The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra's 2011-12 Season of performances.
Citation preview
Welcome home. You’re going to see and hear those words a lot this year. This is our 60th season, and we aren’t just celebrating, we’re extending an invitation. We’re saying “Welcome home!” to many of our guest artists, either because they have called Edmonton home, or because their past performances have made them honourary members of the ESO family. You’ve told us how special they are to our history, to the musical memories we’ve made with you, and so they’re joining our party!
The ESO is Edmonton’s orchestra. We’ve grown with the city – updating, adapting, blossoming, and maturing. And like you, we’ve gone through hard times and boom times. Edmonton has nurtured and cherished the ESO among its arts and cultural organizations for three generations, and that means a lot to us. Your continued support is a vote of confi dence, and a responsibility we strive to fulfi ll every day.
We’re enormously proud of our achievements, and we eagerly look forward to those just over the horizon. Whether you’re joining us for the fi rst time, or the sixtieth, whether you’re here for the Masters or the Pops, this brochure outlines all the great music you’ll hear this season.
Settle in, have a look, and be prepared to be moved in a way that only music can.

ESO EducationAdopt-a-PlayerStudents in Grades 4-6 have the unique opportunity to create and perform their own musical work when they “adopt” an ESO musician. After working with their partnered musician for several months during the school year, these students present their composition for friends and family at the world-renowned Winspear Centre.
Young Composers Project The ESO invites high school students passionate about composing to apply for the rare opportunity to receive compositional mentorship. Working with former ESO Composer-in-Residence and one of Canada’s most commissioned and performed composers, Allan Gilliland, one student will experience the thrill of having their original composition premiered by the ESO at Symphony Under the Sky 2011, and heard by more than 2,000 Edmontonians.
Musicians in the MakingReady to reveal your talent and gain that all-important experience of performing before live audiences? We’re looking for student soloists and small ensembles to perform half-hour showcases in the Winspear Centre lobby prior to select ESO performances. All participants are invited to attend an ESO concert, courtesy of our friends at TELUS.
Thank you to our partner in music and education for its support of this signature program:
Education ConcertsEvery season, the ESO presents weekday education concerts for nearly 30,000 children between Kindergarten – Grade 6 in Edmonton and surrounding areas. These educational programs, aligned with Alberta Provincial Education Standards, offer unique, varied, and interactive learning opportunities about music for students of all ages. Teachers receive study guides in advance to prepare their classes and stimulate discussion about orchestra instruments, composers, rhythm patterns, and more!
Upbeat! We want all schools to experience the ESO. That’s why we created Upbeat! — a grant program that helps elementary and junior high schools with modest budgets attend the ESO’s Education Concerts and open dress rehearsals. With support from a generous, anonymous donor, we may be able to provide you with complimentary tickets.
For more information on these programs, visit DiscoverESO.com, or contact Melissa Di Natale, Education & Community Relations Coordinator, at (780) 401-2531 or [email protected].

Broderyck OlsonLongest serving current ESO musicianBroderyck (Broddy) Olson is the longest-serving current member of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, having joined in 1961. His first teacher was his father, Ray LeRoy Olson of the family-operated Olson Music School, who was one of the founding members of the ESO in 1952. Other teachers included Edgar Williams at Alberta College, Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, Thomas Rolston and Lawrence Fisher at the University of Alberta (where Mr. Olson attained his Bachelor and Master’s degrees). During the summers of 1970-75, Broddy Olson studied with Tadeusz Wronski at the Indiana School of Music. He was appointed Assistant Concertmaster of the ESO in 1966.
Mr. Olson has taught hundreds of violin students over the years, many of whom have gone on to professional careers (such as the ESO’s own Robert Hryciw). Broddy Olson started teaching at a young age at the Olson Music School, and continued later at the Banff School of Fine Arts, the University of Alberta, and Alberta College. Presently, Mr. Olson teaches out of his home in southwest Edmonton. He was in the ESO for its legendary performance and recording in 1971 with Procol Harum, and was in the ESO for all 48 concerts of the ITV (now Global) In Concert series.
Broddy Olson is interested in all sports, and cheers loudly for our professional teams in Edmonton, but participates primarily as a golfer, being a member of the Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Since 1967, he has been married to “the greatest gal in the world,” Patty, who smiles and allows him his many indulgences.
