As part of EPC Exhibit 122-8, the change of the heading at 730 from “Plastic arts Sculpture” to “Sculpture and related arts” and the relocation of standard subdivisions of plastic arts from 730.01-730.09 to 730.1-730.9 were approved. (See pages 17-19 of this cover letter for the approved development.) At Meeting 129, we proposed changes to 753-758 Iconography of painting and the relocation of comprehensive works on graphic art from 760 to 740. These changes were also approved. The PDF associated with EPC

Exhibit 130-31 includes all of the approved changes from meetings 122 and 129 and the proposed changes discussed below.

Assemblages, constructions; kinetic, sound sculpture; land art; mixed media and composites

Assemblages, constructions, sound sculpture, land art, mixed media, and composites are schools and styles of 20th century art. Thus, the instruction not to use numbers in 730 but in 709.04 should be part of the “however” portion of the add note at 735.2304 Schools and styles of 1900-1999. We deleted the class-here note at 730 and added references at 735.2304. A reference to 709.04073 for kinetic sculpture was not added, since it is indexed to 735.230473.

The deletion of the dual heading and associated notes were approved as part of EPC Exhibit 122-8 Dual Headings.

Ceramic arts and Pottery

Ceramics (738) is divided into pottery (738) and glass (748). Pottery is divided into porcelain (738.2) and earthenware and stoneware (738.3). However, pottery is sometimes equated only to earthenware or stoneware. Another problem is that porcelain, which was invented in China, did not reach other parts of Asia until the 9th century and Europe before the 17th century. Thus, ancient pottery in specific parts of the world other than China was either earthenware or stoneware and is classed in 738.309, not 738.09. (124 titles are classed in 738.0932-738.0939 Pottery in parts of ancient world other than China in WorldCat.) The Manual-like note at 738 was modified as follows: 1) to indicate the two meanings of pottery, 2) to clarify how to classify ancient pottery, and 3) to read similar to text in Manual entries:

Use 738 for pottery in the broad sense covering porcelain and earthenware or porcelain and stoneware. Use 738.3 for pottery in the narrow sense limited to earthenware or stoneware. Because porcelain, which was invented in China, did not reach other parts of Asia until the 9th century and Europe before the 17th century, ancient pottery of a place other than China was either earthenware or stoneware and is classed in 738.309, e.g., pottery of ancient Italy 738.30937, Aztec pottery 738.309720902

The same note was added at 738.3.

One would think that the products of pottery, either porcelain or earthenware and stoneware, would be classed at either 738.28 Specific porcelain products or 738.38 Specific earthenware and stoneware products. However, the word “Specific” in each heading means that products in general cannot be classed in 738.28 and 738.38; they should be classed instead in 738.2 and 738.3, respectively. (“Specific” has been part of each heading since Edition 16.) The class-elsewhere note at 738 indicates that ceramic sculpture is classed in 731-735. The class-elsewhere notes at 738.28 and 738.38 indicate that specific products are classed in 738.4-738.8. In fact, the only types of product that

are classed at 738.28 or 738.38 are tableware and vessels. In order to make this clear, we changed the headings at 738.2 and 738.3 to “Tableware and vessels.” We also added a standard-subdivisions-are-added note, and deleted the class-elsewhere note to 738.4-738.8. At the same time, we added references to 738.2, 738.28, 738.3, and 738.38 at 738.4-738.8.

Because “Specific” was used in the headings at 738.28 and 738.38 in Edition 22, the heading at 738.4-738.8 could not also use “Specific.” Thus, that heading was “Specialized products and techniques of making them.” Once we removed “Specific” from the headings at 738.2 and 738.3, “Specialized” was changed to “Specific” in the heading at 738.4-738.8.

Currently at 738.3809, there is a note to class geographic treatment of earthenware and stoneware products at 738.309. This could be interpreted to mean that ancient and classical Middle Eastern and western vessels should be classed in 738.30932-738.30939; however, they are classed in 738.382. We added a reference from 738.3093 to 738.382 to make this clear.

The same problem with “Specific” also occurs with 738.27 Specific types and varieties of porcelain and 738.37 Specific types and varieties of earthenware and stoneware. Comprehensive works on types and varieties are classed at 738.2 and 738.3. A specific type or variety is either an including concept, e.g., blue and white transfer ware at 738.27, or has its own number, e.g., majolica at 738.372. Thus, standard subdivisions should not be added to either 738.27 or 738.37. Currently, only the prohibitions about use of either geographic treatment or biography are given. We added the prohibitions about use of the other standard subdivisions.

The note at 738.14 Techniques and procedures of ceramic arts indicates that techniques of making specialized products are classed with the products in 738.4-738.8. At the same time, there are notes at 738.12 Materials and 738.13 Apparatus and equipment indicating that materials, apparatus, and equipment in specific techniques are class in 738.14. This chain of notes indicates that materials, apparatus, and equipment associated with specialized products are also classed in 738.4-738.8. We have moved the note from 738.14 to 738.1.

Goldsmiths

Just like pottery, “goldsmiths” has both a broad and narrow meaning. In Edition 22, there is a class-elsewhere note from the narrow meaning at 739.22092 to the broad meaning at 739.2092, but not vice-versa. We replaced the class-elsewhere note by a Manual-like note that gives both meanings (similar to the Manual-like note for pottery), and we added the Manual-like note at the other end.

Jewelry with little or no metal

Jewelry at 739.27 is a subentry of 739 Art metalwork. Thus, 739.27 is the number for setting materials such as pearl and glass beads in metal. However, some pieces of jewelry involve little or no metal, such as pearl or glass-bead necklaces with only a metal clasp. These pieces are classed with the specific material other than metal. The current scatter see-reference at 739.27 does not make it clear that if there is little or no metal, the type of jewelry is classed with the specific material other than metal.

Polymer clay

Polymer clay is a sculptable material based on the polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a type of plastic. It usually contains no clay minerals, and is only called "clay" because its texture and working properties resemble those of mineral clay. It is sold in craft, hobby, and art stores, and is used by artists, hobbyists, and children. In WorldCat, 291 titles about polymer clay are classed at 745.572. We provided a new entry at 745.5723.

Handicrafts involving objects made of either textile or glass

The centered entry at 745.51-745.58 instructs that specific objects made from specific materials are to be classed in 745.59. At the same time, there are see references to textile handicrafts at 746 and to glass handicrafts in 748. Because see references take preference over class-elsewhere notes, specific objects made from textiles are classed in 746, and specific objects made from glass are classed in 748. The problem is that in Edition 22, there are no references from 745.59 Making specific objects to either 746 or 748. Those references have been added.

Bedclothes vs. Bedclothing

Bedclothing is the heading at 746.460437 and 746.97 and as the example in notation 0434-0438 in add table at 746. However, bedclothes is used as part of the including note at 646.21 Construction of home furnishings. The same term should be used in both the 746 entries and at 646.21. Both Webster’s Third New International Dictionary and Random House Dictionary of the English Language prefer Bedclothes. Thus, Bedclothing was changed to Bedclothes in the 746 entries.

Glass and glassware

Glassware is any article made of glass, which is equivalent to 748 Glass. In WorldCat, there are 687 titles at 748 that have the main heading of Glassware, but 1,312 titles at 748.2 Glassware. In addition to 748.2 having the heading of “Glassware,” a reason for works on glass being classed in 748.2, not 748, is how the LCSHs Glass, Glass art, and Glassware are used. (While neither Glass nor Glassware has a scope note, Glass art has a scope note: Here are entered works on art that is created using glass.) The following table gives the LCSH, where it is used is LCC, and the DDC equivalent:

Glass TA450TP845-TP869

620.144 (Material science)666.1 (Chemical technology)

Glass art NK5100-NK5440 748 (Arts)Glassware TP865-TP868

NK5101-NK5430666.19 (Glass products – chemical technology)748 (Arts)

Thus, a work about glass in the 748 sense will get the LCSH Glassware. For example, the following work published in 1980, Masterpieces of glass : a world history from the Corning Museum of Glass by R. J. Charleston and Joan E. Fisher was assigned the LCSH Glassware – History and the DDC number 748.29, which is now 748.209 History of glassware. The work should have been classed in 748.09 History of glass. In order to prevent this type of misclassification, we have discontinued Glassware from 748.2 to 748.

In Edition 22, there is a class-elsewhere note about “glassmakers” as makers of glassware from 748.092 to 748.2092. With glassware discontinued to 748, the class-elsewhere note is no longer needed and was deleted.

What should be classed at 748.2? The class-here note at 748.2 indicates that blown, cast, decorated, fashioned, molded, and pressed glassware are classed there. We noticed that the heading at 748.5 Stained, painted, leaded, mosaic glass gives various techniques for making glass. This listing of techniques is similar to the listing of techniques currently in the class-here note at 748.2. We decided to give similar headings at 748.2 and 748.5.

14

Page 15: EPC Exhibit 130-31 - National Library of Australia · Web view745.572 745.572 3 Polymer clay 745.593 745.593 8 Scrapbooks 751.426 751.426 4 Acrylic painting techniques by subject

Thus, we changed the heading at 748.2 to: Blown, cast, decorated, fashioned, molded, pressed glass.

We made several other changes to make it clear what should be classed in 748 itself. First, we added a class-elsewhere note at 748.2 overriding the first-of-two rule so that comprehensive works on glass made by the processes given in the headings at 748.2 and 748.3 are classed at 748, not 748.2. Glass is a type of ceramic material. Because “ceramic materials” is listed in the including note at 731.2 Materials [of sculpture], glass sculpture is classed with sculpture in 730, not at 748. We added a see reference for glass sculpture from 748 to 730. Thus, comprehensive works on glass are now classed in 748.

A vast majority of glass articles that are blown, cast, decorated, fashioned, molded, or pressed are various types of glass tableware. It is the practice of the Decimal Classification Division (the Dewey Section of the U.S. General Division as of October 14) to class comprehensive works on tableware in 748.2. We agree with this practice, and have made an explicit provision for comprehensive works on tableware in the class-here note at 784.2.

Tableware currently appears as the heading at 748.83, but must be interpreted in light of the caption at 748.8, “Specific articles.” Thus, only specific articles of glass tableware, e.g., drinking glasses, should be classed at 748.82. To indicate this, we changed the heading to “Specific articles of tableware” and added a reference to tableware in 748.2.

Acrylic painting

There are 530 titles in WorldCat that are classed at 751.426 Acrylic painting. Of the first 100 titles, 20 titles are about how to paint specific subjects. Currently, watercolor painting (751.422), Chinese ink painting (751.4251), and oil painting (751.45) are subdivided by the subject of the painting. We provided a new entry at 751.4264 for acrylic painting techniques by subject. The other painting techniques under 751.4, e.g., tempera and airbrush, do not have literary warrant for subdivision by subject.

“Persons treatment” was changed to “biography” in the footnotes for the following entries: 723-724, 732-753.

At 730.092, 738.092, and 741.092, biography is given in the class-here note. When the heading “Persons treatment” is replaced by “Biography”, biography would appear in both the heading and class-here note. Because “description, critical appraisal” is part of the scope note at notation —092 in Table 1, we moved the “regardless” information to a scope note. In addition, we deleted “description, critical appraisal, biography of [type of person]” from the class-here note at 730.92 and 738.092 and the entire class-here note at 741.092.
