the few works on arithmetic (mainly its theoretical and mystical, rather than practical, aspects) to survive and consequently was famous during the Middle Ages. (See entries for Boethius).

Iamblichus (also known as Jamblicus) wrote a commentary on the works of Nicomachus. Although several early commentaries on Nicomachus have survived, this one is the most familiar. It is presented here in the original Greek with the Latin translation in the next column.

Camerarius (1500–1574) was a professor of classics in Tubingen and Leipzig. His commentary on Nicomachuswas the best of those written during the Renaissance. It would have been natural to put these two commentaries together in one volume.

The frontispiece shows hypothetical portraits of several Greek philosophers/mathematicians.

In 1934, just a year before its twenty-fifth anniversary (see entry for IBM; Festschrift, 1935), the German subsidiary of IBM held a celebration in which the firm dedicated itself to greater performance. There is very little of technical interest in this work, but the photographs of Nazi insignia and presence of Nazi officials at the ceremony speak volumes about the times.

Herb Grosch was a major figure in the early days of electronic computers. He was trained as an astronomer and worked for both G.E. and IBM. He was an early president of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He is best remembered for Grosch’s Law, which states that any computer twice as powerful as the one you currently use will cost four times as much.

Since 1940, IBM had been holding annual seminars for customers using its standard punched card accounting equipment for statistical purposes. This 1948 meeting (August 23–26) was the first to concentrate on large-scale scientific computing applications. This forum was held before the days of the electronic computer (except for ENIAC and the prototype Baby machine at Manchester, which had just run its first program). All the papers are concerned with the uses of IBM’s punched card equipment (including its newer, more powerful machines such as the model 602 calculating punch).

This catalog (complete with original mailing envelope) illustrates IBM’s products ranging from butcher’s scales, meat choppers and slicers, accounting machines and card punches to a variety of time clocks. It illustrates the roots of IBM as a major supplier of items other than punched card and computing machines. One illustration shows an early version of an IBM punched card with round holes.

Hurd was a mathematician who joined IBM in 1949. He became chief scientific officer and eventually a vice-president. He was intimately involved with many of its early computer developments from the time of the IBM 701 onward.

This seminar was held before any electronic computers were available in the U.S. (those at Manchester and Cambridge were just becoming operational) and several years before IBM had any commercially available computer products. The proceedings are notable for an early description of the IBM Card Programmed Calculator (CPC), which had been produced at the request of Northrup Aircraft, and a report of an early application of the CPC in the calculation of a cam design.

This is a continuation of the IBM seminars on scientific computation. One paper describes a pair of IBM relay calculators constructed for the Ballistics Research Laboratory at Aberdeen, MD. These were useful, but their limited storage and programming capabilities hampered their use in large-scale problems. The paper reports on an experiment of connecting them together, the duplex arrangement being more useful than the two individual machines. This idea, while novel, was not new. Two machines connected together was either a current working reality or under development in equipment being constructed at Bell Laboratories, Harvard and other centers at the time.

As the title indicates, IBM sought to broaden the subject matter of these seminars. The large number of these seminars held in a short period of time testifies to the increasing interest in these techniques.

The IRE and, in particular, its group interested in computers, which was to become the IEEE Computer Society—one of the two major computer organizations in the U.S. (the other being the ACM).

This work is a sammelband (binding together of a set of works) consisting of reports from four IRE National Conventions (1953–1956) on computer-oriented sessions held during the meetings. The first two are devoted mainly to analog equipment (but include a paper on the IBM 701 electrostatic memory unit) while the third considers diagnostic and reliability situations in some of the major computers then in operation (Whirlwind, IBM 701, the IAS machine, UNIVAC and EDSAC).

This one volume represents the convention records for four years and graphically illustrates the growing interest in digital computers. Each year the volume of material was larger and more sophisticated. Some of the most interesting items are

An attempt to represent the mathematical instruments and their more simple uses in their application to the producing of lines, surfaces, & c. in two books

This manuscript is divided into three sections—the third apparently not contemplated when the work was begun. The first, only seven pages, treats the basic geometry of compass and ruler; the second considers the various scales, compasses, protractors and sector usually found in a box of instruments; and the third, again short, contains various pencil sketches and methods for creating perspective diagrams. The section dealing with the sector is, by far, the most comprehensive and interesting in the work. The various plates are all meticulously drawn, usually in two colors of ink. The manuscript has been dated from the paper watermark, which reads “1828.”

This is a small book describing the usual drawing instruments and a Gunter’s quadrant. As might be expected, the description of the sector, which is not illustrated, gets the majority of attention in the section on instruments.

Irwin reports that the EDVAC, then being built at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering, at the University of Pennsylvania, would be put through tests in the summer and fall of 1948 and would be available for use by astronomers shortly thereafter. In fact, the machine was very late in delivery to the Ballistics Research Laboratory and did not run its first successful application until October 28, 1951. While it may have been of interest to astronomers to hear of the capabilities of an electronic computer, they would not actually get to use one until much later.
