Web Content Filtering SoftwareFor home access, if you are using security or Web content filtering software, it is possible that some content (such as audio files) may be blocked. As with pop-up blocking, you can either disable these filters or create an exception for the epsbooks.com website.

Additional Program Requirements

Depending on the customer’s network security settings, certain ports may need to be opened for the connectivity from the client device (a computer or mobile device) to the server.

EPS Programs require use of the following ports:

• 80 for Apache Web Server• 4900 for the database• 4910 for JBoss• 5910 and 5911 for Portfolio for Academy of READING

If you require assistance, contact the EPS Technical Support team at [email protected], or call us at 800.225.5750, option 4.

A home connection must provide a consistent bandwidth speed of 500 Kbps or greater. This is within the range of most Internet service providers’ high-speed connectionofferings. Consider that other factors (e.g. streaming audio and video or security updates) can affect download speeds. For issues with a slow internet connect, contact your internet service provider for assistance.

Accessing EPS Online Programs from HomeEPS online programs are Web-based and can be accessed through your computer’s Web browser(e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome) at home.

Getting Started for School Coordinators

Adding Staff Members to the Management SystemYou can add School Coordinators, School Administrators, and teachers to the Management System so that they can manage classes, schedule tests, view reports, and monitor individual student progress. You can do so manually or by importing a .csv file.

Creating a .csv FileYou can import staff members to your school by using comma-separated values (.csv) files. You can create these files using programs such as Microsoft Excel or text editors. To ensure all staff members are imported successfully, the .csv files must be formatted correctly.

The Management System recognizes three roles you may assign to staff members: School Administrator, School Coordinator, and Advanced Teacher. If you are missing information, insert a comma in that field. The table below details the proper fields for import:

Field DescriptionLASTNAME Each staff member’s last name (required).

FIRSTNAME Each staff member’s first name (required).

MIDDLENAME Each staff member’s middle name (optional).

USERNAME

The name each staff member will use to log onto the Management System. Each user name must be unique and assigned to one staff member only. The user name is not case-sensitive and you can use letters, numbers, spaces, ampersand (&), apostrophe (‘), period (.), hyphen (-), underscore (_) and the at sign (@). The user name can be up to 30 characters (required).

PASSWORD

The password each staff member will use to log onto the Management System. Each password must be unique and assigned to one person only. The password is not case-sensitive and you may use all characters/numerals, but spaces are not allowed. The password can be up to 30 characters (required).

ROLE

Each staff member must be assigned to one of the following roles (required):• ADVANCEDTEACHER (teachers)

• SCHOOLADMIN (School Administrators)

• SCHOOLCOORD (School Coordinators)

EMAIL Though not mandatory, it is a good idea to enter email addresses for each staff member, if you have them.

Your .csv file should look something like that pictured below:

Page 15: EPS Program and Apps User Guide - School Specialty€¦ · EPS Program and Apps User Guide ... Galaxy Tab 7 and later P P P X P a P ... The EPS Management System, typically used by

15© EPS 2015

Getting Started for School Coordinators

To import staff members using a .csv file

1. Ensure your .csv file is saved on your local machine.

2. Log into the Management System. 3. Click the System tab.4. In the Tools menu, click Import staff

members. 5. On the Import staff members page, click

Choose file. 6. Browse to and select your .csv file.7. Click Import.

When the file has been imported, a summary screen displays. This screen details how many staff members were successfully imported and describe any errors encountered. Errors generally include things like duplicate user names, missing user roles, or incorrectly formatted .csv files. Consult the online help for more information on possible errors.

To add a staff member manually

1. Log in to the Management System.2. Click the Users tab.3. In the Staff members menu, click Create a user.4. On the Create a staff member page, assign a

user role by choosing an option from the User role list.

5. Enter the following information for each user: • first and last name

• middle name (optional)

• email address (optional)

• user role

• user name (this is system-generated, but you may change it if you wish)

All new users can now log in to the Management System to create classes and/or add students to classes.

6. Click Save. 7. Repeat the steps above for any users you wish

to add.

Fields with an asterisk (*) are mandatory.

Mobile Device Setup for EPS Apps

Several EPS online programs are available as apps, and can be downloaded and used on your mo-bile device, from anywhere!

Before logging in for the first time on your mobile device, there are a few steps you must complete. Make sure you have the following ready:

• The app downloaded onto your mobile device from Apple’s App Store, Google Play, or Amazon.

• Your domain name. This was sent to you in your EPS Activation Email. • Your database name. This was sent to you in your EPS Activation Email. • An EPS user name/password. All student user names and passwords are available in the

EPS Management System. Contact your School Coordinator if you need help.

Set upOnce you have downloaded the EPS app onto your mobile device, click the app icon to start.

The first time you log in, you must enter your domain name. These identifiers ensure you are connecting to the correct server and able to access your programs. Some applications may ask for the database name. This is optional. If you know your database name, enter it here, too.

Many EPS online programs are ready to use on your mobile device. Some can be downloaded as apps and, after completing a few short set-up steps, are ready to go. Other programs are accessible on your mobile device as long as you use Puffin Academy.

You may have already used the Puffin Web Browser, which enables students to access Flash-based programs on the non-Flash-supporting iPad. Students can access any site through the Puffin Web Browser, regardless of the safeguards put in place. Unlike the Puffin Web Browser, Puffin Academy is a free app that provides students with a safe environment in which to access only approved educational sites online. The EPS Login page is one of the approved sites, which means students can log into any supported EPS program on their mobile and educators/parents can let them work worry-free.

The steps to get started in Puffin Academy are outlined below. Make sure you have the following ready:

• A mobile device connected to wi-fi• A valid user account for an app store• A valid domain name to access your students’ EPS Login page (this was sent to you in

your EPS Activation Email).

Setting up Puffin Academy3. Install Puffin Academy from your app store onto your mobile device.

Note: All EPS servers residing outside your district’s firewall are accessible using Puffin Academy. If you have an EPS server installed within your district’s firewall, you will not be able to access any EPS online products using Puffin Academy, but may continue to use EPS online products on a desktop or laptop.

4. When installed, click the Puffin Academy icon on your mobile device. The Puffin Academy home page displays.

5. Create a bookmark to your students’ EPS Login page. You will need the domain name for this step. (The domain name for your students’ EPS Login pages was sent to you in your Activation Email.)

a. Tap the menu icon in the top right corner.

b. Tap the Add to bookmark icon.

c. Enter the name for this bookmark and the URL to your student’s EPS Login page by enter-ing the domain name, NOT an IP address. It should be something like: http://epsonline.epsbooks.com/academy/login.do.

You must create a bookmark to access the EPS login page. Puffin Academy only recognizes approved sites, and it accesses those sites through bookmarked URLs.

Logging into EPS Programs with Puffin Academy

5. Enter the proper login cre-dentials and click Login. Each student’s user name and pass-word is available in the EPS Manage-ment System. School Coordinators can access any student’s information; teachers can only view information for students in their own classes.

We encourage teachers to review the information presented in the next few pages, and to spend some time going over these steps with your students. One of the biggest differences between using the programs on a desktop or laptop and using them on mobile devices is getting used to Puffin’s trackpad. A few short demonstrations should help students get started. Keep the following points in mind when using EPS online products with Puffin Academy:

• students should use Puffin’s trackpad (see below) to complete most activities.

• For exercises requiring a keyboard, students can bring up, close, and split the key-board at any time without affecting progress in the program. Closing or splitting the keyboard allows all questions and answers to remain visible, ensuring maximum usability. Students can also scroll up and down using the scroll bar.

• Students can alternate between landscape and portrait mode by turning the mobile device to free up more screen space.

Academy of MATH® is a systematic and web-based intervention solution that helps at-risk elementary, middle and high school students in math.

This program must be used with Puffin Academy on mobile devices, not-ing that:

• Some navigation buttons appear close together on the screen; there-fore, students must be careful to select the correct button.

Academy of READING® is an intensive, online intervention program for struggling readers.

This program must be used with Puffin Academy on mobile devices. Some tips include:

• Some navigation buttons appear close together on the screen; there-fore, students must be careful to select the correct button.

• The Bluetooth® keyboard is recommended for certain exercises, such as Visual Match and Auditory-Visual Match, in which students’ response times are recorded and used in evaluation.

Note that this document only applies to the EPS student interface. The EPS Management System may be used on any device with any web browser.

MCI Online is a blended learning solution that provides targeted literacy intervention for struggling readers in middle and high school.

Though most activities in MCI Online can be completed on a mobile device using Puffin Academy, the Tell-a-Friend activity cannot, as Puffin Academy does not yet support voice recording.

Ensure MCI’s “Tell a Friend” audio recording activity is turned off in the EPS Management System. You can set this activity to “Off” for the whole class. When set to “Off,” it will not appear in the student interface and students can proceed through all other activities.

Path Driver for ReadingTM is a powerful, online assessment system for grades K-10 that provides fast, accurate measures of reading.

Students can use Puffin Academy to complete Path Driver for Reading’s maze assessments; however, as Puffin Academy does not yet support voice recording, students will still have to complete Oral Reading Fluency assessments on a desktop or laptop computer.

Wordly Wise Science and Social StudiesTM is designed specifically for stu-dents who struggle with the specialized vocabulary of Social Studies and Science. Accessible vocabulary for grades 4-8 helps students improve their comprehension of content-area texts.

This program must be used with Puffin Academy on a mobile device. Some tips include:

• Students can drag the scroll buttons using Puffin’s trackpad, or they can tap the arrow buttons on the scroll bars to move up and down.

• If audio is played while the passage is on screen, the passage will scroll down automatically.

• If students make a mistake while typing, they must tap the letter they wish to change and type over it.

• Students can use Puffin’s trackpad for drag-and-drop activities, or they can double-tap and drag the item directly on screen.

• To submit a response, students can either tap “Return” on the keyboard, or close the keyboard and tap “Done” on screen.

Programs not requiring Puffin Academy

The EPS eBooks decodable and leveled reader libraries provide a vari-ety of engaging books to suit students of all reading abilities in kinder-garten through grade 8.

The EPS eBooks app can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store, Google Play, or Amazon Market. It does not require Puffin Academy.

S.P.I.R.E.® Touch PhonicsTM is a mobile application that provides dy-namic, digital manipulatives for Phoneme Segmentation and Word Building.

It currently works on iOS devices only.

Note that the S.P.I.R.E. Touch Phonics app provides an easy-to-use digital alternative for Steps 2 and 3 of S.P.I.R.E.’s ten-step lesson plan. It does not contain all activities/features of the S.P.I.R.E. print program.

Wordly Wise 3000® Online is a dynamic and interactive program that helps students master the academic vocabulary they encounter in school every day.

An app version is available for download from Apple’s App Store, Google Play, and Amazon. Puffin Academy is not required.

Please note the following: Path Driver for MathTM is not currently recommended for use on mobile devices. Path Driver for MathTM is an online, research-based mathematics assessment intended for universal screening and progress monitoring of kindergarten through grade 10 in a Re-sponse to Intervention environment. For this product, we determined national norms (grade-level benchmarks) by conducting a two-year study.

For each probe of this product, students have limited time to answer as many questions as they can. Therefore, reaction time plays a crucial role in students’ performance. Some researchers have found that kids of the same age as Path Driver for Math’s target popula-tion who use trackpad vs. mouse are less accurate and have greater reaction time. Therefore, responding to questions on a mobile device may affect student performance and incorrectly place them in a lower proficiency group. This is highly expected to be the case with students’ performance on the estimation probe.

Portfolio® is an optional add-on to Academy of READING® designed to improve students’ reading fluency. As voice recording is not currently supported by Puffin Academy, students are unable to complete these exercises on a mobile device.
