  • DTI Mission Statement

We proclaim Him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. I labor for this, striving with His strength that works powerfully in me.

    Colossians 1:28-29

PresenterPresentation NotesColossians 1:28-29, is the DTI Mission Statement. Pauls passion was (is through DTI) to help every believer to reach the level of spiritual maturity that God has intended. If Gods intention is for believers to become spiritually mature, then one must ask, why are so many believers immature?

  • Our Purpose for the Workshop Is there spiritual weakness in the Body of

    Christ? Why?

    Discuss some reasons

Present solutions to the problem of

spiritual weakness in the Body to reverse the trend.

PresenterPresentation NotesDefine Discipleship or more correctly redefine discipleship.

Is there spiritual weakness in the Body of Christ that you represent? (your church)

    Why?

Present a solution(s) to the problem of spiritual weakness in the Body.

  • The system you have in place is perfectly designed for the results

    you are getting.

    Leader

    follower

PresenterPresentation NotesInsanity can be defined as doing the same thing and expecting different results.

  • What is the typical Church MODEL for healthy spiritual

    growth?

PresenterPresentation NotesLets look at what we see as the normal way churches go about making disciples of Jesus Christ.

  • CORPORATE DISCIPLESHIP (Needed, but typically insufficient by itself to produce the desired results)

    BIBLE STUDY

    PREACHING

    SEMINARS & TRAINING

    SMALL GROUPS

    Teaching Gods Word

PresenterPresentation NotesMost likely your church is involved in these corporate methods of discipleship? But yet, this method BY ITSELF isnt producing the results that pastors and leaders desire.

  • Each local assembly of believers should seek to practice

Balanced Discipleship (BOTH Personal & Corporate discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth)

PresenterPresentation NotesMost leaders would agree that its a good thing to spend time individually with each new believer. When asked why they dont do that, leaders will often say that they dont have the time or the resources to accomplish that.

So whats the answer? Training people who CAN do it. Spread the responsibility out among the lay people. The biggest requirement for becoming a discipler is being faithful. This is, therefore, what we encourage church leaders to do. Find a few faithful men and women in your congregation and train them so they can mentor and spiritually parent each new believer.

Why isnt this being done now?

    1) The typical leader may not know how to train believers to disciple others.2) Discipleship has come to mean the presentation of Biblical truth in many churches. Often leaders present Biblical truth and then believe their responsibility has ended with sharing Gods Word, and assume that now the new believers spiritual growth is between that believer and the Holy Spirit. The problem is that in many churches, the idea is conveyed that to present Gods Word, you must have had Seminary or Bible schooling. Is it realistic to expect the typical Christian to have Bible school or Seminary training?

  • PERSONAL DISCIPLESHIP (Vitally needed,

    but frequently neglected)

    COMMITMENT

    MODELING

    INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION

    Teaching Gods Word

Each local assembly of believers should seek to practice

Balanced Discipleship (BOTH Personal & Corporate discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth)

PresenterPresentation NotesThe four components to the personal model of balanced discipleship are: Teaching Gods Word, Commitment, Modeling and Individual Attention.

  • PERSONAL DISCIPLESHIP (Vitally needed,

    but frequently neglected)

    COMMITMENT

    MODELING

    INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION

    Teaching Gods Word

Each local assembly of believers should seek to practice

Balanced Discipleship (BOTH Personal & Corporate discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth)

    PresenterPresentation NotesTeaching Gods Word

  • To know the Bible is good, but to intimately know and understand the One who the Bible reveals is better!

    Teaching Gods Word

  • PERSONAL DISCIPLESHIP (Vitally needed,

    but frequently neglected)

    COMMITMENT

    MODELING

    INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION

    Teaching Gods Word

Each local assembly of believers should seek to practice

Balanced Discipleship (BOTH Personal & Corporate discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth)

    PresenterPresentation NotesCommitment

  • A goal of the discipler should be to help the disciple to mature, function, be fruitful, and to spiritually reproduce. The benefits to the discipler are secondary.

    Commitment

PresenterPresentation NotesCommitment has to do with the heart attitude of the discipler (spiritual parent) in regards to the spiritual welfare and development of the disciple. This is a commitment that goes beyond just presenting God's word. The biblical idea of a disciple is more of an apprentice than just a student.

  • A Disciple of Jesus is more than just a student, hes an apprentice

    Whats the difference?

    Student

Disciple - wants to know what the teacher knows - wants to be like the teacher

PresenterPresentation NotesThe Biblical model of a Disciple is more of an apprentice than just a student. In the secular model of teaching (university) the student wants just to know what the teacher knows they want information. The student doesnt have to respect or have intimacy with the teacher. How the teacher lives their personal life is irrelevant. In the Biblical model of a disciple, the student wants to be LIKE the teacher.

  • PERSONAL DISCIPLESHIP (Vitally needed,

    but frequently neglected)

    COMMITMENT

    MODELING

    INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION

    Teaching Gods Word

Each local assembly of believers should seek to practice

Balanced Discipleship (BOTH Personal & Corporate discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth)

    PresenterPresentation NotesModeling

  • Modeling

We want the disciple to end up with the passion of the discipler.

Modeling goes beyond just teaching. o How do you teach patience, or

    faithfulness, or passion?

PresenterPresentation NotesHopefully the biblical disciple (apprentice) will end up with the passion of the discipler. The discipler is a model to the disciple, in ways that go beyond that of a teacher and student. How do you teach patience, or faithfulness, or passion? These things are seen more than heard.

  • PERSONAL DISCIPLESHIP (Vitally needed,

    but frequently neglected)

    COMMITMENT

    MODELING

    INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION

    Teaching Gods Word

Each local assembly of believers should seek to practice

Balanced Discipleship (BOTH Personal & Corporate discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth)

    PresenterPresentation NotesIndividual Attention.

  • The discipler should be prayerfully available to the Holy Spirit, to address the particular needs of the disciple.

    Individual Attention

PresenterPresentation NotesWe are not interested in academically presenting points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 to a disciple.

  • What is a Disciple of Jesus Christ?

    PresenterPresentation NotesIndividual Attention

  • PERSONAL DISCIPLESHIP (Vitally needed,

    but frequently neglected)

CORPORATE DISCIPLESHIP (Needed, but typically insufficient by itself to produce the desired results)

    Teaching Gods Word

Each local assembly of believers should seek to practice

Balanced Discipleship (BOTH Personal & Corporate discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth)

PresenterPresentation NotesTo conclude, we believe that wherever believers gather, Balanced Discipleship should be practiced. In other words, both Corporate and Personal discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth. The two types of discipleship each have their unique roles, and they complement each other.

  • To help a believer through the transition from the habit of daily living in self-dependence to the habit of daily

    living in God-dependence.

  • A newborn child requires an extra amount of individual attention. As the child matures guidance can increasingly take place in a group setting. Since each child is unique, it should be expected that both group and personal attention would be needed on the road to maturity.

PresenterPresentation NotesLets look at an analogy.

  • When you bring a newborn baby home from the hospital, you don't just set them down and say, "Welcome to the family, Johnny. Make yourself at home. The towels are in the hall closet upstairs, the pantry is right here, the can opener is in this drawer. No crying
