What we do: EOSDIS Data & Services

NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) is composed of a series of satellites, scientific research, and a data collection and management system known as EOS Data and Information System (EOSDIS).

EOSDIS has eight discipline-specific Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs), and three cooperating or related data centers that process, manage, document, archive, and distribute a variety of Earth system science data. These data centers are united in a common mission: to archive Earth science data, to distribute the data to the research community, and to support the data. The data centers provide a wide variety of data related services (e.g.on-demand data products, subsetting ,visualization and data manipulation tools, etc.) to their data users via their User Services Offices (USOs). The USO is each data center’s interface to the public.

About our data: Some statistics

– Presently, eight EOSDIS data centers and three related data providers support the daily production of over 3 terabytes of interdisciplinary Earth system science data from either EOS missions (e.g., Terra, Aqua, Aura, ICESat, Jason, QuikSCAT, SORCE), pre-EOS missions(e.g., SeaWiFS, TOMS-EP, TRMM, UARS), other Earth system science data and NASA funded field campaigns (e.g.,BOREAS, FIFE, SAFARI) and human dimensions derived data (e.g., Gridded Population of the World, Global Urban-Rural Mapping Project (GRUMP)

– In FY 2006 alone, over 65 million Earth system science data products, over 1086TB (~3 TB daily) of data and information about NASA missions, instruments and data products, was disseminated to over three million distinct users within the science, government, industry, education, and policy maker communities around the world.

– These data are collected by approximately 70 instruments onboard more than 43 satellite and aircraft platforms.

About our data- some basics

– Earth system science data range from airborne sensor data, to remotely sensed Earth Observing data to validation data sets

– Spatial and temporal resolutions can and do vary by platform, sensor and data product

– Most of the data is in either hdf or hdf-eos format– Online access to EOSDIS data available through

multiple search and order interfaces– Tools for processing and translating data into GIS

formats are available – Each User Services Office has experts available to

you for data product, data information and data tools inquiries

General types of data products

• EOSDIS data products are either standard data products or special data products

• If they are standard:– Generated as part of a research investigation using EOS data– Recognized to have wide research utility– Generated routinely– Produced for spatially and/or temporally extensive sets of data– Produced at the DAACs or by Science Investigator-led

Processing Systems(SIPs).

Our data: In a nutshell

• Most of the products are considered standard data products

• Data are processed at various levels ranging from Level 0 to Level 4

• Level 0 products are raw data at full instrument resolution

• At higher levels, data are converted into more useful parameters and formats.

• All EOS instruments must have Level 1 SDPs. Most have products at Levels 2 and 3

Our data: In a nutshell

• If they are special:– Generated as part of a research investigation using

EOS data– Produced for a limited region or time period– Not accepted as standard by the EOS Investigators

Working Group(IWG) and NASA HQ.– Referred to as “special data products” to distinguish

them from other non-standard products such as ancillary data sets

– Normally generated at the investigators’ Scientific Computing Facilities(SCFs).

Let us help you use your data

NASA’s EOSDIS Data Centers provide tools for image processing andanalysis,and for searching and subsetting data. These tools have been created by the Data Centers, NASA support staff, or external software developers.

HDF-EOS Tools-Download tools to read, visualize, and analyze data-Tools designed for data in HDF and HDF-EOS formats

Subsetting and Reprojection Tools -Product-specific data subsetting and reprojection available -Subsetting by spatial coverage, temporal coverage, and data-specific variables

Geographical Information System (GIS) Capabilities-Data Centers offer data and tools for utilizing GIS functionality-Some products are available as shapefiles and other standard GIS formats

• The data centers have individual online systems that allow them to provide unique services for users of a particular type of data. The center specific systems emphasize data products, services, and data-handling tools unique to the data center.

• Member data centers are distinguished from one another by their specific Earth science discipline

How to find and get your data

• EOS Data Gateway

– Primary access point to EOSDIS and other ESE data holdings archived at the nine data centers of the DAAC Alliance

– Search-and-order tool allows users, including those without specific knowledge of the data to:

• Search science data holdings(variety of search methods available-[e.g.geographical, parameter, temporal,etc.])

• Global Change Master Directory(GCMD)– A comprehensive database of interdisciplinary Earth science

data and services that provide vital information to help determine whether the data or service meets the user’s needs.

• Descriptions include information such as location of data or service associated investigators and other contacts,spatial and temporal coverage of the data, resolution of the data, and links to the actual data or service

• The GCMD database contains more than 13,500 Earth science data set descriptions, and more than 750 Earth science services(e.g. software, analytical tools,educational resources, etc.)

Benefits of GCMD

• Can be searched for EOSDIS and other ESE data sets by using free text or an extensive set of keywords covering all areas of Earth science research including the atmosphere, biosphere,hydrosphere and oceans, snow and ice, geoscience, paleoclimatology, land surface and human dimension of global change.

Features of GCMD

• Data sets can be searched by platform, spacecraft, instrument, data center, geographic location,or project

• If a dataset exists in the EDG,a special link will connect the user directly from the description to the EDG so that the data can be browsed or ordered.

• Specialized list of Earth science related services are searchable– Examples range from specialized tools for browsing,manipulating,

and visualizing EOS data products to Earth science educational products and environmental hazard advisory services
