To meet the DfE’s requirements for Level 3 vocational qualifications, our team of Development Specialists have researched and consulted with experts from across the sector; this includes:

• Teachers,tutorsandpractitioners

• Universitylecturers

• Nationalagenciesinsportsuchas:SportsCoachUK,SportsLeadersUK, Youth Sports Trust, English Federation of Disability Sport, Chartered Institute of Management, Sport and Physical Activity, and Association for Physical Education

• NationalGoverningBodies(NGBs)ofSport

• Industrysectorspecialists

• Employers.

This confirmed our belief that we had the potential to develop a Level 3 vocational qualification in Sport and Physical Activity that would leave our competitors in the starting blocks.

As a result, we’ve designed refreshing and exciting content that’s up to date, engaging, fit for purpose and suitable for the needs of your students in 2016 and beyond. We’ve made sure that your students will gain the right combination of knowledge, understanding and skills required for the 21st century.

The two Certificates are the smaller sizes of qualification, 180 GLH and 360 GLH, and are the same size as half and one A Level. This means as part of their study programme, your students can take a number of Cambridge Technical subjects, or mix their Cambridge Technical with complementary A Levels.

We worked with universities to design the content and assessment of these qualifications – making sure that your students are prepared and have the skills to progress to degree level.

We’re also aware the new A Level syllabus and exam requirements may not suit your students. Plus, the decoupling of the AS from the A Level may not provide the flexibility you need in order to offer a comprehensive study programme. Therefore, the Cambridge Technicals provide the solution you need to give students optionality within their study programme, at the same time as making sure they have a recognised qualification designed to take them to university.

As well as giving flexibility within your students’ study programme, we wanted to offer a 180 GLH qualification so your students can move down to the smaller size if they need to. Some students, for whatever reason, may leave their studies early; we don’t want them to leave with nothing. We also didn’t want the 180 GLH to be 100% externally assessed.

The Level 3 Cambridge Technical Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity is made up of two units:

Unit 1 Body Systems and the Effects of Physical Activity is assessed by a 90 minute written exam made up of multiple, short or long answer questions.

Unit 2 Sports Coaching and Leadership is internally assessed through a centre-set assignment. Plus, we’ve developed external partnerships to enhance this unit, support your delivery, and make sure your students gain the right knowledge and skills required for coaching and leadership; see the Coaching, Leadership and Physical Education pathway for more details.

Our competitors don’t provide you with this size of qualification.

The Diplomas are the three larger sizes of qualification, 540 GLH, 720 GLH and 1080 GLH, and are the same size as one and a half, two and three A Levels. This means that as part of their study programme, your students can study a number of Cambridge Technical subjects, mix their Cambridge Technical with complementary A Levels or GCSE re-sits, or study a single Level 3 Extended Diploma vocational qualification.

We’ve worked with universities, industry experts and employers to design the content and assessment of these qualifications – making sure that your students are prepared and have the skills to progress to university, an apprenticeship or employment.

The Diplomas have four vocational pathways within them; at least one pathway must be achieved. Each pathway focuses on industry sectors and job roles that your students will actually be able to do having completed a Cambridge Technical. We’ve worked in partnership with industry to make sure your students can progress directly into the sector in job roles that are appropriate for their age and experience.

Our Level 3 Cambridge Technical Foundation Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity provides your students with a choice of three different pathways that are related to industry sectors:

Every qualification in the Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Sport and Physical ActivitysuiteattractsUCASpoints.Wehaveacloseworkingrelationshipwith UCAStomakesureuniversityadmissionsstaffareawareofCambridgeTechnicals. However… it’s worth remembering:

Level 3 qualifications designed for progression to university will normally have UCASpointsattachedtothem.Thisisn’tjustCambridgeTechnicals, butvocationalqualifications from other exam boards such as Pearson’s BTEC, AQA’s Technical Level, and City & Guilds’ TechBac; and A Levels too.

Any awarding organisation telling you their qualifications are recognised as a clearroutetouniversityispullingthewooloveryoureyes.AttractingUCASpointsdoesn’t mean every university will accept the qualification; there are a lot of variables to consider. It’s not as simple as this university does and this one doesn’t.

1. The subject – it’ll depend on the Level 3 subject and the combination of other Level3subjectstakenwithit(amixofvocationalandALevelsubjects,oramix ofsmallervocationalsubjects).

2. The degree – what degree course your student wants to do. Are the Level 3 subjects taken what the university want for that degree course? Students must check what subjects and qualification types universities require.

3. Demand – some degree courses are really popular. Degrees such as physiotherapy often take small cohorts and become massively oversubscribed – allowing the university to be very selective when choosing applicants.

4.Universitystatus–someuniversitiesdon’tlikelargevocationalqualifications and would prefer a mix of vocational and A Level subjects. Students who may have their eye on a certain university need to be mindful of this and choose their Level 3 qualifications accordingly.

We initially developed four sizes of Cambridge Technicals in Sport and Physical Activity. There are a few reasons for this:

1. Some universities and employers told us they don’t like 1080 GLH qualifications (threeALevelsized).Theybelievethesearetoobroadanddon’tcontainenough depth; plus it could limit your students’ progression options.

So we initially concentrated our efforts on developing four high-quality qualifications that would give your students the knowledge, understanding and skills for progression. This means that we haven’t had to include ‘filler’ units which willbeofnorealbenefittostudents.Unitssuchas:

• SportsMassagewhere, inreality, studentswantingtomoveintothisareaneeda separate, specific qualification at Level 3.

• WorkExperience, whichwebelieveisamethodofdeliveringtheskills, knowledge and understanding, not something to be assessed.

• DevelopmentofPEsessions,wherestudentslookatthehistoryofPhysical EducationandtheNationalCurriculumdatingbackto1864(butnomentionof the2014NationalCurriculum).Thisisn’tanALeveloraPGCE.

2. Some universities and employers also told us students would be better equippedwithamixofqualifications(eithervocationalorgeneral).Forexample, a student wishing to work in sports development or leisure management could enhance their options if they studied sport alongside business; someone aspiring to work in fitness or as a personal trainer could consider sport, alongside business and science; anyone thinking about sports journalism as a career could consider sport, alongside media, English and IT.

We’ve made sure the Cambridge Technicals in Sport and Physical Activity complement the rest of the Cambridge Technical subjects and A Levels, so you can provide your students with a high-quality study programme that meets their progression needs.

3. Teachers, tutors and practitioners told us they didn’t want exams. However, this is a DfE requirement for Level 3 vocational qualifications and all awarding organisations have to include a percentage of external assessment i.e. an exam.

We decided that initially not developing a 1080 GLH qualification would protect the percentage of external assessment for the smaller size qualifications – we didn’t want these qualifications to have a massive amount of external assessment and disadvantage your students.

WHY DID WE INITIALLY DEVELOP FOUR SIZES OF QUALIFICATION?

Page 17: Essential sports guide (PDF, 3MB)

SPORT 17

We’ve carefully selected the units we’ll externally assess to make sure we continue to allow practical assessment to take place where it’s most appropriate. For example – Sports Coaching and Leadership, and Improving Fitness for Sport and Physical Activity are units we assess through practical assessment and demonstration – unlike our competitors who have chosen to externally assess, theoretically in some instances.

We’ve also kept the duration of our external assessment to a minimum. Your students will have to undertake no more than 4 hours of exams; unlike BTEC, where students could be looking at upwards of 20 hours spent on external assessment, plus this being managed under controlled conditions.

4. We’ve maintained the flexibility of our internal assessment, letting you decide when your students are ready to be assessed and how to assess them. We’ll support you in this with Model Assignments, Project Approaches and links to other organisations to support meaningful employer engagement. But ultimately, you know your students the best, so you know how and when they should be assessed. City and Guilds will tell you how and when to assess your students, setting fixed assignments and exams at the end of the two-year programme, leavinglittleroomforresitopportunities(iftheyarerequired)and limited opportunity for engaging and personalised assessment.

5. We wanted to offer a 180 GLH qualification so your students can move down to the smaller size if they need to. Some students, for whatever reason, may leave their studies early; we don’t want them to leave with nothing. We also didn’t want the 180 GLH to be 100% externally assessed.

Having designed what we believe to be a fantastic Level 3 sports qualification that meets the demands of a 16-19 study programme, we turned our attention to the development of the Extended Diploma.

We feel we have everything right in the four smaller sizes; and that using our knowledge and experience, consulting with a range of sector experts, and listening to teaching practitioners, we would provide your students with a 1080 GLH qualification that really would be in a different league.

We’ve made sure our units and pathways in the Cambridge Technicals in Sport and Physical Activity meet the needs and requirements of a range of industry sectors. We’ve spoken to the leading national agencies in sport to make sure our content is fit for purpose, and meets the needs of industry and employers. The even better news is that the vast majority of these agencies are working in partnership with us to make sure your students really do get the best out of their Cambridge Technical and are prepared for the future.

We researched the SOC codes for sport and recreation to make sure our qualifications align with industry and employment sectors.

We analysed job roles available to 18 to 19-year-olds and consulted employers to make sure our qualifications provide your students with the correct knowledge and skills to progress straight into appropriate job roles for their age and ability.

We consulted universities to establish the degree subjects taken after completing a Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity. Our optional units and pathways provide a strong foundation for your students’ progression, whether that is university, an apprenticeship or employment.

Why did we develop four pathways?
