School bus hit by anti-tank missile

Two civilians were injured, one critically and another

moderately,whenananti-tankmissilewasfiredataschool

busat theSa'ad junction in southern Israel onThursday

(Apr.7).Immediatelyfollowingtheattack,thewoundedwere

transportedbyhelicoptertoahospitalforfurthertreatment.

Accordingtoemergencyservices,authoritieswerenotified

oftheeventatapproximately15:05andambulanceswere

senttothescene.

The Home Front Command instructed residents in

communitiessurroundingtheGazaStriptoenterprotected

areasasa precautionagainst possible rocket fire.Around the sametimeas the attack on thebus,

terroristsfired16mortarshellsfromtheGazaStripwhichlandedinthewesternNegevregion.

IsraeliPresidentShimonPeres, said inresponseto theattacks that,"thisis another incidentwhich

provestheGazaStriphasturnedintoaterroristzone.NocountrywouldgiveupthesafetyofitscitizensandIsraelstandsfirmonitsrighttodefenditself.Hundredsofthousandsofmothersandchildrenin

southernIsraelcannotsleepatnightasaresultofrocketfirefromtheGazaStrip."

Followingtheattack,DefenseMinisterEhudBarakwasquotedsayingthathe"toldtheIDFtoimplement

allmeansnecessaryinordertorespondtothebusattackattheSa'adjunction."Barakaddedthathe

heldHamasresponsibleforanyattackoriginatingintheGazaStrip.

DuringthecourseofWednesdaynight(Apr.6),theIAFtargetedthreesmugglingtunnelsinthesouthern

GazaStripandaterrortunnelinthenorthernGazaStrip.Directhitswereconfirmed.

IDF targets 15 terror sites, 11 terror cells in the Gaza Strip

Inresponsetothemissileattackonschoolbusnear

KibbutzSa'adinsouthernIsraelonThursdayaswellas

continuedrocketandmortarfire,IDFforcescarriedout

anumberofstrikesintheGazaStripovertheweekend.

The IDF targeted eleven squads of terrorists in the

northernandsouthernGazaStrip,immediatelyfollowing

theirfiringofrocketsandmortarsattheIsraelihome

front.IAFaircraft targetedfifteen terror activitysites in the

GazaStrip,includingterrorinfrastructuresites,Hamas

outposts,smugglingtunnelsandweaponsmanufacturingandstoragefacilities.Directhitswereconfirmed.

Additionally,duringjointIDF-ISAactivities,IAFaircrafttargetedHamascommandersandoperatives,

includingaseniorHamasoperativeinthesouthernGazaStrip,TayserAbuSnima.Snimawasdirectly

andphysicallyinvolvedinthekidnappingofIsraelisoldierGiladShalit.Inaddition,heheldseveralmajor

rolesinthemilitarywingofHamasandwasinvolvedinasignificantnumberofterroristattacksagainst

IsraeliciviliansandIDFsoldiers.Mostrecently,hewasinchargeofexecutingaterrorattackfromSinai,

firingrocketsatthecityofEilat.

TheKeremShalomcrossingisthemainentrypoint

forgoodsenteringtheGazaStrip.Ithasbeenclosed,

ontheorderofDefenseMinisterEhudBarak,sinceananti-tankmissileattackcarriedoutbyPalestinian

terroristsonaschoolbuslastThursday(Apr.7)atthe

Sa'adjunctionwoundedtwoIsraelicivilians.

Despitetheclosure,theGazaCoordinationandLiaisonAdministrationnotesthattherearestilllarge

suppliesoffoodandmedicalsuppliesinGazaandthatnoshortagesareexpectedinthecomingdays.

TheCoordinatorofGovernmentActivitiesintheTerritories(COGAT)reportsthatawoundedPalestinian

wastransferredonSunday(Apr.10)fromGazatoIsraelviatheErezcrossingtoreceivemedicalcare

atanIsraelihospital.ThePalestinianwasnotinvolvedinterrorismandwasaccidentallywoundedovertheweekendbyIDFfire.

Overtheweekend,threeambulancespassedthroughtheErezcrossingfromGazaintoIsrael.

In recent days, terrorist organizations in theGazaStriphave launchedmore than120 rockets and

mortarsintoIsraeliterritory.

Iron Dome intercepts eight rockets fired from Gaza

SinceThursday,soldiersoftheIAF'saerialdefense

networkhavesuccessfully interceptedeightrockets

usingtheIronDomesystem.

IAFCommander,Maj.Gen.IdoNechushtan,visited

thesiteoftheIronDomebatterydeployedinAshkelon

with Aerial Defense Network Commander, Brig.

Gen.DoronGavish,onSaturday(Apr.9).TheIAF

Commander spoke with the soldiers operating the

systemsaying,"Iamhappytohavestartedoutonthe

rightfootwithanumberofsuccessfulinterceptions

andIamsureyouunderstandtheimportanceofwhat

youaredoing."

Maj.Gen.NechushtanaddedthattheIronDomesystemisonlyatitspreliminarystagesofoperation

andthereisstillmuchtolearnaboutit."Thisisonlythebeginningofitsdeploymentandwehavetoput

Development of the "Iron Dome" System

TheprojectisleadbytheadministrationforResearchandDevelopmentofArmamentsandTechnological

Infrastructures(MAPAT).Themainindustriespartytotheprojectare:TheRafaelCorporation(chief

contractoranddeveloperofthelauncherandinterceptor);themPrestcorporation(sub-contractorfortheactualizationofthecommandandcontrolcenter);andtheALTAcorporation(sub-contractorforthe

radarandpowersystem).

seriesoftestswascompleted,includingthetestingoftargetdestructioncapabilities,interceptionof

targetsfromvariousranges,andinterceptionofavolleyoftargets.Asecondseriesoftestswascompleted

inJuly,andconcurrentwiththefinalindustrialdevelopment,theIDFisactingtoembedthesystemand

itsoperationalfitnessforusebytheIsraelAirForce.

Structure and Characteristics of the "Iron Dome" System

"Tamir"InterceptionMissile:Equippedwithanadvancedhomingheadandseveraldrivingsurfaces,

whichgiveithighmaneuverability.Itsmissionistodestroythetargetintheair.Themissileishighlycapableofinterceptinganythreateningrocketonthescene.

Inaddition,themissileiscapableofinterceptingtargetsinanyweatherconditions,andwasdesigned

tobehighlyeffectiveononehand,and(relatively)cheaptoproduceontheother.

Launcher:Independentunitdeployedinthefield,witheachsystemincludingseverallaunchers.The

launcherismobile,andtakesseveralminutestodeployandprepare.

FiringControlRadar:Themainsensorused toidentifytargetsandcontrol firingin the "IronDome"

system.Identifiesarocketlaunchandtransmitsthedataregardingitstrajectorytothecontrolcenter.

InterceptionManagementCenter:Thisis theheartof the"IronDome"system,whichcalculatesthe

expectedimpactlocation,itsfunctionistobringabouttheinterceptionofthetargets,andbasedonthe

overallthreatassessment,toprioritizetargetsaccordingtothepre-definedpolicy,causingtheinterceptor

tohomeinonthetargetinasafemanner.TheInterceptionManagementCenterishometothesoldiers

operatingthesystemwhoareincontactwiththerelevantcommandandcontrolauthorities.

Integration of the "Iron Dome" system within the Israel Air Force

Duetotheprojectbeingregardedasanemergencyproject,workonintegratingthe"IronDome"system

withintheAirDefenseCorpsheadquartersbeganconcurrentlywiththedevelopmentofthesystem.

Inthefirstphasewespecifiedthesystemrequirements,itsoperationalconcept,definedtherequired

manpower and the structure of the unit. In the next phase a startup nucleuswas established that

integratedinthedevelopingindustries,becameinvolvedintheindustrialdevelopmentandformedthe

basisofthecreationofthe"IronDome"unitwithintheIsraelAirForceAirDefenseCorps.

Upontheformationoftheunit,boththecorpsandunitembarkedonintensiveactivitydesignedtobring

thesystemtooperationalstatusasearlyaspossible,includingthecompositionofoperatingprocedures

andacquisitionoftheprofessionalknowledge.
