Hi-lights August 15th, 2011 Meeting

Treasurer’s Report

Ed Bangel presented the financial statements for period ending July 31, 2011. As indicated last month, we are in very good shape year to date.

Summer maintenance projects such as painting, siding, roofs and driveways hadn’t yet been com-pleted by July month end, therefore we are show-ing under runs. As these projects are completed, expenditures will fall into line with the budget.

Ed also announced that the 2012 budget process will begin shortly after Labor Day. He anticipated that the Finance Committee will have a first draft to present to the Board at the October board meeting.

Manager’s Report

Wynn Collins, EVHOA Maintenance Manager mentioned receiving a number of calls concerning unit fencing. After considerable dis-cussion, the Board decided on the following:

If a fence has reached the end of its useful life (determined by Wynn), the HOA will replace it and at that time the resident can request vinyl be installed. Prior to that time, if a resident requests to have their fence replaced with vinyl and the current fence is not

in disrepair, the cost of the replacement both labor and material will be at the homeowner’s expense.

Wynn also reported that paving had been completed by the meet-ing and sealing was beginning the week of August 15th. In addi-tion, painting would be completed by early September.

All other work is moving along and will hopefully be completed prior to the 1st sign of snowflakes!

Drainage Projects We were lucky enough to have a good stretch of weather to complete a couple of drainage projects around Erie Vil-lage. Many residents may have noticed the back hoe out front near the flagpole this past month. A new gabion “dredging” and pipe to rehabilitate existing drainage was installed in that area. New stone was put down and the area has since been re-graded and seeded.

In addition, fill was brought in to shore up the former boat launch at the Parkington Circle end of the lake path. Ear-lier in the season, large boulders were placed along the shoreline there to close off the ramp. Additional stone was put down on the path in that area also.

For those that might be wondering about the large concrete construction blocks on the far shore of Erie Lake in front of the bench, those were placed there to help fight erosion to the shoreline. Additional fill was also brought in to level out the grassy area in front of the bench.

Once the dirt settles a bit more in both areas by the lake, they will be smoothed out and grass seed will be put down.

Snow Plowing 2011-2012 After reviewing four bids for the upcoming plowing sea-son, the committee recommended to go with Oot Broth-ers. The Board unanimously agreed to go with the com-mittee’s choice.

Environmental The last water testing results for the Erie Lake beach area once again came back very good.

Of course, the swimming season is now coming to an end, so no further testing will be performed this season.

FEMA Dick Sparrow, HOA President reported that he spoke with Dave Tessier from the Town of Manlius and as of yet no official response has been received from FEMA.

We will continue to provide updates as they are received, in future newsletters.

Grounds Maintenance Some residents have expressed concern about the chemical treatments to our common areas. All herbicides and fertilizers are approved by the EPA for domestic use and are no stronger than what we can buy in a retail store.

So far, we have had 3 treatments and the next one is sched-uled for mid September. This treatment will be done along the rip rap and drainage areas around the ponds and lake.

The lawns will be treated, weather permitting, the week of Oc-tober 3rd to prepare the lawns for the long winter ahead. This treatment will contain Trimec 992 herbicide which helps to control broadleaf weeds. The nature trail and the lawns are always treated on separate days.

Utility Box Cleanup—A special thank you to Millie Sitnik for all her hard work in clearing a number of the power boxes within the village. After our transformer incident in early July, National Grid came through and did clear many of the utility boxes to allow access for repairs. Some of the boxes were missed and still needed to be thinned out a bit.

If you see an area that you believe was missed, please contact the office at 656-5148 so that we can address it.

Large Tree Comes Down During Recent Storm A large tree roots and all came down on Parkington Circle behind

units 23 and 24 after a recent heavy wind and rain storm. Fortunately, it avoided buildings and people. The tree was eventually cut up and removed by Michael Grimm Landscape & Tree Service.

Changes to Common Areas

Although the Board fully appreciates residents want-ing to make changes to the common areas around their units, it is important that those changes be sub-mitted in writing prior to commencement of the work to the Architectural Committee.

For some requests, additional information is needed in order for the committee to provide a quick re-sponse and may require a review by the HOA Board.

When submitting your requests it is advised that you provide as much information as possible such as landscaping plans including description of plantings, deviations from original design when you purchased your unit and whenever possible, the name and phone number of the person who will be performing the work.

Forms can be found online on our website or by calling the office at 656-5148.

Changes Continued

Requests needing prior approval with completed form are screen doors, brick walkways, gutters, plantings in-side and outside of white fenced areas as well as deck replacements or enlargements.

Residents may also be asked to obtain written approval from their neighbors if the change could affect them in any way.

Please try to avoid any embarrassment or additional cost. If work was done prior to approval, you may be asked to remove the items or the HOA will remove them for you at your expense.

Dear Neighbors, Friends and Acquaintances of my dad, Charlie Gioia, I thank you for your thought-ful and kind condolences, cards, donations and compli-ments about “Charlie”. Charlie and Rose enjoyed their retirement years at 47 Parkington Circle, being some of the first “settlers” of Erie Village in 1984. Charlie enjoyed entertaining his grandchildren on the lake, beach and trails. He and Rose, his bride of 67 years enjoyed guests and their home and surroundings.

Jowonio School, where Charlie’s great-granddaughter attended pre-school the past 2 years, thanks many of you for your kind donations. Five year old Amalia had a stroke when she was a week old and extensive brain damage. Jowonio School is a private school that pro-vided a unique and personal education for Amalia with a very caring and gentle staff.

Our family is very grateful for all your acts of kindness.

Sincerely and Gratefully,

Elizabeth West (Liz)

Safe Medication Disposal Made Easy!

You don’t need to attend special medicine drop off events to safely and properly get rid of your old medications in Onondaga County.

All you have to do is place them in your trash. Disguise the medication first, mix it into your garbage in coffee grounds or other materials so that it can’t be removed by a third party or pet and be ingested.

Do not dispose of medications down the drain or flush them down the toilet. Sewage treatment plants can’t fil-ter out medications and this can create harmful results in wildlife populations; fish infertility, etc.

ERIE VILLAGE BOOK GROUP DISCUSSION

Be kind to one another; a rising tide lifts all boats - American Proverb

The book group meets on the second Wednesday of each month At 7:00 pm. The book group encourages and warmly welcomes new members. Please call Janey Pajak 637-1761 or email [email protected] if you would like to join.

For August's meeting each of us shared our favorite books or authors. It was fun and engaging! We had everything from: The Snow Goose by Paul Gal-lico, written in 1940, Treasure Island, the timeless classic written in 1883 by Robert Louis Stevenson and illustra-tions by N.C. Wyeth, Leo Tolstoy's masterpiece and clas-sic, Anna Karenina to favorite authors such as David Baldacci, Jan Karon, Mary Higgins Clark, Michael Con-nelly, and John Grisham. Some of our members have read entire series such as that of Jan Karon, or most/all of an author's works such as John Grisham or Michael Connelly. Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza was mentioned for an inspirational true story about healing from war and personal loss. Other books summaries shared were: The Black Echo (Harry Bosch) by Michael Connelly, The Prince of Tides, by Pat Conroy, The Last Temptation of Christ, by Nikos Kazantzakis, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, a futuristic series of science fiction books, and finally, The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes by Du Bose Heyward and Marjorie Black (Illustrator) writ-ten in 1939 about the tale of an Easter bunny, in which kindness and cleverness win out over size and brawn, a gem of fantasy. (Thanks everyone for sharing your fa-vorites!)

Next Meetings:

September 14 at the Peer residence, 56 Parkington to dis-cuss Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese.

October 12 at the Thiras residence, 189 Summerhaven to discuss The Misadventures of Marvin by Marvin Druger. The author will be coming to the October meeting as a guest speaker, which we are all looking forward to!

In memory of Joan Eckweiler, we are reading and dis-cussing one of her favorite books, Irish Country Christ-mas by Patrick Taylor for the November 9 meeting at the Bartow residence, 433 Summerhaven.

Conversation Café—Still Meeting!
