CELEBRATING OVER 150 YEARS INTHE DIOCESE OF UTAH

As we enter our 151st year, we continue to reflect on our history. Forty-eight yearsago this month, the diocese's oldest church building, St. Mark's Cathedral in SaltLake, was added to the Registry of Historic Places by the Office of Archeology andHistoric Preservation in Washington D.C.

The certificate, pictured above, recognizes the significance and architectural value ofthe building and "encourages its preservation." It is signed by the Utah Governor atthe time, Calvin Rampton.

Bishop Hayashi's First Reflection on Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

Our diocese is honored to have our Canon to The Ordinary(now former CTO) Mary June Nestler called to be the newcourse director of St. George’s College in Jerusalem. MaryJune has been teaching at the college for thirty-five years.Jerusalem is her favorite city in the world and now she livesthere full time. Craig Wirth and I travelled to Jerusalem to bepresent at and to participate in her commissioning service. We were also privileged to have Mary June take us to variouslocations in Jerusalem and beyond and have her share withus from her great knowledge of the area, its history, andpresent day life. It is my hope that in 2020 we will be able to have a pilgrimageexperience to the Holy Land offered to people of our diocese.

Indeed, another reason for going to Jerusalem was to do reconnaissance work for such apilgrimage. I will be writing and posting to the Diocesan Facebook page my reflections about my tripthere and some of the learnings and inspirations that I experienced.

Craig Wirth also had a nice chat with Mary June on-camera. She shares her love for Utahand the many places in Jerusalem that remind her of her former home. To see the video, click here.
