The Word of the Lord

The Lessons The people sit. The First Lesson Genesis 1:1-5

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Psalm 29: 1-9 Frederick Ousley

The Second Lesson Acts 19:1-7 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They replied, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." Then he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism." Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of

repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophe-sied-- altogether there were about twelve of them.

The Gospel Mark 1:4-11 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have bap-tized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Be-loved; with you I am well pleased."

A Special Greeting to Visitors

Welcome to those of you here for the first time. The Episcopal Church offers all the sacraments of the Catholic Tradition to anyone who is a bap-tized Christian and who desires such sacrament. Please feel free to come to the communion rail to receive the bread and wine, or to receive a bless-ing. All are welcome to the rail, as all are welcome to reverently receive the heavenly food of God.

Please fill out a Visitor Card located in the pew. We’d love to send you our weekly electronic newsletter, so please add your e-mail address. You may also use this for your donation to the church to place in the plate during the offertory anthem. The priest will be available after the service to answer any questions you might have.

Bowditch School Update Our January activity is writing letters to the 4th graders. I ask each of you to write a one paragraph letter telling what was/is your most interesting job and why. This will broaden the student's thinking about what possibilities are out there for them. You can use any paper you wish, just leave your let-ter at the church office and we will bring them to school. I think this will be fun for all involved. - Laurel Meeting: On Saturday Jan. 17th at 9am, there will be a meeting of those who are interested and involved in the partnership to discuss a new piece of the partnership and plans for this ongoing program. I hope each of you will be able to be there. There will be coffee, tea and something good to eat February Dance: On February 6th from 6-8, Grace Church will host a dance for these students and their families. Please save the date now so you can come and dance the early evening away and have fun with our adopted class of students. More information will follow. After School Program: We are applying to be an official after school pro-gram for the fourth graders at the Bowditch School. This will mean that the schools will provide transportation to Grace Church for students enrolled in our program. If approved, we will be offering musical instruction on Wednesdays followed by other projects such as cooking, reading and crafts. We will keep you updated on our progress and of ways you can support this endeavor as we continue to support the fourth graders at the NBS. .

Sundays in January

Here are some highlights of our celebrations this month on Sundays. Today at 9:00 am, Young and the Restless Chapel will sing the story of the star that led the Three Seekers to the Baby Jesus. May we too ride our camels to Bethlehem! January 18 at 10:30 am, join us as we observe the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special service of music from the African-American tradition. All are welcome to attend. Please consider joining us for any or all of these events as we ring in the New Year and celebrate the season of Epiphany.

Come and enjoy a time of quiet reflection and prayer while meditating on readings with music from the Celtic tradition. This hour long time ends with a common meal or communion. Healing prayers are also offered at this time. Consider giving yourself this gift of an hour with God in peace. It is a wonderful way to start the week. There will be a worship discussion following Celtic Meditations for all interested.
