We understand the ups and downs of living with these often misdiagnosed and misunderstood diseases.

Eosinophilic disorders are occurring with increasing frequency, particularlyamong children. These rare disorders can be difficult to diagnose and manage.

Families and their doctors from around the nation and throughout the worldseek out Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for support.

The Cincinnati Center for Eosinophilic Disorders at Cincinnati Children’s is the only center in the country that brings together such a multidisciplinary teamof allergy/immunology, pathology and gastrointestinal experts to evaluate, treatand study these chronic medical problems in children.

For families dealing with eosinophil-associated disorders, theroad to diagnosis can be frustrating and challenging sincesymptoms masquerade as a number of diseases. But oncediagnosed, symptoms of these disorders can be effectivelymanaged in many cases.

Our TeamThe team of specialists at the Cincinnati Center for EosinophilicDisorders (CCED) has extensive experience with these rare disorders. We have intense interest in eosinophilic disorders, their effects on health, and the impact on individuals and families. Our center is the international leader in caring for patients with these conditions and researching the cure forthese disorders.

Coordinated Care: The Best Treatment ApproachCoordinated care is required to manage these disorders.Various experts that comprise the CCED team gather at thehospital to spend the day examining, testing and treatingpatients, which makes visits more productive for families. Wediagnose the problem, provide medical care, conduct significantresearch designed to understand how and why these disordersoccur, and link patients to the latest treatments.

• Evaluations may include an endoscopy (examination of the interior of an organ), allergy testing (to assess for other associated conditions such as asthma, food allergiesor environmental allergies), and/or a tissue biopsy. (The only way to diagnose an eosinophilic disorder of the gastrointestinal tract is by a tissue sample.)

• A detailed assessment is provided, including recommendations for disease management and treatment.

• Management of the condition occurs through the center and/or in collaboration with the patient’s local physicians.

• Reports are provided to the patient and their local physicians to facilitate coordinated and transitional care.

Your care team will also provide advice on quality of lifeissues, strategies for dealing with school and social eventsand educational materials that families can use with school orcaregivers. We also work closely with several patient-foundedsupport groups.

To make an appointment or for more information, please call:513-636-2233 (CCED) or 1-800-344-2462, ext. 6-2233.

Ongoing Research: A Critical NeedResearchers at the Cincinnati Center forEosinophilic Disorders are worldwideleaders in the field. Our researchinvolves basic, clinical and translationalstudies to determine the reason for the current epidemic of eosinophilic disorders and to develop a cure for the disease.

Because of our growing knowledge andever improving technology, we have anunprecedented ability to make stridesin our understanding of these diseases. We are currently studying compoundsthat might block eosinophil production,as we strive to develop the next andbest treatment for eosinophil-associatedmedical disorders.

Research on these disorders is under-supported by current grant agencies. A quest for a cure is only limited bythis shortage of funds. Your gift canhelp ensure that cures will be developed in the future.

Who Can Benefit?Patients who need diagnosis and require testing, evaluation, comprehensive treatment and information find help at theCCED. The center also helps patients who have already beendiagnosed with an eosinophilic disease and are searching forcoordinated care or new therapies provided by the center.

Patients and their families can benefit from the following services:• Consultation, evaluation and individual, comprehensive

care programs• Access to the newest advancements in treatment• Diagnostic laboratory services• Cutting-edge research related to eosinophil-associated

disorders

What to ExpectYour initial evaluation may take three to four days, dependingon the needs of the patient. Our office will facilitate gatheringmedical history and information, determine the needed specialists for your care and schedule the evaluations.

Help Is Available from a World-RenownedTreatment and Research Center

The CCED team includes specialists in:• Allergy and

Immunology • Pathology• Gastroenterology• Nutrition• Respiratory• Psychology• Radiology

The expertise ofother specialists is drawn upon, according to the individual needs of each patient.

Eosinophilic disorders occur wheneosinophils, a type of white bloodcell, are found in above-normalamounts in various parts of the body.

When the body wants to attack a substance, such as an allergy-triggeringfood or airborne allergen, eosinophilsrespond by moving into the area andreleasing a variety of toxins. However, when the body produces too manyeosinophils, they can cause chronic

inflammation, resulting in tissue damage.

These rare diseases are diagnosedaccording to where the elevated levels of eosinophils are found:Eosinophilic esophagitis (esophagus)Eosinophilic gastritis (stomach)Eosinophilic enteritis (small intestine) Eosinophilic colitis (large intestine)Hypereosinophilic syndrome (bloodand any organ)

What Is an Eosinophilic Disorder?

A gastroenterologist will manage thepatient’s treatment, with support fromother medical team members.

A pathologist will study the tissue sample taken during the patient’s biopsyand make a diagnosis.

An allergist will evaluate whether thepatient has an allergic or non-allergic formof disease in order to guide treatment.

While there is no cure for eosinophilic disorders, effective treatments are coming.

Researchers at CincinnatiChildren’s are leading national efforts to helpensure that cures will be developed in the future.
