The U .S . Constitution ReaderThe U.S. Constitution Reader has a threefold purpose:

■ Present the U.S. Constitution in the context in which it was written. One cannot really understand the U .S . Constitution without understanding the history that led to the framing of the U .S . Constitution . Therefore, the Reader focuses first on two important documents that preceded the U .S . Constitution: the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation .

■ Show how the U.S. Constitution was created, then approved, by the States. The Reader reviews the discussion in the Federalist Papers that centered on the creation of the U .S . Constitution and its approval .

■ Present the history of the U.S. Constitution and the content of the Constitution. This is the main purpose of the Reader—to present this vital history in a way that is readable and understandable .

The Reader includes projects that can be completed as part of U.S. Constitution Day (September 17) observances and at other times throughout the year.

Freedom in America Parts 1 and 2COMING IN NOVEMBER 2015 & FEBRUARY 2016

Freedom in America traces the story of America’s economic and political success through the perspective of the freedoms guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution:

Freedom in America Part 1 traces the sources of the ideas of the Constitution in our English heritage, the colonial experience, and in the Revolutionary generation’s leadership that led to the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Part I concludes with an examination of documents that followed the Constitution. These documents continued to explain, clarify, and defend the Constitution’s singular theme: freedom.

Key documents include:The Magna Carta The Mayflower CompactPennsylvania Charter Declaration of Rights and Freedom The Declaration of Independence Constitution of the United States

Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address

Freedom in America Part 2 examines post-Constitution writing from 1865 through the present that centered on the questions regarding freedoms and rights guaranteed by the Constitution. In some ways, the conflicts and domestic arguments often focus upon answering these questions: Who are the people? Who has the rights guaranteed by the Constitution?

Key documents include:Majority opinion by Justice William O . Douglas in Zorach v . Clauson Majority opinion by Chief Justice William Rehnquist in Wallace v . Jafree“I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King, Jr .

Economic Freedom and Economic GrowthCOMING IN MAY 2016

Economic Freedom and Economic Growth takes an historical approach to narrate how and why the U.S. has enjoyed unparalleled economic prosperity.

This economic history of the U.S. relates the country’s economic growth to the freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. A unique comparative approach describes the success of the American economic engine in relation to the success (or failure) of other countries.

Key documents include:“Of Plymouth Plantation” by William Bradford “The Use of Money” by John WesleyThe Gospel of Wealth by Andrew Carnegie

Other Educational Publications

The Bible and Its InfluenceThe Bible and Its Influence, published in 2005 and revised

and updated in 2011, is the only First-Amendment-safe textbook designed to support academic study of the Bible in America’s public high schools. The textbook is available in both print and digital formats.

Developed over a five-year period with input from 40 leading scholars, religious leaders, and academic practitioners, The Bible and Its Influence supports instruction in English and Social Studies elective courses for high school juniors and seniors. The textbook is an opportunity to share the contents of the Bible in an appropriate way. Used in combination with the Bible, the textbook follows a safe constitutional path for the presentation of biblical content-- the narratives, characters, plots, poetry, letters, events, parables, prophecies, and proverbs in the Bible. The program was designed to address the fact that, without an understanding of the Bible, today’s youth cannot fully understand English literature, art, history, music or culture.

To date, The Bible and Its Influence has been introduced in more than 600 high schools in 43 states across America. More than 100,000 students have benefited from academic Bible instruction based on this textbook. The availability of the program in a digital format has opened the door to the international community. The possibility of overseas expansion is currently being explored.

The Bible and Its Influence program includes a wrap-around Teacher Edition, a complete assessment program, and a Teacher Resource CD that includes the following:

■ Pacing Guide

■ Bibliographies for each unit

■ Projects

■ Writing Activities

■ People and Places of Influence activities for each chapter

Our Partners in Education

The Hebrew Bible CourseIn August 2015, Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, began offering an online three-

semester-credit course for college and high school students on the Hebrew Scriptures, the first half of The Bible and Its Influence. Teachers preparing to teach academic Bible courses can also enroll in Concordia’s graduate-level Education courses which incorporate content from The Bible and Its Influence. Link: cu-portland.edu

Students will explore the Hebrew Scriptures and their influence on culture: the fine arts, the performing arts, and public policy. Although being a sacred text, the Bible has literary and historic merit on its own. Students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Bible’s historical and cultural contexts and its literary features as well as its pervasive impact on global architecture, art, drama, history, literature, and music. The books of the Hebrew Bible are filled with adventure, poetry, songs, narratives, visions, comfort, warnings, and advice applicable to contemporary life.

Flourishing Through BusinessFlourishing Through Business is a three-semester-credit course being offered both online and

on-campus through the Chesapeake Energy School of Business at Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Because of its quality content and effective student outcomes, this is now a required course for all graduates of the School.

Florida State University’s Entrepreneurship Program and other universities both in America and abroad plan to start the Flourishing Through Business course soon.

The course answers these questions as well as many more:

■ Why has America succeeded economically while at the same time the Soviet Union and other communist countries impoverished their people and forced millions of their citizens to starve to death?

■ Why did per capita income begin to expand rapidly in 1820?

■ How do corruption and regulation hurt economic growth?

Universities interested in the course should contact Chuck Stetson, CEO of Essentials in Education, who created and teaches this course: Essentials in Education, 115 East 62nd St., NY, NY 10065. Email: [email protected]

The National Constitutional Literacy Campaign Now in Full Swing

Essentials in Education is a founding partner of the National Constitutional Literacy Campaign, along with seventeen other nationally recognized institutions.

The campaign was launched on September 10, 2015, with an event at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The launch coincided with Constitution Day on September 17, 2015. See the campaign web link at constitutiondays.org. The campaign motto is “Everyday is Constitution Day.”

The National Constitutional Literacy Campaign is designed to encourage all Americans to learn more about the Constitution and to address the troubling decline in constitutional and civics literacy. A study by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni of core curricula at 1,098 four-year colleges and universities revealed that only 18% of schools require American history to graduate, 13% require a foreign language, and 3% economics. The National Constitutional Literacy Campaign is addressed to citizens along the learning spectrum, not just K-12 students. The goals of the National Constitutional Literacy Campaign are to:

1. Increase the visibility of all organizations devoted to constitutional literacy by launching a web site where educators, students and citizens of all ages can find information about organizations providing pedagogical materials and other resources related to the United States Constitution and our nation’s history .

2. Engage with the media to ensure that Constitution Day (September 17), Bill of Rights Day (December 15), and Freedom Day (April 13) are highlighted in a meaningful and substantive way . Similarly, emphasize Celebrate Freedom Week, which is celebrated at different times throughout the country .

3. Reinvigorate philanthropic support for constitutional literacy programs .

In 2004, Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia led the passage of legislation designating September 17th of each year as Constitution Day and requiring public schools and governmental offices to provide educational programs to promote a better understanding of the Constitution.
