no to coming to earth? What if Jesus had come to earth but then decided to live his life like everybody else and not die for us? What if Jesus gave in to fear and ran away instead of going to the cross?

We have so much to thank Jesus for! Let’s praise him for being God’s Son. Let’s take turns around the room saying sentence prayers of thanksgiving for all that Jesus has done. I’ll start.

Jesus, thank you for being God’s Son and dying for us. Have children take turns saying a sentence prayer.

We Adore YouLet’s close today by singing about God’s love as a prayer. Worship God—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—as you sing.

Sing “God So Loved the World” (John 3:16).

Lyrics are in the back of this book.

Father, thank you for your Son, Jesus. We love him and praise him because he is God. Help us be like him, love you, and do what pleases you. We love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
