Wait for the LORD and keep
his way. He will exalt you to inherit the
land; when the wicked are cut off, you
will see it. Psalms 37:34
There is usually a huge gap be-
tween the birth of a dream and the
achievement of that dream. The ques-
tion you have to ask yourself is whether
it will be a fulfillment gap or a frustra-
tion gap. If it’s a frustration gap you’ll
be miserable most of the days you’re in
it. And every day that you’re frustrated
instead of fulfilled, you lessen the odds
that you’ll be able to keep moving for-
ward toward your dream. Author Seth
Godin calls this gap between when you
set out to do something and when you
actually start to see significant results,
‘the dip.’ The dip represents the adver-
sity you must face, the learning curve
you must go through, and the hard
work you must be willing to invest be-
tween conception and realization. If the
dip you are in seems to be a road with-
out end, here are some Scriptures you
need to stand on: ‘Don’t be impatient
for the Lord to act! Keep travelling
steadily along his pathway and in due
season he will honor you with every
blessing.’ ‘Do not throw away your
confidence; it will be richly rewarded.
You need to persevere so that when you
have done the will of God, you will re-
ceive what he has promised’ (Hebrews
10:35-36). ‘So we fix our eyes not on
what is seen, but on what is unseen.
For what is seen is temporary, but what
is unseen is eternal’ (2 Corinthians
4:18). God has promised you more than
just the fulfillment of your dream; He
has promised joy in each step you take
toward it.
Prayer Heavenly Father, give me patience as I
faithfully move towards the things You
have placed before me. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
Are You Fulfilled?

From The Desk of Pastor Nebel:
“Dads and Grads”
June is the month for Father’s Day. I don’t
think we get as worked up about this day as we do
for Mother’s Day, or at least we observe it differ-
ently. Dad does not get a flower to wear to church
(unfortunately too many dads don’t attend, see be-
low). The card we give to Mom is most likely emo-
tional while the one we give to Dad says something
funny about his weight, his lack of hair or his cloth-
ing choices (or is that just my experience?).While
we take Mom out to eat at a restaurant, we probably
barbeque in the backyard for Dad.
These differences reflect the different roles
our parents play in our lives. Mothers are known for
the nurturing and raising of children while fathers
are seen as, um, well, uh, dads, too often expendable
and sometimes completely absent, either emotionally
or physically. This is a problem, especially when it
comes to the faith life of our children.
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to
anger, but bring them up in the discipline and in-
struction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4, ESV). The
Bible addresses us dads specifically when it comes
to the Christian upbringing of our children. Yet too
often fathers pass this privilege off to the mothers,
thinking that Christianity is just for women and chil-
dren. This attitude has consequences in the lives of
our children.
Studies show that when both parents are ac-
tive in worship, three of four children will be active
in worship as adults. If only mothers are active in
worship, only 15 percent of children will be active
worshippers as adults. But if only the fathers are ac-
tive in worship, half of the children will remain ac-
tive in worship in their adult years. The example of
the father when it comes to the Christian faith has a
greater influence on children than that of their
mother.
While we think of fathers as teaching their
children how to play sports, go hunting, work on
cars and mow the lawns, God has given dads the re-
sponsibility of passing on the knowledge of Jesus as
Lord and Savior to our children. The worse possible
thing I could imagine is that when Christ comes on
the day of His judgment I would be on His right side
with the other sheep for salvation but seeing my
children on the other side with those who are con-
demned because I did not do my job of leading them
to and teaching them of Jesus.
Fathers and sons may get much attention (“a
chip off the ol’ block”) but the relationship between
dads and daughters is very important, though often
overlooked. Years ago I heard that fathers talk with
their daughters on average only 37 seconds a day. If
true, this is very sad. Too many fathers are absent
emotionally or physically on a daily basis from their
daughters. When a father is not intentionally active
in a positive way in his daughter’s life, she may look
for a male influence or role model through a rela-
tionship with a much older boy. This usually turns
out poorly. Carey Casey, Chief Executive Officer for
the National Center on Fathering (and former chap-
lain to the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs)
says, “Girls are more secure when their father is in
the home…Every child needs a father, grandfather,
or father figure. When they have that, they can
thrive” (The Rotarian, April 2011, page 17).
Christian Education Opportunities...
We do intend to continue Christian educa-
tion opportunities during the summer here at St.
John’s. Vacation Bible School will be held from
June 24 to 28. Adult Bible Class will meet on Sun-
days from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
Men’s Bible Breakfast will meet on June 1, 15, July
6 and 20.
Our Board of Education is also planning spe-
cial activities for Sundays at 9:30 a.m. this summer.
These are geared towards family involvement (dads,
see above). They will include devotions, a Bible les-
son and a fun event. We need your participation! In
order to have enough materials for these days, we
also need you to sign up in advance, either on the
sign-up sheet at church, on the previous Sunday or
by emailing the office at [email protected].
Since no other churches in our area provide Chris-
tian education on Sunday mornings in the summer,
this could be a time to invite a friend to join you here
at St. John’s.

Congratulations Graduates... Congratulations to those who have celebrated a graduation this past month. Your family of faith here at St.
John’s is proud of your accomplishment. We pray that God will continue to provide for you in the future as He has
blessed you in the past. We trust that our Lord has a plan and purpose for you to use the ability and intelligence that
He has given you along with the education and formation you have received in school to be a blessing and benefit to
the world around you.
I also note with pride and joy the role that a number of our high school members played at the recent Red
Bud High School graduation. Successful in many areas throughout the year, Emily Harms and Mackenzie Dilley
were two of the valedictorians for their class as well as Illinois State Scholars and Mackenzie also was class vice-
president. Also outstanding in many ways this year Brandy Reinhardt served as their class president. They gave very
nice speeches as part of the ceremony. Emily, Mackenzie, Mary Deterding, Andrew Quinn and Sara Siegfried were
recognized for Four Year Honor Roll. Mary, Emily, and Andrew also were honored for Prairie State Achievement.
Serving as Junior Marshals that evening were St. John’s members Maria Miller and Joshua DeRousse. St.
John’s members Larry Gielow (president), Norb Kassing (vice-president) and Rick Stenzel serve on the Board of
Education. St. John’s members Christa Brundage and Sarah Heller teach in the math department at Red Bud High
School.
May God bless your days in the upcoming months. He never takes a vacation from us. I hope that we do not
try to take a vacation from Him but remain active where He is present for us, through His Word proclaimed and His
Sacraments administered in worship. Your servant in Christ,

From The Desk of Pastor Koen:
One day as Lauri and I were walking into Sam’s with
Kadence she was singing at the top of her lungs: “If I
were a butterfly, I’d thank You Lord, for giving me
wings…. For You gave me a heart and You gave me
a smile. You gave me Jesus and You made me Your
child. And I just thank You, Father, for making me”
The people were turning around looking at her and
smiling as she sang from her heart about Jesus.
Kadence was the “ONE” whom God used to touch the
lives of those at Sam’s that day.
Are you the “ONE” who will make a difference in your
life and the lives of those around you? Jack Buck was
only one person, but he affected the lives of many peo-
ple in a positive fashion as the St. Louis Cardinal’s
Baseball Announcer and as a fabulous fundraiser for
charitable causes. Susan B. Komen was only one per-
son, but, as a cancer victim, she also inspirited many
people by her determination and positive attitude while
fighting this disease which affects so many individuals
and families.
You also are only one person. There is no one else that
God has called to do the living acts of kindness and to
perform the works assigned to you. You are the
“ONE”! You are God’s hands and feet reaching out to
change the lives of those around you. God called you
into His holy family the day of your Baptism and em-
powered you through the presence of His Spirit to
touch lives with His saving message of forgiveness.
God continues to call you each day as He sends you
opportunities to tell the people you meet the way Jesus
has changed your life.
The mission of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the goal
of God's ministry are to help you to be the man, the
woman, the youth, the child; God has called us to be.
He calls us to be His extraordinary servants who ea-
gerly serve Him as we serve one another. His Spirit is
actively working in our lives through His Word and
sacraments molding us, sanctifying us, into witnesses
who proclaim His amazing power at work in our lives.
God is always working through His people,
calling us and sending us out to do His work.
This has not changed since the time of Moses,
Esther, David, Mathew, Paul, Luther and our
grandparents. God called them in His unde-
served love and He sent them out in His al-
mighty power to be the “ONE” who would
bring eternal life to all who would call on His
Name.
He works the same way with you and me. Re-
member the Great Commission Jesus gave us:
“To go and make disciples!” A disciple is the
“ONE” who tells what Jesus is doing for us by;
“Making disciples, teaching, baptizing, and
serving one another.”
We all need to, and can say; “I am the “ONE”
who through Christ Jesus can make a difference
in this world. I am the “ONE” who has been
blessed by my Heavenly Father and saved by
Jesus my Savior. I am the “ONE” who is filled
with the gifts of the Spirit, who is called and
sent to share the message of salvation. “I thank
You, Father, for making me “me.”
Your Brother in Christ

From the Principal:
I know I say it every year, “Where did
this school year go!”? It seems the year
passes much too quickly! We had a great year
with lots of opportunities to grow and learn.
Many thanks to all who work so hard to make
our school a great place to learn about our Sav-
ior, Jesus Christ, we feel very blessed to be
here at St. John’s. Many parents, grandpar-
ents, special friends and congregation members
make St. John’s what it is today. Our faculty
and staff thank you for these blessings.
On the last day of school we had our
closing Chapel Service and Awards. The awards
are listed separately. We have so many gifted
and talented students. The picnic that fol-
lowed was fun for everyone, thank you picnic
committee for planning such a great day! On
May 23 we held the Commencement for the 8th
grade. Mr. Brenden Heller gave the Valedicto-
rian's Address. Mrs. Deitt Schneider an-
nounced the seventeen students who received
their diplomas by School Board Chairman, Mrs.
Chris Gidley. The class chose as their Class
Verse: Psalm 77:11-12 "I will remember the
deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember Your
wonders of old. I will ponder all Your work, and
meditate on Your mighty deeds." The Class
flower was the Hibiscus and the Class Colors
were Royal Blue and Lilac. The Salutatorian's
Prayer was given by Miss Sydney
Schweizer. The Scholar Athlete was Miss
Cameron White. Brenden, Sydney and Cami
each received $50 from the St. John’s Parent
Teacher League. The class sang their song,
"Children of God" accompanied by John and Mi-
chelle Christman. Twelve students, 70% of the
class, earned the President’s Award for Educa-
tional Excellence. These students were: Gavin
Braun, Taylor Dilley, Brenden Heller, Ember
Marshall, Tessa Miller, Clara Nebel, Justin
Prost, Joshua Sallman, Sydney Schweizer, Nick
Valerius, Skylar Valleroy and Cami White. Mr.
John Christman presented Sydney Schweizer
and Brenden Heller with scholarships to Christ
Our Savior Lutheran High School in the amount
of $200 and $300 respectively. A reception
followed in the Fellowship Hall.
As one year closes we are in the process
of making plans for next year. We look for our
enrollment to increase as several new families
will be joining our school family. Don’t forget
to mark your calendar for July 10 from 4-8 PM;
this will be our registration night for K-8th
grade. We will be happy to see you and catch
up on summer activities!
Have a blessed summer,
Deitt Schneider
