    Year 2017 18

    June - August

    Issue 1

  • The title suggests that it is the sequel of the worst regional

humanitarian crisis in years. The heavy downpour reminded

everyone of the cloudburst on 26 July, 2005 which had paralyzed

the city. Torrential rains pounded the metropolis throughout

Tuesday, 29th August, 2017. The city gauged a whopping 298

mm of rainfall, the highest in a day in August since 1997.Three

persons, including two children, were killed in separate house

collapses in suburban Vikroli in the wake of torrential rains that

lashed the mega polis, police said. The present drainage system

in Mumbai was installed in 20th century and is capable of

carrying 25mm of water per hour. Also only 3 outfalls were

equipped with flood gates whereas 102 openings to sea were

open 24/. In 1990, an ambitious plan was drawn to overhaul the

citys water drainage system which would have increased the

capacity of drainage to 50mm per hour but the BMC Committee

rejected it on the grounds that the project was too costly. Since

then, the city suffered gravely twice and incurred losses of

millions. These rains were forecast well in advance. No special

event has triggered it. And it is not very unusual for Mumbai. It

has received more rains in the past. Is it the lack of

comprehensive efforts in building the resilience of the city

towards such events? Even as the country's financial capital

reeled under the impact of heavy rains, Shiv Sena, which rules

the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, on Wednesday,

complimented the civic body for ensuring that the situation did

    not go out of hand.

What do you interpret? Do you think that it was due to the

failure of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to plan

Urban Area development? Or is it lack of accountability, poor

governance and lack of coordination between local institutions

and the state government? May be it is the capacity of the

Mumbaikars to bounce back to normal routine immediately after

the disasters which has made the government complacent.

Though BMC has spent Rs 660 crore to deepen and widen the

Mithi River, the efforts have failed because of its incapacity to

remove encroachments along it. The Mithi overflowed on

Tuesday evening. "The Chhatrapati Shivaji flyover had to be

shut down as there was waterlogging in Dahisar East. Reliance

Energy disconnected power supply to all the buildings along the

Dahisar River. The Western Express Highway in Dahisar was

also water-logged as the river overflowed." All of us need to

ponder in this regard and do our best to ensure that the disaster

like this must not hit the maximum city again at least due to the

    callousness of any Mumbaikar.

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day,

Still the BMC is at play.

  • Dear Friends, 1st September 2017

Greetings to all of you as we prepare to celebrate Teachers Day. A sincere and

heartfelt word of thanks to all our teachers for their selfless and committed dedication to the

very precious task of helping our students grow not only in knowledge but also in wisdom

and in grace so that they may be able to realize their God given potential as human beings.

I am sure our students will pray in a special way for all their teachers and implore Gods

choicest blessings on them on this auspicious day.

I would like to thank and congratulate the editorial team of our E - Magazine as they place

before us the first issue of the year. The theme of this is MAGICAL MONSOON. The

monsoon is truly magical!! It is that season of the year during which the heat and dust of

summer is replaced with the pitter patter of rain drops that turns the earth into many shades of

green. The monsoon represents life, renewal, and blessings. This year we have been blessed

with very good monsoon. Nashik has received close to 160% of the average annual rainfall

and we still have a month to go before the rainy season is over. We must be grateful for such

abundance and resolve to use water wisely.

Two of the most serious problems we are faced with in our nation are the colossal waste of

water on the one hand and the tendency to pollute our water sources on the other. Both these

problems can be resolved with a little more careful planning at the macro level and a greater

sensitivity on our part at the local (micro) level. Each of us must resolve to do our bit to save

water and to make sure that we do not contribute to the pollution of our water resources in

any way. May our school be an example in this regard.

Wishing you all the very best! God bless you !!

    Sincerely,

    Fr. Ashley Miranda

    Rector

  • The menace of monsoon.

Floods, not always a bolt from the blue but many a times a manmade

disaster is an overflow of water on land. India has reported many cases of

floods in the bygone years. Floods have proved to be the true Menace of

Monsoon due to its various disastrous effects. The following are the various

instances of the infamous FLOODS that occurred in India from time to time.

Who can forget the havoc of deluge in the metropolitan and the

hell which broke loose on the denizens on 26th July 2005. When we take a look

at its causes; we get pretty surprised as the reasons are antiquated

drainage system, uncontrolled and unplanned development in suburbs

as well as destruction of mangrove ecosystems.

`The Mega floods of 2015 occurred when the rains lashed

the city and took lives of hundreds of people. These floods have been termed

as floods created by unrestrained infrastructure. It were the people

who caused this disaster not nature. The unrepressed constructions in the

name of the infrastructural development led to situations that failed in helping

the city sustain against such situations.

faces floods year after year. The biggest state in the North -

Eastern region is ravaged again and again by floods. It displaces thousands

and damages property worth billions but lessons are rarely learnt. While

natural topography and excessive rainfall are obvious causes, floods

are also caused by human interventionlike encroachment of river

banks and wetlands, lack of drainage, unplanned urban growth, hill

    cutting and deforestation.

A cloudburst centered on the North Indian state of in June

2013 caused devastating floods and landslides making it the country's

worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. The various reasons for

these floods were global warming, dearth of adequate planning, callous and

careless administration. While man has little or no control over the

of nature, he can certainly keep a check on his and minimize death and destruction caused by calamities like floods.

  • We all know the Playstation, the PC, the Xbox, the Gameboy, and all the other myriad examples of gaming devices out there in the world today. Gaming is a pervasive part of our culture, coloring everything from our choices in clothing to our taste in cuisine. There are even themed restaurants that are entirely dedicated to gamers and the games they love. Video Games Day is dedicated to recalling this defining part of our culture and sharing it with our fellow gamers, new and old alike. Get your game on!

History of Video Games Day The history of Video Games Day is really the history of the video games, and that history goes back much farther than most people imagine. The first game ever created is often thought to be Bertie the Brain, an artificial intelligence designed to play Tic-Tac-Toe. Considering that Bertie was a 4-meter-high machine built on vacuum tube technology, you can imagine it didnt get out much; in fact, it was disassembled after the Canadian National Exhibition revealed it, and never rebuilt. A year later a computer was built called Nimrod, Nimrod was a computer built and displayed at the Festival of Britain in 1951 and designed to play a game called Nim. From these humble beginnings things continued to build, first with Cabinet style games (those are the ones you put quarters in kids) which became hugely popular, and then into the first consoles, home based platforms you could play the games on. In the years that followed development of computers and video games just kept growing exponentially, until they now absolutely permeate our culture. What used to be a luxury item for the rich and elite has now become a standard part of most peoples homes, and a diversion that involves all ages.

How to celebrate Video Games Day Celebrating Video Games Day is both easy and fun, get together with your friends and play a bunch of video games! Dig out some of your old consoles and play favourites you havent touched in ages, and share them with the newest generation of gamers, or friends who just havent seen them. If you want to go all out you can even play an event at a local college or hall and have a bunch of people get together with game themed food and costumes, and of course decorations. Video Games Day is an excuse to go down a path of digital reminiscence, do it with a friend.

  • Come on my

    friends,

    Here is the

    rain.

    Let us take

    pleasure,

    Or all will be in

    Rain is very

    useful,

    For an Indian

    It is never bad

    in any season

    Because of a

    very special

    reason.

    Rainy season is

    my favorite

    In rain, we get

    In rain, we can

  • Rain is life.

Rain is the main factor of our life. Without rain there will be no life in this world. Rain is considered as a

source of water in our day to day life. We use water for so many purposes like drinking, cooking food,

washing etc. Plants, animals and other living things are also dependent on water. They also use it for their

growth. Nature sustains in the world only because of rain. Our planet Earth is also covered with water. The

water on the Earth is about 71 % but we use only 1 % of it.

Imagine, if there is no water in the whole planet. If there is no rain anywhere in the whole planet. Will

we able to live? No, every place will be dry and parched and we will die due to thirst. What will happen to the

living things, the human beings, animals and birds? This will lead to the end of the world. That's why, it is

important to use water carefully without any wastage of it. Now a days, due to large population and Global

Warming has made the scarcity of water more less. So, we must take a pledge that we will save our planet

without wasting water. Living with money is not important but living without water is danger for our life.

    NATURE

We live on the most beautiful planet Earth which has very clean and attractive environment. Nature is our best friend which provides us all the resources to lead a comfortable life. We should care for nature, make it peaceful, keep it clean and prevent it from the destruction so that we can enjoy it forever. Nature is a most precious gift given by the God to us to enjoy but not to harm. Nature provides us variety of beautiful flowers, attractive birds, animals, green plants, blue sky, land, running rivers, sea, forests, air, mountains, valleys, hills and many more things. God has created a beautiful nature for a healthy living. All the things we use for our living are the assets of nature which we should not spoil and damage them. Nature is like our real mother which never harms us but always nourishes us. Walking in the lap of nature in the early morning makes us healthy and strong as well as keeps us away from many lethal diseases like diabetes, chronic heart diseases, high blood pressure, liver problem, digestive system ailments, infections, brain disease, etc. It is good for our health to hear the soft sound of the birds, rattle of the breeze, sound of running fresh air, sound of running water in the river, etc. Nature is the most important and integral part of the lives of everyone. Everyone has been blessed with the true love of God in the form of beautiful nature. We should never miss the pleasure of enjoying the nature. Nature is the beautiful creation of the God. Nature is everything which surrounds us like water, air, land, sky, fire, river, forests, animals, birds, plants, moon, stars, sea, lake, rain, thunder, storm, etc. Nature is very colourful and has both living and non-living things in its lap. So let us preserve and conserve nature.
