A coach, especially one who just this past year became of legal alcohol-consumption age, might be put off

somewhat at learning that his college team had been sucked into the men’s division of Rio Grande Celtic 7s

due to a dearth of sides entered in its college division. Not so Littleton Collegiate 7s Rugby Club’s head coach

Ethan Pougnet: “It (the divisional upgrade) was surprising, but I knew the potential that our team had and I

expected us to do well, but not to win,” reported Pougnet.

The Collegians began pool play on Saturday with a significant win over

Clovis Nomads RFC out of Texas, 38-12. Next on the agenda was a

matchup versus tournament host, New Mexico Brujos; Littleton passed

that test with flying colors and a 33-7 scoreline.

Coll-7s only loss of the day came in the pool round to eventual title

opponent, El Paso Scorpions - Pougnet’s side fell on the wrong end of 21-19 tallies, but were able to make the

semifinals as the wild card team where they faced #1-seeded Albuquerque Aardvarks. “Our toughest

opponent was the Aardvarks, who were the number one seed, but we came out fired up and dominated.” In

the much-anticipated semifinal v the ‘Varks, Littleton won in a walk, 35-0. The Collegians would now face their

earlier nemesis, El Paso Scorpions, winners of the Rio Grande Rugby Union, in the championship match.

Littleton went up early in the first half, 12-0, but let the Stingers back in and they finished the period drawn,

12-all. But the academicians outscored their elder – yet not wiser! – brethren, 14-5 in the second half, for a

result of 26-17 to the Coloradans. “We won on top plays and strong runs by Cody Melphy and Jesus Flores,”

said Pougnet of his side that out-scored their opponents by nearly a three-to-one margin. Next up for the

Collegians are road trips to California for the Huntington Beach 7s,

June 22, and a return to Kansas City Blues RFC’s Friday Night Lights

7s Tournament on July 6, where they’ll defend their title won in

2012, also under Pougnet’s guidance. Also, of course, our own Denver

7s on July 20th at The Huge.

Of note: Coach Pougnet, has been called by his former coach at

Littleton Eagles, Charlie Reilly, “a coaching prodigy.” Regards his

astute command of the sometimes chaotic 7s scene, Ethan says, “I learned rugby at an early age from my

father, Mark, who grew up in South Africa… my cousin taught me techniques, which I share with players, and

also last year I learned a lot from Andre Snyman (Glendale Raptors RFC head coach). I grew up playing the

sport and watching, so when it came time for me to coach 7s I watched games (at all levels) and combined

strategies and plays used by countries all over the world to build a system that would play to our strengths

and utilize weaknesses most teams show. We play fast and attack, also slowing down when needed, but (we)

always utilize the space and 2-1s on the field.” Littleton Eagles U-19s side finished third at the Celtic 7s in the

U-19 Division. Odds-on we’ll be hearing more from Pougnet and Littleton this long, hot, 7s Summer!

Colorado Springs Grizzlies RFC finished in the top five (4th) at USA Rugby’s high school National Invitational Championships at Elkhart, Indiana last weekend in the multi-school division*. After defeating Westerville Worms RFC (Knoxville, TN) on Thursday to advance to the best four, the Grizzlies dropped their semifinal match against eventual tournament winner, United RFC (UT), on Friday.

The Grizzlies dropped their Saturday match to Danville (CA) RFC though, when asked if he was able to play his entire roster, head

barbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshuns

raptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsreds

coach Otis McGregor enthused, “Yes, and the grins were a mile wide! The only player who didn't play was my 8th grader who went along for the experience and to hang with his big brother, Max (Robeson).”

McGregor summarizes the Grizzlies season:

“As for the season, what a ride. Between the weather, injuries, and low numbers, this year was quite a season. We tried a number of different things to grow interest and the skill level of rugby here in Colorado. We started in the fall with the Colorado Crusaders camps and added in a high level Spring Break Camp coached by USA Eagles (James Paterson and Paul Emerick). Those events were an essential part of our success and really helped us to build the skill level of all involved.

Our team really pulled together this year. We had several injuries and the on again, off again eligibility of Mr. Sanchez, caused us some issues in establishing the back line chemistry early enough in the season to be able to play at the level we expect. Once we had that line established, we had

a season ending injury to our fly-half, which caused us to shuffle the line up again, moving a lifetime, open-side flanker to fly-half. The boys worked hard and adjusted to this diversity and made the best of the situation.

The one thing we lacked this year was game time. With only six scheduled league games in the Rugby Colorado Div 1, we need to find a way to get more time on the pitch competing. This year was worse, we only played four of the scheduled six games. One due to forfeit and the other due to weather and multiple attempts to re-schedule prior to state play-offs (failed). The lack of competitive matches hurt us at Nationals. While the boys performed exceptional in the first match, the level of competition naturally increased and the team had difficulty matching that level of play

due to the inexperience from lack of game play. In all, this was a great and successful season for the Grizzlies. We won the Colorado State Championship, and finished 4th at the HS National Invitational. I am very proud of how hard every young man on the team worked to pull together through all the adversity of this season and still be successful. Several of these young men graduate this year, a couple will go into the Service of our Nation, the rest hope to continue playing rugby in college. These young men have grown immensely this season and I have no doubt will be better men because (of their time with) the Grizzlies.”

Denver Barbarians have well-represented ERRFU and Western RFU at USA Rugby’s Division-1, clubside Round

of 16, in Irving Texas on the weekend in defeating a pair of California sides, Santa Monica Dolphins and

OMBAC, to return to Denver for their shot at USA Rugby Division-1 clubside title, June 1 & 2 at Glendale’s

Infinity Park Rugby Complex. Glendale Raptors beat 2012 D-1 champion, Belmont Shore, but were unable to

get by OPSB who are on the other side of the Best Four bracket and could be a finalist.

Barbarians play Life Running Eagles RFC in one semifinal, while OPSB test the tournament dark horse (but not

considered as such by those in the nose, tap-tap), NOLA – New Orleans RFC.

USA Rugby Women’s Eagles Camp: Reds v Blues, Sunday May 19

In the opening stages of the ten-day Test preparation camp USA

Reds topped USA Blues behind a pair of groundings by fullback,

Meya Bizar, hard-earned turnover ball in the loose and the smart

boot and swift distribution of standoff, Hannah Stolba. Reds ran out

to a 17-3 midpoint advantage and were able to widen that gap to

34-3 by referee Tim Luscombe’s last whistle.

Blues were on the front foot early, deep in Reds 22, but turnover

ball enabled Blues the opportunity to work their attacking schemes.

With a loose-piece breakdown inside Blues 22, swift

service by scrumhalf, Caroline White, allowed an

overlap that Stolba was able to capitalize with a skip

pass freeing wing, Ashley Kmiecik for the corner closing.

A vagrant and swirling wind denied the conversion and

Reds were up 5-nil in the ninth minute.

After re-start, steadfast forwards work by Blues had

play roundabouts the Reds 22 when an over-eager

raptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsredsraptorsreds

barbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshunsbarbarianshuns

defensive set was pinged as offsides, 25 out and just off the right post. A sticksplitter from Blues first five-

eigths, Aly Gleason, meant a 5-3 scoreline at minute 11.

An extended period of action between the 22s displayed players individual skills aplenty, but no further

scoring until Reds won an aerial exchange a were awarded a lineout 25 meters from Blues goal. Rapid

provision by White to Stolba saw the flyhalf distribute to a streaking Bizer; a hand off a defender and that #15

had raced to goal for the touch down and her own conversion: 12-3 Reds in the 25th minute.

Reds got another on halftime after multiple phases of work in the Blues business district had the ball mauled

across goal by the mobile Reds pack and grounded by

lock, Lauren Daly – 17-3 as the sides broke for the

halftime chat.

Opportunities abounded for each side during the first

forty, but passes left hanging in the wind dropped to

ground and kicks much above the surface went wonky in

the itinerant bursts of wind, causing possession issues.

However, each side was able to make progress when

keeping the goes from breakdown inclose and employing

first channel pod-smashes.

Fierce competition at breakdown hallmarked the second stanza and no points until replacement backrow lock,

Shaina Turley, was able to dot a pack try mauled into goal by her forwards: 22-3, Reds in the 58th minute.

Reds were back for more joy as blindside, Amanda Kingzett, was recipient of a sweet offload and crossed-and-

grounded to bring the tallies to 27 and 3 at minute 73.

Bizer had the last shout after splitting the centers on a miss-stunt that put her into the Promised Land

untouched for her brace @77’; with Bizer’s own ocnversion, a final result of 34-3, Reds over Blues, was

obtained at Luscombe’s last blast.

2013 Mini Golden Oldies - YouTube Bulletin # 2 – you may have to highlight, right-click and then choose “open

hyperlink”, but it is well worth the effort – Kudos, Bud Bilanich!

Team,

This is the second of many more information and facts about the up coming Colorado Mini Golden Oldies

2013.

We are going to have a "songfest" at both the opening party and the closing BBQ. Our own Billy "The

Songbird" Gregg is going to be heading up the singing, and bring back the 3rd period that we all used to love

and enjoy. We are requesting that you get a "Songbird" to lead your mates in the songfest from songs that is

your teams favorite. Just remember there will be children at this Festival.

Also another change has come about. The age of the youngest player is now 35 and not 45. Golden Oldie Rules

will be in place and explained in the next weekly bulletin

So plan on a great weekend before Aspen (which is Sept 12,13,14 & 15) and join all of your Colorado Mates in

this first Colorado Mini Golden Oldies Festival. I assure you this will be a great time and also have a really great

local beer made by Breckenridge Brewery and of course the great "chicken wings" served by the world famous

Hooters girls.

Please send your registration to Fred Alexander (at $100.00 per player & $50.00 per significant other). If you

do not have a team to play with sign up anyway and we will put you in touch with a team needing players. Tell

your masts about this Festival and have more fun,friendship & fraternity.

Till next week.

Super XV: weekend 5.17

4 penalty strikes from the toe of flyhalf, Beauden Barrett, were all the numbers Hurricanes could

count in a wet and windy Westpac Stadium on Friday; Barrett’s opposition, #10 Aaron Cruden, also

slotted four sticksplitters on a dismal (for him: 4-from-7) kicking evening; but the big, differential news

came at the 53rd minute when Chiefs openside, Tanerau Latimer, crossed from fifteen out for the only

grounding of the match and a final scoreline of 17-12 to the travelers;

3 converted trys for everybody, though three penalties struck true from fullback, Jason Woodward,

proved the margin as Rebels topped Stormers, 30-21, in Melbourne; four lead changes made for an

exciting show, but a penalty try award for conduct unbecoming (interfering w/man w/ball) put the

home side ahead in the 73rd minute, 25-21, and its conversion by Woodward along with a late penalty

goal from the #15, made for the result;

13 points from #10, Patrick Lambie, was sufficient to the Sharks task of overcoming a feisty Force side,

23-13, at Perth on Friday; three lead changes and two instances of knotted tallies meant for lively

action as the home side were up at the half, 10-7, yet they were unable to maintain that advantage;

13 also for Crusaders fullback, Tommy Taylor, as his side extended a 13-3 midpoint margin to 23-3 in

defeat of the Blues at Rugby League Stadium; trys by first five-eighths, Ryan Crotty, at the 25th minute

and tighthead, Owen Franks, early in the second stanza made the numbers for the Christchurchmen as

Crusaders are now on four victories running and have overtaken Blues on the table with the win;

Crusaders look to their visit to the North Island next week for their match with Chiefs, whom they trail

by half dozen table points though they’ve a game in hand regards the current NZ conference

frontrunners, as a critical stage in their campaign; nota bene: Crusaders will host those same Chiefs on

the first weekend in July;

1 half dozen points the margin of separation between Australian powers, Waratahs and Brumbies, as

that conference race got a tad tighter with ‘Tahs carrying the day, 28-22; Berrick Barnes, on in relief of

Rob Horne, at the start of the second stanza was significant in that the versatile back went to score

one dozen points on a try, a penalty and two conversions; Waratahs, who have gone 4-1 in their last

five contests, including a home result over Chiefs, probably need to win out to make post-season play;

Brumbies, on t’other hand, have lost two running now and are 2-2-2 in their latest six results; the

OzMob are in Auckland next week for a fixture with the Blues that is crucial to both sides;

4 scores and five table points for Bulls as they ran out to a 23-6 halfway margin over Highlanders at

Loftus Versfeld; Morne Steyn was good for 15 toe-tickets on three penalty strikes and three

conversions while the hapless, though much-talented, much-touted Highlanders continue to under-

perform and disappoint on the year with one lone victory and double-digit defeats;
