Preface

I am delighted to be able to introduce you to essence 2017, with its new format and significantly more content. The number of member companies, which has now risen to over a hundred, has resulted in more content. This growth is also a testimonial to our new strategic positioning. The universities, research institutes and companies we present here can look back on a very successful past year and they are all now very well established, both nationally and inter-nationally.

Styria is an innovation frontrunner among Europe’s 276 regions. This powerful innovation force is due to Styrian businesses and their dedication to crossing boundaries. Not simply geographic boundaries, but also the bounda-ries of knowledge, ideas and the scope of action. Styrian businesses are leading the way in the HealthTech, creating thousands of jobs and offering products and services that enjoy global success. This is why HealthTech is a key area of the Economic Strat-egy Styria 2025 and why we will continue to help the indus-try boost its growth. Human.technology.styria. contributes

In addition to including short profiles of the member com-panies, we have also examined the main areas of success of the region as a whole in the Pharma, BioTech and Med-Tech fields for the first time. This will provide our readers with a clear and analytical overview of industries that make cooperating with our region so very worthwhile. Enjoy browsing the current issue of essence. Do not hesitate to contact me or one of the member companies listed, should you have any questions or are interested in a cooperation.

A solid foundation: Styria in facts and figures

Styria is one of the most forward-thinking regions in Europe – its 4.87 per cent research and development rate makes it one of the top leaders in innovation. It is thanks

to the fact that there is close cooperation between business and science, e.g. at universities and competence centers, that the region has become such a success. HealthTech

is one of the fastest-growing and most forward-thinking fields in Styria.

The basis for the region’s international visibility are the designated areas of strength that result from the close coop-eration between innovative enterprises and Styria’s universi-ties and research centers. For years to come, these areas of strength will be expanded by companies that have not yet been active in the field of HealthTech. “An outstanding re-search landscape, combined with competitive technologies and the productive capacity of the enterprises in the region, are the cornerstones of any international perspective”, as CEO Dr. Johann Harer explains. “We want to continue to develop existing strengths in a targeted way, thus increas-ing international visibility. The strength of our region is not necessarily excellent individual products and services, but rather the very broad portfolio on offers that ranges across the entire value chain”, Harer adds.

Area of strength: MedTech

This area has a striking record of success in sensor, chip and PCB technologies, software/ICT, production and process technologies, including additive manufacturing. An-other area of excellence is materials expertise, ranging from plastics, metallurgy and biomaterial all the way to state-of-the-art surface finishing technologies.

Area of strength: Pharma & BioTech

In this area, the region is one of the frontrunners with regard to process development, optimization and simula-tion, engineering, equipment and plant engineering, auto-mation and industrial biotechnology as well as in the field

An international strategy based on regional strengths

The new strategy of human.technology.styria. defines two essential areas of strength and vision for the future:

MedTech and Pharma & BioTech.

of biomarker research for therapeutics. (For details on the areas of strengths, see the infographic on pages 6 and 7.)

Unique network of strengths

According to Cluster Manger Johann Harer, “The Styr-ian suppliers and plant manufacturers active in the MedTech and also in the Pharma and BioTech industries are among the most innovative enterprises worldwide. The same is true for the non-university research institutions. Combined, they form a unique network of strengths.” Based on this concept, Harer’s vision of the cluster for the coming years: “human.technology.styria. – the cluster for the South of Austria, is the internationally accepted competence hub in numerous areas of HealthTech.” ■

AHA stands for “Active and Healthy Ageing”. To date, Styria is the first and only Austrian Reference Site within the 74 regions in the “European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on Active and Healthy Ageing (AHA)”. “An ageing society brings enormous challenges – but I also see opportunities opening up for added value and jobs. We are well prepared to meet the challenges of demographic change with the products and technologies developed by companies work-ing closely with universities, universities of applied sciences and non-university research institutions”, Styrian Minister of Economy Dr. Christian Buchmann explains: “Being named an European Reference Site proves that our companies and

research institutions also play a leading role in Europe in the vitally important issue of healthy ageing”.

Cluster as an innovation hub

Dr. Johann Harer, CEO of human.technology.styria., describes the activities of the “AHA Reference Site”: “To-gether with our regional partners, we want to develop new ideas for ways of dealing actively with the topic of age-ing, developing new products and services for future us-ers as well as making more efficient use of existing fund-ing on a macroeconomic level.” Partners in the “European

AHA Reference Site” coordinated by human.technology.styria. include the University of Graz, the Medical Univer-sity of Graz, FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences, competence centers CBmed and Know-Center, JOANNE-UM RESEARCH, the Styrian Chamber of Commerce, the Styrian Hospital Limited Liability Company, the Geriatric Health Centers of the City of Graz as well as the companies exthex, Joysys and SPAR.

Innovative companies

The activities and innovations of Styrian companies and research institutions are the reason why Styria is the only Austrian reference site among the 74 in Europe. Neu-roth, a company founded in 1907, has been developing innovative hearing aid solutions for many years and is now one of the leading European providers of hearing aids and hearing protectors. Joysys, a MedTech start-up and spin-off of the Human Research Institute, is developing technologies for measuring the activities of the vegetative nervous system to provide information about the state of an individual’s health and fitness. Styrian software com-pany exthex developed the “flexible everyday assistant for older people”. Large chains and producers of dietary supplements are also affected by the changes in an “age-ing society” to which they need to respond, for example, through “functional food” or in the further development of “social shopping” concepts.

CEO Johann Harer is looking to the future with optimism. “Current gadgets such as fitness watches will tomorrow be used to monitor older or chronically ill citizens to ensure greater safety, enable them to live at home for longer and making it possible to provide better care. Particularly the microelectronics industry in our region is predestined to contribute to the development of products that will be sold in millions around the world. Demographic

change offers excellent opportunities to attract internation-al attention with focused niche items such as innovative, specialized products and services, also in the commercial sector, as well as in terms of software solutions.” As pro-ject manager of the “European AHA Reference Site Styria”, human.technology.styria. primarily aims to “build bridges between research and development, including the field of Active and Healthy Ageing, create synergies and make them available to the Styrian economy.” ■

Innovation pioneer and market leader in “Consumer Health”: hearing aid acoustics company Neuroth.

ChronoCord by Joysys measures heart rate flexibility and analyses an individual’s fitness and health.

In December 2016, Günther Öttinger, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, and Markku Markkula, President of the European Committee of the Regions, in Brussels named Styria “European AHA Reference Site”, presenting the accolade to Dr. Christian Buchmann (l.) and CEO Dr. Johann Harer..
