Groundwater Notes 23Groundwater – water that soaks in the

ground & collects in rocky pores (pores – space between rocks)

Permeable – allows water to flow easily through (ex: sandstone)

Impermeable – Doesn’t allow water to move through b/c of small, few or no pores (ex: clay)

Aquifer – layer of permeable rock that lets water move freely

For Teacher Demo:

4 150 ml beakers

1 large beaker (1000ml) or 1 gallon container

3 cups 9 oz tall clear cups with hole in center

3 pieces of filter paper placed in cups

Each cups filled about ½ way with sand, clay (powder) or gravel

Ended up using the same gravel, sand and clay all day

At end of the class just poured out the excess water

(Each lab tray had clear cups with samples of clay, sand and gravel, magnifying glass, color pencils)

For TeacherHad class go ahead and make observations on handout 1. Have 4 student volunteers handle the timing. I had one

person pour 100 ml of water into each of the cups. (Stoff used 50 ml) Three other students did the timing. I had the students take the cups to their seats while the water was still dripping .

2. Told students to let me know when at least 90 ml had poured through

3. Then went over definitions and picture slide. Came back to the time slide. Had students finish questions 1-3 from lab. Next went over questions slide finishing with them answering all the questions.
