Essential Oil Training
What are Essential Oils?
Plants contain complex and powerful substances known as essential oils.
These are aromatic liquids derived from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, herbs, and seeds.
These distinctive components defend plants from insects, harsh environmental conditions, and
disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings.
Referred to as the essence of the plant, pure essential oils not only protect the plant, but also
determine its aroma. Essential Oils are not really “oils”. They are the highly concentrated liquid that
comes from the plant. For example, rose essential oil has a beautiful, strong floral and sweet
fragrance that is intoxicating and highly romantic.
It takes thousands of flower petals to create the drops that are in a single bottle of therapeutic grade
rose oil, and adding a single drop of peppermint oil to a glass of water has approximately the same
concentration as 20 bags of peppermint tea.
Larissa Bright Essential OilsMany oils, touted as essential oils, are derived with harsh chemicals, diluted, or copied
and produced in a lab. Cheap copies bring cheap results and have the potential to be
toxic. Therefore, it is imperative to take great care in choosing high-quality essential
oils.
We offer pure, unadulterated essential oils, oil blends, and oil-enhanced products. Our
oils meet high industry standards. We are dedicated to producing essential oils from
the highest-quality plants.
Healthy plants and proper distillation produce superior essential oils with powerful
benefits. Every oil is put through a series of rigorous tests before it is deemed qualified
to bear the Larissa Bright label.
The essential oils are then bottled in dark, thick, glass containers to protect their
integrity. Under the lid is a fixed orifice that helps to measure dosages and to ensure
safety, particularly for young children.
HISTORY OF ESSENTIAL OILS
Since ancient times, and as near as we can tell from the beginning of recorded history, the
plant kingdom has provided rare and powerful extracts and essences that have long been
prized for their beauty enhancing, medicinal, aromatic and therapeutic value.
Many plants have been the basis for herbal and botanical medicines and remedies for
thousands of years, and are the root of today’s pharmaceuticals.
A Basic History of Essential Oils Around the World
Egypt, early 2000 BC
As early as 2000 BC, the highly evolved Egyptians were using essential oils for medicinal
benefits, beauty care, spiritual enhancement, and in literally all aspects of their daily life.
Expensive aromatics and perfumes were worn in Egypt by the ruling families and the
priests. There are numerous hieroglyphics depicting men and women wearing perfumed
wax cones that would provide a pleasant scent and moisturize the skin.
Egyptian temple priests - the doctors of the day, employed a variety of aromatic balms,
resins and powders in many different ways for both religious and medicinal purposes.
Many pictorials on temple walls show Egyptian royalty using essential oils. Different
aromatic oils were dedicated to different deities—such as styrax to Saturn, costus to
Mars, myrrh to the moon and frankincense to the sun.
GreeceHippocrates, considered the father of modern medicine, is reported to have
advised that “The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented
massage every day.” He reportedly believed strongly in the medicinal benefit of fumigation with
aromatics and used fumigation in the city of Athens to combat the plague.
A contemporary of Hippocrates, Theophrastus wrote the first known treatise on scent, titled
‘Concerning Odours.’ He inventoried all the Greek and imported aromatic medicines and wrote
of ways they could be used. Commenting on the therapeutic value of natural perfumes, he said:
“It is to be expected the perfumes should have medicinal properties in view of the virtues of
their spices. The effect of plasters and of what some may call poultices prove these virtues,
since they disperse tumors and abscesses and produce a distinct effect on the body and its
interior parts.”
Implicit in this observation is one of the fundamental principles of therapeutic aromatherapy -
that essential oils applied externally affect the internal organs and tissue.
IndiaIn India, essential oils have been a core element of the Ayurvedic health care system for centuries. Nobody can be sure exactly how old Ayurvedic medicine is, but it has been practiced for at least 4000 years and is still widely practiced in India today.
One of its principal aspects is aromatic massage, where essential oils—especially sandalwood—are used. Ayurvedic literature from 2000 BC records Indian doctors administering oils of cinnamon, ginger, myrrh, coriander, spikenard and sandalwood to their patients.
The Vedas, the most sacred book of India mentions over 700 different herbs and aromatics and codify the uses of perfumes and aromatics for religious and therapeutic purpose.
Basil is a sacred plant in India, believed to open the heart and mind, bestowing the energy of love and devotion. Sacred to Vishnu and Krishna, it strengthens faith, compassion and clarity.
Europe
During the Middle Ages, the use of aromatics was denounced by
the Catholic Church, as decadent. This reduced the use of aromatics
for therapy. But by the 1600's, books about essential oils grew and became widespread.
By the 1800’s most of the pharmacopoeia of England, Germany and France were
referencing and prescribing essential oils for a variety of illnesses.
At the same time, large flower-growing districts in the south of France were supplying raw
materials for French perfumers. Tuberculosis was common, and workers processing flowers
and herbs in these districts generally remained disease free, including tuberculosis.
Believing that essential oils in the plants were protecting the workers, the first recorded
lab test of the anti-bacterial properties of essential oils was performed in 1887.
Rene-Maurice Gattefosse
In 1910 Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French cosmetic chemist, had an accident, severely
burning his hands and arms in a lab explosion. He extinguished the flames, but as he
described it, “both my hands were covered with rapidly developing gas gangrene.”
He submerged his burns in a large container of lavender oil and reported that “just one
rinse with lavender essence stopped the gasification of the tissue. This treatment was
followed by profuse sweating and healing which began the next day.”
Gattefosse continued to investigate the medical use of essential oils and treated soldiers
in military hospitals during World War I with oils. He coined the term “aromatherapie” -
the treatment
Jean Valnet
Jean Valnet, a Parisian medical doctor and army surgeon, who was also a colleague
of Gattefosse’s, began to use essential oils —with great success—as antiseptics
treating war wounds during the Indochina war from 1948-1959. After the war, he
continued using essential oils in his practice, publishing in 1964 the comprehensive
text Aromatherapie, earning him global recognition.
In the 1980's French MD, Daniel Pénoël along with French biochemist Pierre
Franchomme, investigated and catalogued the medical properties of over 270
essential oils, recommending uses for a clinical environment.
The book, published in French in 1990, L’aromatherapie exactement, quickly became
the primary resource for dozens of secondary authors writing of the medical benefits
of essential oils.
Today, in France, Germany and England,
it is common for doctors to prescribe essential
oils, distributed through pharmacies.
Essential oils carry the signature and energetic imprint of the plant
to the cells of the person using it.
Concentrated Benefits - Essential oils are the energetic substance extracted from a
single botanical source;
The oil is up to 70x more concentrated than what is found in raw plant form.
Regenerative - The properties of essential oils promote cellular regeneration,
assisting the body in regenerating previously damaged cells. The regenerative
aspects assist the body in doing what it does best, balancing and healing. This
aspect of essential oil usage is one of the reasons why they are so perfect for use in
anti-aging skin care, and the like.

RULES TO REMEMBER ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS
• Always store your essential oils in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat and light. Preferably under 25'C. Always keep the lids done up tightly as the oils are volatile and will evaporate.
• Essential oils should always be kept in dark, glass bottles.
• Keep out of children’s reach.
• Do not apply the 100% pure essential oil directly onto the skin, take or use internally, unless advised by a qualified practitioner.
• NEVER exceed the recommended dosage.
• Do not use the same oil all the time. For maximum benefit, use a blend of oils or alternate the essentials oils from week to week.
• When using essential oils with children or with sensitive skins, use less than the recommended adult strength in baths or for massage purposes. Use only a 1% dilution, i.e. 2 drops to every 10ml of carrier oil.
• Be very wary of essential oils when pregnant or on prescribed medication. Seek advice from your GP before the use of essential oils.
AROMATHERAPY PRACTICAL 1. CREATE YOUR OWN MASSAGE OIL BLENDYou will need:
- Amber Jar 45ml and White tamper evident cap
- Larissa Bright Pure Essential Oils
- Larissa Bright Base Body Oil
Method: Fill your amber jar half way ( approx. 10mls) with base body oil
Choose your essential oils depending on the result you wish to achieve. For example if you are looking
to create a relaxing blend Lavender and Bergamot may be a nice blend. Note: Never blend more than
3 essential oils at a time
Mix 7 drops in total into your amber bottle. Feel free to experiment and create a signature blend just
for you !
For example: 2 drops lavender, 2 drops bergamot and 1 drop Ylang Ylang
Secure your tamper evident cap. Congratulations! You have just blended your very own signature
massage oil. ENJOY!
2. DRAWER SCENT
You will need:
Larissa Bright Pure Essential Oils
Cotton Pad
Resealable plastic bag
Method:
On a cotton pad blend 6 drops of your favourite essential oils. This blend is perfect for your clothes drawer, to hang in your wardrobe ....or ( depending on the blend used) to scare away nasty mites!
Store your blend in the plastic sealable bag provided and take home. When you arrive home transfer into a satin tote bag, so the scent is diffused, and place in your cupboard or drawer.
