Petrel TIPS&TRICKS from SCME&P SOLUTIONS

Petrel Studio – Part 2

This is the second of two TIPS&TRICKS on the Petrel Studio. The Petrel Studio was introduced in Petrel 2011 and contains many useful features. The following topics are covered in this two part series:

Studio Annotate: Studio Annotate is designed to give you the ability to add content to your Petrel project. This content can include files residing outside of the project. These files can be on your computer, on a company internet or intranet or elsewhere on the web. Links to these files are carried with the project. These files can be shared with other projects via the Reference Project Tool (RPT). Any type of file (sound, document, PDF, video, etc.) can be added. Any type of note (formatted text, embedded picture, hyperlink, URL, etc.) can also be added. The files are connected to a location on an object in a window. For example, display only some or all wells in a 3D window. Zoom in fairly close around them and make them nearly vertical in the window. This allows you to see the well bores which we will use as reference locations.

Any type of Petrel object may be displayed and used. In this example, we are only using well bores.

If the Annotate toolbar isn’t visible, click on View Annotate to make it visible.

On the Annotate toolbar, you can add a note, a file, a voice recording or a URL. The other icons will be explained later in this article. Petrel 2012 has added a few options. The two toolbars look like: This TIPS&TRICKS uses only the Petrel 2012 toolbar below. Files:

To add a file, from the Annotate toolbar, click on the Insert file attachment icon.

1. Click somewhere on one of the well bores. This just marks a reference location for the file and its exact location is usually not critical.

2. A window appears. Navigate to the folder containing the file to attach. Highlight the file name and click Open. The file may be some type of picture (a tif, jpg, etc.), a Word document, a spreadsheet, etc.

3. A marker appears on the well bore at the chosen location. Also, an Annotate folder is created in the Input pane (if it doesn’t already exist). Under this folder, an Attachments folder is created with the file located under this Attachments folder.

4. Note that, like all other Petrel objects, the box in front of the attachment must be checked to see it in the graphics window. After it is displayed, in Select/pick mode, right‐click on the marker and choose Open. You could also have right‐clicked on the object in the Input pane and chosen Open.

5. The picture opens.

Notes:

To insert a note, click on the Insert Note icon on the Annotate toolbar.

1. Click somewhere on a well bore to mark a location. The location is usually not critical.

6. A Note editor appears. Type in some note (like: “The well has no logs”) and click OK.

7. The note will appear in the graphics area and a Notes folder appears under the main Annotate folder in the Input pane. The title of the note is the first few letters of the note text.

8. To display the note, right‐click on either the object in the Input pane or on the marker on the well

bore (must be in Select/pick mode) and select Show. Again, the box in front of the note must be checked to see the marker in the graphics window.

URL:

To insert a link to a URL, click on the Insert URL Attachment icon on the Annotate toolbar.

2. When the Add URL attachment window appears, key in a valid URL. You may also enter a name for the URL. The default name will be the URL itself.

3. The window is marked to show the URL location and a new object is added under the Annotate Attachments folder.

4. In Select/Pick mode, right‐click on the marker on the well and choose Open. Your default web browser opens and the web page is displayed.

Voice Recording:

To insert a voice recording, click on the Insert Voice Recording icon on the Annotate toolbar.

2. A Voice recorder window appears.

3. Click on the Start recording button and start talking into your microphone. When you are

finished, click on the Stop recording button .

4. The recording is placed at the bottom of the Attachments folder as a “.wav” file and located on the picture. To hear the recording, right‐click on the marker and choose Open. Don’t forget to take your computer off “mute”.

Annotate Manager: The Annotate Manager allows you to control all annotations identified with this tool.

1. To access the manager, click the Open annotate manager icon .

2. This brings up the Annotate manager window. The window lists all annotations currently attached to the project.

3. Highlight a line by clicking on the line number to the left. After highlighting, icons at the top of the window become active. (Activation of some of them is dependent on the annotation highlighted.

4. Using these icons, you may:

a. ‐ Open the Settings for the annotation

b. ‐ Turn the selected object on in the current active window.

c. ‐ Show the associated object in the current active window (the object you pinned the annotation to)

d. ‐ Open the attachment

e. ‐ Open the containing folder

f. ‐ Import the selected attachment(s)

g. ‐ Export the selected attachment(s)

h. ‐ Check for “broken” attachments

i. ‐ Re‐link the attachment

j. ‐ Delete the selected attachment(s) from the table

k. ‐ Archive the attachment

5. You may show in the list the active, archived or both active and archived annotations.

6. Using the Object filter, you may filter the attachment list to certain objects that the attachments are linked to or folders containing the objects that the attachments are linked to.

7. Here again, you may check or un‐check the box in front of the attachment to display it in the current active window.

8. You may add as many attachments as you want and, of course, delete them if you no longer want them attached to your project. The links (and notes) are copied along with your project and can be copied to another project using the RPT.

9. Another icon allows you turn on visualization of all attachments if the object they are attached to is visible. This is the same as putting a checkmark in the box in front of each attachment. This icon looks like:

10. The last icon allows you to send an attachment in email, a blog or save it to the clipboard. This icon looks like:

Map Services:

A Map Service allows you to add maps containing possible culture information from a GIS such as ArcGIS. This might keep you from having to find a lot of culture information in Petrel format. Once the Map Service has been generated, this information can be displayed along with objects from your Petrel project. You MUST have an internet connection to get a Map Service.

In this example, we will display the wells, picks and a surface in a graphics window. We are using data from the Gulfaks field located in the North Sea.

To create a Map Service, click on Insert New map service.

1. A New map service window appears.

2. Key in the URL of a map service. We will use: http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/NatGeo_World_Map/MapServer

3. Click on Next

4. Verify the information. You will probably want to change the Constant z‐level. Since this project is around ‐2000 meters, set it to ‐2500.

5. Click on Finish

6. The Map Service is added at the bottom of the Input pane and displayed in your window. Often, you will need to zoom out a long ways to see anything. This Petrel project is located in the middle of the North Sea and has a corresponding CRS. The Map Service looks at the CRS of the project and computes what information to add around the valid area of the CRS.

7. Uncheck the box in front of the Map Service in the Input pane to remove it from the display. 8. There are many Map Services on the internet. At the time this article was written, some other

SUMMATION:

The Petrel Studio is a very powerful addition to the application. It has many different uses and can help you organize and use your data better.
