4 EPISCOPAL ORDINATIONS

Welcome, friends, to this wonderful occasion, as we welcome Monsignor Anthony Randazzo

and Father Richard Umbers as auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Sydney. Our two Bishops-to-be will be welcome additions to our Archdiocese; between them, they will bring the experience of parish priest, seminary rector, church judge, university chaplain, lecturer in philosophy and theology, canon lawyer, and member of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith! We are truly blessed to have such talent and wisdom among us.

I greet the priests, deacons, religious and lay faithful of the church of Sydney and beyond. This is a night of great rejoicing for all in the Archdiocese. I welcome visiting bishops and priests from surrounding dioceses and beyond. I would also like to acknowledge Bishop Terence Brady, who has shouldered the work of three auxiliary bishops and even, while I was in hospital, administered this Archdiocese in my absence!

These times call for bishops of faith and compassion, of courage and mercy. Pope Francis has expressed confidence that our soon-to-be Bishops are the men for this job. It will therefore be my privilege to ordain the new Bishops tonight.

I ask you to pray for our two new bishops who, I’m confident, will make enormous contributions to the leadership of the Church and the pastoral care of the people of Sydney and beyond in the years ahead. I believe the people of Sydney will find that they have two new shepherds who are young and energetic, intelligent and gifted, with great vision and humour, with heads focused on the new evangelisation and deeply pastoral hearts.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORDMr Philip Tighe-Umbers reads

THE FIRST READINGIsaiah 61:1-3,6,8-9

THE spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up hearts that are broken; to proclaim liberty to captives,

freedom to those in prison; to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord, a day of vengeance for our God, to comfort all those who mourn and to give them for ashes a garland; for mourning robe the oil of gladness, for despondency, praise. But you, you will be named ‘priests of the Lord’, they will call you ‘ministers of our God.’ I reward them faithfully and make an everlasting covenant with them. eir race will be famous throughout the nations, their descendants throughout the peoples. All who see them will admit that they are a race whom the Lord has blessed.

Ms Jeanette Melotti reads

THE SECOND READING2 Corinthians 4:1-2. 5-7

SINCE we have by an act of mercy been entrusted with this work of administration, there is no weakening on our part. On the contrary, we will have none of the reticence of those who are

ashamed, no deceitfulness or watering down the word of God; but the way we commend ourselves to every human being with a conscience is by stating the truth openly in the sight of God. For it is not ourselves that we are preaching, but Christ Jesus as the Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. It is the same God that said, ‘Let there be light shining out of darkness’, who has shone in our minds to radiate the light of the knowledge of God’s glory, the glory on the face of Christ. We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.

± Glory to you, O Lord.

PHILIP found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, the one about whom the prophets wrote: he is Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.’ ‘From

Nazareth?’ said Nathanael ‘Can anything good come from that place?’ ‘Come and see’ replied Philip. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, ‘ere is an Israelite who deserves the name, incapable of deceit.’ ‘How do you know me?’ said Nathanael ‘Before Philip came to call you,’ said Jesus ‘I saw you under the g tree.’ Nathanael answered, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.’ Jesus replied, ‘You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the g tree. You will see greater things than that.’ And then he added ‘I tell you most solemnly, you will see heaven laid open and, above the Son of Man, the angels of God ascending and descending.’

And so, dear brothers, do you resolve by the grace of the Holy Spirit to discharge until death the oce entrusted to us by the Apostles, which we are about to pass on to you by the laying on of our hands?

e Bishops-elect reply

THE PRAYER OF ORDINATION

GOD and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all consolation, who dwell on high and look on the lowly, who know all things before they come to be; and who

laid down observances in your Church through the word of your grace; who from the beginning, foreordained a nation of the just, born of Abraham; who established rulers and priests and did not leave your sanctuary without ministers, and who, from the foundation of the world, were pleased to be gloried in those you have chosen:

All the ordaining Bishops quietly join the following part of the prayer:

Pour out now upon these chosen ones that power which is from you, the governing Spirit, whom you gave to your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, the Spirit whom he bestowed upon the holy Apostles, who established the Church in each place as your Sanctuary for the glory and unceasing praise of your name.

e Archbishop alone continues

Grant, O Father, knower of all hearts, that these your servants, whom you have chosen for the oce of Bishop may shepherd your holy ock. Serving you might and day, may they fulll before you without reproach the ministry of the High Priesthood, So that, always gaining your favour, they may oer up the gis of your holy Church. Grant that, by the power of the Spirit of the High Priesthood, they may have the power to forgive sins according to your command, assign oces according to your decree, and loose every bond according to the power given by you to the Apostles. May they please you by their meekness and purity of heart, presenting a fragrant oering to you through your Som Jesus Christ, through whom glory and power and honor are yours with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever and ever.

31ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL, SYDNEY 24 AUGUST 2016

Remember, Lord, your servants N. and N. and all gathered here, whose faith and devotion are known to you. For them, we oer you this sacrice of praise or they oer it for themselves and all who are dear to them: for the redemption of their souls, in hope of health and well-being, and paying their homage to you, the eternal God, living and true.

In communion with those whose memory we venerate, especially the glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ, and blessed Joseph, her Spouse, your blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter and Paul, Andrew, James, John, omas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Jude; Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Lawrence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian and all your Saints; we ask that through their merits and prayers, in all things we may be defended by your protecting help.

erefore, Lord, we pray: graciously accept this oblation of our service, that of your whole family, which we make to you also for these your servants, Tony and Richard, whom you have been pleased to raise to the Order of Bishops; and in your mercy, keep safe your gis in them, so that what they have received by divine commission they may fulll by divine assistance.

Be pleased, O God, we pray, to bless, acknowledge, and approve this oering in every respect; make it spiritual and acceptable, so that it may become for us the Body and Blood of your most beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

On the day before he was to suer, he took bread in his holy and venerable hands, and with eyes raised to heaven to you, O God, his almighty Father, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and eat of it,for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands, and once more giving you thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it,for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.

Do this in memory of me.

Fiat Voluntas Tua – “Your will be done” Matthew 6:10

Page 43: Episcopal Ordinations Most Reverend A. RANDAZZO & Most

43ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL, SYDNEY 24 AUGUST 2016

The arms and motto which the Bishop has adopted are of a personal character and are blazoned, in the language

of heraldry, as:Blazon: Azure a lion rampant Or armed and langued

Gules holding in its left paw a sword upright Argent and in dexter chief an eight pointed star Argent.

In the vernacular, the arms may be described as follows:On a blue field a lion rampant with red claws and tongue

holding an upright silver sword and in the upper left a silver eight pointed star.

The lion makes reference to the Bishop’s Italian and Scottish heritage.

The eight pointed star represents Mary, Mother of God, and baptism. The Bishop was baptised at Mater Dei church Blakehurst. The star is also a reminder of Mary’s “fiat” to the will of God at the annunciation (cf. Luke 1:38).

The sword represents the Word of God which is alive and active (cf. Hebrews 4:12) and is also symbolic of Saint Paul, the Apostle to the Nations.

The Lion has its eye fixed on the star, its hand firmly on the sword and its tongue extended in proclamation of the Word.

The blue background brings together three elements: Mary, Mother of God - the first disciple and missionary; Pope Francis - who nominated Bishop Randazzo to the episcopal ministry; and the name Randazzo - from the Randazzo arms.

The arms are surmounted by the traditional green hat (or galero) of a bishop with six tassels (or fiocchi) on either side and the gold processional cross of a bishop.

The motto, Fiat Voluntas Tua, “Your will be done” is from The Lord’s Prayer found in Matthew 6:10. It carries a profound meaning which unites the believer to the Incarnation and Mission of Jesus Christ. Through the Will of God, heaven and earth were united when the Word became flesh. Through Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit all of creation is drawn into the divine life where God reigns for all eternity.

To pray “Your will be done” is not merely to accept one’s lot in life, be it good or bad. Rather, it is to surrender oneself in humility to the infinite love and mercy of God, who sent His only Son into the world so that we might have life in all its fullness (cf. John 10:10). Furthermore, in the Spirit of Christ, “Your will be done” is to embrace the mission to announce the Good News of salvation to all the world.

Bishop Randazzo has been appointed Titular Bishop of Quiza in the late Roman Province of Mauretania Caesariensis which is located in modern Algeria.

The Bishop’s arms were designed by Fr Guy Selvester and Richard d’Apice and were illustrated by Sandy Turnbull.

45ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL, SYDNEY 24 AUGUST 2016

The arms and motto which the Bishop has adopted are of a personal character and are blazoned, in the language

of heraldry, as:Blazon: Argent on a throne Azure between two crosses a

book Argent bound Or with the word VERBUM Gules and on a chief Gules a lion passant Or holding in its dexter paw a panache of three toe toe flowers Argent.

Argent, between two crosses crosslet Sable upon a large throne Azure an open book Argent, bound Or, with the word “Verbum” on the pages Gules; on a chief Gules a lion passant Or holding in his forepaw three flower stems (kākaho) of the toetoe grass Proper (Austroderia toetoe).

In the vernacular, the arms may be described as follows:On a silver (illustrated as white) field between two black

crosses with each arm crossed a large blue throne upon which is placed a silver book bound in gold bearing the Latin for The Word. The red chief bears a gold lion walking and carrying in its right paw three flower heads of the toetoe grass.

The motto, Faith and Reason, is drawn from the title of an encyclical of St John Paul II. Faced with today’s fragmentation of knowledge, the unifying task of wisdom calls for the mutual support of Christian revelation and a realist metaphysics. These elements infuse culture with dynamism and hope.

The lion passant is not only an allusion to NSW but is itself a reference to the Plantagenets and the deeply Christian roots of our English heritage. It also represents confidence in the incarnation and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The clutch of toetoe, native to Aotearoa, show that this message reaches even to the ends of the earth.

The crosses are from the coat of arms of the Tighe family and represent the Holy Land - the fifth Gospel. The historical witness of the Gospels and of Jesus should be defended with vigour since it is the basis of our faith. And fundamental to this knowledge of the Word as a real human being in our history is His mother, Our Lady, the Seat of Wisdom.

The arms are surmounted by the traditional green hat (or galero) of a bishop with six tassels (or fiocchi) on either side and the gold processional cross of a bishop.

The Bishop’s arms were designed by Fr Guy Selvester and Richard d’Apice and were illustrated by Sandy Turnbull.

NOTE OF THANKS

Fiat voluntas tua.

We take this opportunity to give thanks to God and ask God’s blessing upon all who have made this

celebration possible. As we commit ourselves to the mission of Christ, the

Good Shepherd, we cast our minds to that moment when a young maiden named Mary responded with a generous “yes” to become the Mother of God. We are deeply thankful that she said yes.

The Word became flesh through Mary’s fiat and by the power of the Holy Spirit. In the same Holy Spirit we join our “yes” to that of the Mother of God.

We rely upon your prayers, especially the prayers of the sick, the suffering, and the poor, which strengthen us and remind us that we serve the Church as disciples of Christ the Lord.Thank you.

Fides et ratio.

St John Paul II called for a new evangelisation of countries that had formerly been Christian. Our Faith in Christ is

a source of wonder to many of our friends and colleagues but it is a faith that is eminently reasonable.

Through our intellectual defence of the truth of human dignity, the hospitality we extend and the affection with which we receive each person, we pray many souls will be attracted to the Catholic Faith.

What feeds such human warmth? Our Faith. Faith in the personal relations of the Blessed Trinity. Faith in the Incarnation of the Word. As successors to the Apostles, we are now sent in Christ’s name to make disciples of all nations. This is our Faith and we are proud to profess it.

47ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL, SYDNEY 24 AUGUST 2016

St Mary’s Cathedral is the spiritual home of Sydney’s Catholic com-

munity. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney, and stands on the site of the first Catholic Chapel in Australia. Constructed in local sandstone, the “Gothic Revival” style of its architec-ture is reminiscent of the great medie-val Cathedrals of Europe. St Mary’s is not only a great legacy from the past,

however: it is a vital part of the present spiritual and cultural life of the city and the nation. The Cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians.

William Wilkinson Wardell was commissioned by Archbishop Polding to design a new St Mary’s following the fire of 1865 which ruined the original Cathedral.

Wardell was born in 1823, and as an architect in England had become an accomplished practitioner of the Gothic Revival style championed by A.W.N. Pugin, and like Pugin, Wardell became a convert to Catholicism.

He came to the Australian colonies in 1858, living in Melbourne. Wardell designed several important buildings in Melbourne, including St. Patrick’s Cathedral. In Sydney, St. John’s College within the University of Sydney stands as further testimony to his skill. Polding wrote to Wardell, “I leave all to you and your own inspiration in the matter. I will not even say that your conception shall be restricted to the Gothic style of any particular period. Any plan, any style, anything that is beautiful and grand, to the extent of our power.” (letter of 10 October, 1865).

THE HISTORY AND ARCHITECTUREOF ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL

Constructed of dressed Sydney sandstone, St Mary’s stretches some 106 m in length, and the central tower rises to 46 m. When the intended spires were built in 2000, the Cathedral soared to 75 m.

St Mary’s is designed principally in the Geometric Decorated style of Gothic which first evolved around the 13th century. It is not a copy of a particular medieval Cathedral, but is a unique design, drawing on certain elements of its medieval forbears. In keeping with many medieval English Cathedrals, there is a strong emphasis on the length-wise dimension of the building, while viewed from the side it is more reminiscent of a typically French Cathedral. Viewed from the front facade, it is also like a French Cathedral, with twin towers flanking a rose window.

A visitor to St Mary’s will see many features on the outside of the building: the flying buttresses of the chancel and nave; the canopies and statues in the northern gable; the text of the Ave Maria and other invocations carved high up on the walls; the many carved saintly heads which gaze benignly down, and, way up on the towers and turrets, the more menacing figures of the gargoyles.

Moving inside the church through the main doors, the eye is drawn forward, along the length of the nave, toward the white pinnacles of the High Altar Screen, and the rich colours of the Great North Window beyond.

Located beneath the nave, the crypt, last resting-place of the deceased Archbishops of Sydney, is notable for the beautiful terrazzo mosaic floor, depicting the story of the Creation, and symbolic titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
