The Trial• The Salem Witch Trials involved a series of hearings and prosecutions of people

practicing witchcraft. Taking place in Salem, Massachusetts and over 19 men and women were affected by these accusations made by the young girls who accused them. That start of these accusations began when Samuel Parris’s young daughter Betty Parris fell strangely ill in February of 1962. Claims were made to be that the young girl was diving under furniture, contorted in pain, and complained of fever. Soon after Betty Parris fell ill, so did other young girls in the village who were friends with her, including 11 year old Ann Putnam and 17 year old Mercy Lewis. It was said that these girls along with others were acting in strange behaviors and doctor William Griggs was called to examine the girls and said he found the girls behavior to be of supernatural origin. Over the course of the time that these trials were taken place numerous were falsely accused by this group of young ladies who had put on this show of supernatural phenomenon to clear their own names for participating in supernatural activities. By the end of this trial, 24 men and women had passed away either while in prison, hanged, and one individual pressed to death. January 1693: 49 of the 52 surviving people brought into court on witchcraft charges are released because their arrests were based on spectral evidence.
