What is a Professional Engineer?

• A Professional Engineer (P.E.) is a person who is licensed to practice engineering in a particular state or US territory after meeting all requirements of the law.

• To practice in multiple states or territories, the P.E. must be licensed in each state in which he/she wishes to practice.

• Some states have reciprocal licenses, meaning if you are a registered engineer in one state, that by providing the necessary documentation, you will meet the new jurisdiction’s requirements.

Professional Engineer

• What makes a Professional Engineer different from an engineer?

• Only a licensed engineer may prepare, sign, seal, and submit engineering plans and drawings to a public authority for approval, or seal engineering work for public and private clients.

• PEs shoulder the responsibility for not only their work, but also for the lives affected by that work and must hold themselves to high ethical standards of practice.

Advantages of PE Licensure• Ensures a level of technical competence above and beyond an engineering degree.• The PE designation helps you stand out among your peers.• PE’s typically earn more than non PE’s.

• PE’s may be afforded more opportunities for advancement within private corporations or local and state government.

• PE’s may testify in court as an expert witness.• PE’s may market consulting or engineering services to the public.• Having a PE gives you flexibility if your career is in transition, or you are planning to retire

from your current job, because you can work for yourself or become a partner in a firm.• You can become incorporated and obtain professional liability insurance.

Overview

• All states and jurisdictions have “registration laws” governing the Practice of Engineering.

• In Michigan, the governing body is LARA – the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

• To become licensed, engineers must complete a four-year engineering degree from an ABET college, work for at least four years, pass two intensive competency exams and earn a license from their state’s licensure board.

• Then, to retain their licenses, PEs must continually maintain and improve their skills throughout their careers with continuing ed. 30 hours every two years.

A Degree from Outside the U.S.

Every U.S. state and foreign entity that offers NCEES exams has unique requirements that examinees must meet before they are allowed to sit for their exams. To begin the registration process, select the state and foreign entity you plan to register with, and read about their application process.
