From your Rector
EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF ST. THOMAS
Dear Friends,
I am writing to tell you I have ac-
cepted a call to a new church in Vir-
ginia. I will be nearer my family and
closer to home. My time at St. Tho-
mas has been wonderful and I have
loved being part of this lively and vi-
brant congregation. It has been an
honor for me to be Rector of this par-
ish and fellow worker in this portion
of the Body of Christ. Over the last
eight years we have accomplished
many things of which we can be
proud. I am convinced that this will
continue as St. Thomas begins a new
chapter in its almost 300 year his-
tory.
My last Sunday will be August 27,
2017, and a goodbye reception will be
held on Sunday, August 20 after the
10 AM service. I will miss each and
every one of you, but I know that
there are good things in both our fu-
tures.
Please be aware that the Executive
committee (Len Walker, Lisa
Benedetti, Mike Stagliola, and Jim
Medeiros) has already begun to pull
together next steps in the process of
selecting our next priest to lead St.
Thomas. Len, Lisa, and Mike have a
meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Au-
gust 1 with Rev. Jean Baptiste
Ntagengwa, Massachusetts Diocesan
Director of Transition Ministry.
The Executive Committee feels
strongly that a committed search
committee will be critical to our suc-
cess in selecting a new priest. If you
would like to serve, please give your
name to a member of the executive
committee.
The Executive Committee also in-
tends to take full advantage of this
opportunity to hold congregation-
wide conversations about what you
love and hope for in St. Thomas, the
challenges we face, and your expecta-
tions for your next clergy leader. I am
convinced that the current leadership
is sound and will lead this congrega-
tion forward to new and greater
things.
Blessings,
The Reverend Dr. Rich Bardusch
Rector

O gracious and loving God, you work every-
where reconciling, loving and healing your
people and your creation. In your Son, and
through the power of your Holy Spirit, you
invite each of us to join you in your work.
We, young and old, lay and ordained, ask you
to form us more and more in your image and
likeness, through our prayer and worship of
you and through the study of your scripture,
that our eyes will be fully opened to your mis-
sion in the work. Then, God, into our commu-
nities, our nation and the world, send us to
serve with Christ taking risks to give life and
hope to all people and all of your creation.
We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Dear Friends in Christ,
I would like to take this opportunity to write this letter of thanks and
appreciation to all those who took part in contributing to raise money to-
wards my tuition for B. C. C., it will ease one of my heavy burdens. Words
cannot express my deepest gratification. The kindness and generosity dis-
played by all of you has deeply humbled me.
Thanks to Father Rich who made my journey to Ordination to the
Diaconate all possible. I would also like to thank him for his continuous help
in mentoring me along the way, I have learned so much about the Church
under his guidance, supervision and leadership. I could not have accom-
plished this much without his help and yours.
I also thank God for all of you, for it is only in Him and through Him
that we can do anything good. St Thomas Church is a Godly, supporting,
and nurturing place and I am so proud to call it home.
May God continue to bless each of you as the Church thrives and
grows. Please keep me in your prayers and I will keep you in mine. Ten
thousand thanks to all. Sincerely in Christ. Sonia Hodge

During the past year, the young children of our parish have enjoyed a casual
service at 9 AM directed by Fr. Rich with all children participating in light-
ing candles, taking the offering and helping in many ways.
This coming year, under the direction of Annemarie Amoedo, the children’s
services will continue. Plans are being made to expand the program which
is geared toward children 0 - 8 years of age (the ‘young at heart’ are always
welcome to attend as well).
Watch for more information and sign-up sheets during the Homecoming

Belize Mission Trip Photos Courtesy of Fr. Rich
The group participating in the Belize Mission Trip this year experienced some unexpected challenges as they were faced
with a hurricane and a monsoon (with wild thunderstorms and flooding in the streets). According to Andrew Francis, the
2 AM burst of thunder sounded like a bomb exploding right in his room. Their unexpected help in boarding up windows
and cleaning up in the aftermath was much appreciated. They did, however, get their painting of the school and repair of
the walkways done as planned. The enthusiasm of the people in spite of their living conditions was very moving.
The group did enjoy some time to visit Cahal Pech (Mayan Ruins) and do some swimming, scuba diving, etc. They will be
making presentations and showing pictures of their experiences in the fall.

I would like to thank everyone who donated items to the yard sale. We were

Also, I would like to thank the many hands that made the job bearable.
Though the day was hot, I enjoyed the camaraderie of the parishioners. St.
Thomas is fortunate to have so many wonderful people who come out and
support its numerous missions.

St. Thomas Church hosted a lawn party in honor of the Taunton River Deanery
Altar Guilds. There were some fun opportunities to learn from clergy through-
out the Deanery. Good food was enjoyed by all. All in attendance had the op-
portunity to meet people from other Altar Guilds, to share stories and socialize.

BRIEF HISTORY—Thomas Coram, a wealthy sea captain and philanthropist, arrived
from England in the 1690’s and established a successful shipyard on the Taunton River.
He returned to London in 1703 and left behind 59 acres of land in trust and a substan-
tial collection of books to help found a Church of England in Taunton.
Twenty-five years later Thomas Coram’s intent was carried out. In 1728 a congregation
of lay persons gathered and a small church was built on the outskirts of town near the
Three Mile River on what is now Tremont Street. Although the land trust was no longer
available, Coram’s library of books became the basis for the young parish’s ministry. The
church was named St. Thomas.
During the Revolution, St. Thomas Church, like most Episcopal Churches, fell upon hard
times and was closed for a number of years as were many others in the area. The build-
ing itself stood unused and blew down in the Gale of 1815. In 1820 the parish was
incorporated. In 1828 the Vestry voted to seek a minister who was called and then a
new building was erected in the center of Taunton on High Street across from the pre-
sent building.
The church grew rapidly leading to the enlargement of the building in the 1840’s and
this, too, was soon outgrown. The third and present structure designed by Richard Up-
john was consecrated in 1859. A chapel was added in 1869. A fire gutted the Church
sanctuary in 1898, but it was rebuilt with the addition of a large three-manual Jardine
organ in 1899.
The historically significant 1759 McKinstry House (present rectory) adjacent to the
church was purchased in 1907 for use as a Sunday School. In 1910 Mr. & Mrs. Walter
Cabot Baylies donated a Sunday School building. This parish house has proven to be of
immeasurable value throughout the years to the church and to the entire community. In
1960 ground was broken for an addition to the parish house which completed the com-
plex of buildings as we know it today.
