U.S. President George W.Bush, on Monday, lifted a

White House ban on off-shore drilling to try to drive

down soaring energy prices, a lar-gely symbolic bid unlikely to haveany short-term impact on highgasoline costs.

With prices at the pump over $4 a gallon, Bush pushed the Dem-ocratic-controlled Congress toexpand offshore oil and naturalgas drilling in the Outer Conti-nental Shelf and give oil compa-nies access to the Arctic WildlifeNational Refuge.

High gasoline prices and soar-ing food prices have irked Amer-ican consumers in a presidential

election year, when Bushs Repu-blicans are trying to keep theWhite House and wrest control ofCongress back from Democrats.Today, Ive taken every step

within my power to allow off-shore exploration, Bush told re-porters.

This means the only thingstanding between the American

people and these vast oil resourc-es is action from the U.S. Con-gress. Congress too has a ban onoffshore drilling and while it ex-pires on Sept. 30, it could be re-

    newed.

would take years for any oil to be

Flintoffs no wizard, saysVaughanEngland captain Michael Vaughan warnedfans against expecting too much fromAndrew Flintoff after the all-rounderwas recalled in a 12-man squad for thesecond Test against South Africa atHeadingley, starting Friday. The fastbowler hasnt played Test cricket for 18months, since captaining England toAshes defeat against Australia atSydney in January 2007, because of ankle andside injuries. But he was added to the teamthat drew the first of this four-Test series atLords here Monday after proving his fitnesswith Lancashire. England have fielded thesame side for a world record six straight Testsand Vaughan, who plays at Headingley for

Yorkshire, was giving little away as to howroom might be found for Flintoff althoughthe out-of-form Paul Collingwood wouldappear to be the leading candidate to bedropped. Vaughans men badly missedFlintoffs extra pace and movement with theball when, after making South Africa follow-on, they only took three more wickets. Butthe England captain insisted the decision tobring back Flintoff had been a long time inthe planning and wasnt a knee-jerk reaction.I always had it in the back of my mind toget Freddie back into the team. He justneeded another game to prove to himself, said Vaughan. However, a cautious Vaughanadded: I think we are building him up a bittoo much, I think its a bit unfair on him. Heshad 18 months out of the game; hes comeback for Lancashire and done reasonably well.**Hes not a wizard, hes not going to comeand sprinkle dust, hes just going to comeand perform how he can.

Ayear ago when director Venkat Prabhu launched Chennai 600028,one hardly knew the bunch of youngsters who acted in the film. There was minimal publicity, but the gully cricket theme, a youth-ful team and some peppy songs worked wonders for Chennai 28

and Venkat Prabhu struck gold with his debut film. This time, withSaroja, it looks like he is setting the cash registers ringing right from themusic launch. At least, thats what the music launch ofSaroja on Mon-day at Chennai Trade Centre indicated.

Funky and fancyAn opulently decorated hall, with every table adorned with a poster

photographs of the cast of the film with little snippets about them. If thatwas not enough, the invitation spoke a lot more. Titled Times of Saroja, the four-page newsletter read and looked like a newspaper with differ-ent snippets and news reports on the making of the film. To add to allthis was the galaxy of stars, adding style and colour to the glitzy evening.

I still remember Yuvan calling me uncle as a kid when I was takinglessons from his father, joked A.R. Rahman while releasing the albumcomposed by Yuvan. I dont have to talk about Yuvan Shankar Raja orhis music. He has grown up to find his own feet. The film has six songs, including an Indian rock number. A montage songDosth bada dosth, shot on a highway, also promises torock youngsters.

Apparently, Yuvan had composed the songs in justtwo days.

Still guessing? It is I theFa gift hamper, one thatmanaged to sneak out andhere I am narrating my ex-perience at Ergoblitz.

The auditorium was setablaze with lights and the

    orchestra was settingup their instruments.

Before the showstarted just as I was rudely liftedup by my handle Isaw the techni-cians working onthe instruments

and Karthik run-ning to and fro try-

ing to make sure theevent started on time.

Rest of my kin were alsoplaced beside me to be dis-tributed (if any of you havemy brother Sporty or mysister Aloevera please re-port to Ergos lost andfound desk!).

Just as my uncle and I were

chatting up the judges arrivedand the auditorium became si-lent. Suddenly heard the drumsplaying but I couldnt see who

was behind it and I jumped withcuriosity, in vain. Desperate, Iasked one of the student report-ers to lift me up for a good look.To my utter surprise I saw a five-

year-old drumming away andan even tinier tot on the moroc-cus. It was an amazing sightbacked by a thunderous ap-plause from the audience.

The first round began. It wasthe melody round. Songs wereso slow that I ended up meltingone of the soaps (which was

why I was not given away. Ha!).

And every time I drifted off Iheard RJ Balaji saying, You willget a gift hamper from Fa if you There was the whistle girl

who took away my mommy andthen came the dancing boy whotook away my daddy. Otherdancers took away my aunty, uncle and granny (sigh!).

The worst part was there werethree student reporters (theydidnt want their names to bedisclosed. Hmph!) who wereeyeing me throughout the day. They knew I wouldnt be givenaway and ran to pounce on methe minute my caretakerturned. Suddenly my handle

    snapped and they could se

    everything!Next thing I knew was two o

the student reporters were onstage dancing. I knew for sure

would be one of theirs. But being the intelligent gift hampethat I am I hit beneath the seat

where they could not spot meThere were more rounds odancing and singing for whichmy kin were given away bunone of them could touch m*evil laughMuhahahahahahahaha!

*clears throat* so thats howthe day went. The second roundof music was the peppy beatround and all the teams sanamazingly well. Before I could

wake up from this reverie, thpro show started with younsingers Benny Dayal, RanjithKalyani and Swetha Mohansinging their hearts out to small but an extremely responsive crowd.

The night ended and sneaked out quietly before somebody could snatch me away

( Shhh.) I had a great timehope you guys did too.

Google spends $72 million a year on employee mealsSeventy-two million dollars a year -- that works out to about $7,530 per employee. While the exact details varydepending on location, employees at Googles California headquarters are welcome to at least two free meals a day fro11 different gourmet cafeterias. As if that werent enough, Google offers numerous snack bars that are chock-full ofhealthy morsels to munch on.

Google was originally called BackRubGoogle has an interesting upbringing, one that is marked by a lowly beginning. Google began as a research project inJanuary 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two Ph.D students, who argued about every single topic they discussed. Thincessant arguing, however, may have been what spurred the duo to rethink web-searching and develop a novel strategthat ranked websites according to the number of backlinks. Because of this unique strategy they nicknamed the searchengine BackRub which was dropped in 1998.

Google loses $110 million a year through "Im Feeling Lucky "When searching Google, you are given two options: "Google Search" or "Im Feeling Lucky." By clicking the former, youare given that familiar list of search results; by clicking the latter, however, you are automatically redirected to the firstsearch result, bypassing the search engines results page.

Google has a sense of humorGoogle also offers full language support for Pig Latin, Klingon and even Elmer Fudd. Anyone else still feeling lucky? Trytyping, "French military victories" and clicking "Im Feeling Lucky." Behold the result. You instantly got connected to abiography of President George W. Bush on the White House website. Now, before you jump to conclusions, this trick --which no longer works -- was carried out by members of the online community through the art of "Google bombing."

Google scans your e-mailsGoogle scans your e-mails (at Gmail) through a process called "content extraction." All incoming and outgoing e-mail isscanned for specific keywords to target advertising to the user. The process has brewed quite a storm of controversy, buGoogle has yet to back down on its stance.
