Kioni had acquired his shop, yes he had. He was, in fact, in themiddle of trying to create a set of everlasting torches withwhich to light the place with. So far, he was having very, verylittle luck. In fact, it was as though magic simply didn't workhere! He'd tried casting the spell seven or eight times andhadn't gotten so much as a spark or a bit of heat. It was veryaggravating, to say the least.

Finally, he decided to switch tactics. Normally, he would set aneverlasting torch on an existing feature in the wall--there wereseveral torch brackets already present, so he was trying tosimply light those up. Seeing as that wasn't working, however,he decided to try his luck with some of the river stones he hadcollected to sculpt with. He shaped a large lump of clay into theshape needed to fit securely within the torch brackets and thenwent to one of the workbenches, on which sat several riverstones he had gathered just for stone sculpting (though hehadn't intended them for this particular purpose).

To his relief, "Meishel," and a touch of the clay mold and oneof the river stones appeared to melt and reform in the sameshape as the clay. Or...all of them. Every single stone on theworkbench reformed. Kioni cursed in kobold under his breath. But at least he had enough to fill all the holders now!

He scooped up one of the newly-shaped stones and scrambledup on a bench he'd placed next to one of the torch sconces anddeposited the stone. Then, he started to cast the spell to turn itinto an everlasting light source.

"Enzuneadin!" For a long moment, nothing happened."Enzuneadin! ENZUNEADIN!" Still nothing. Muttering andcursing, Kioni took a half step back forward and slapped at thestone, as though to knock it from the holder.

No one on Needle Street could have missed the explosion or thesubsequent bits of flame that dotted the street in front of theworkshop. Or the petulant wailing of the very frightened (butonly slightly-charred) mage, who had managed to blink out ontothe roof of the building as the explosion rocked the foundations. After the sounds of smoldering died down a bit (which didn'ttake long: the shop was made of stone and there really wasn'tmuch to burn in the workshop yet except a few shelves and bitsof furniture), the dog-like kobold teleported back inside, stillprotesting loudly.

He began trying to sweep up things that had ricocheted aroundthe room and reorganize them. Due to the thick smoke lingeringin the room (which was lingering well over a foot over hisdiminutive stature), he didn't notice at first that the stone was

glowing a bright and "healthy" orange-yellow.

It was weird that one could end up in a completely new place...

And that she could find her way from forest, to plains, to town.It was in the town that Karina now wandered, her humanoid

form moving with ease. She watched the surrounding area withinterest, wanting to learn everything about the place she could.

However, as fate would have it, a loud explosion caused a

moment of fear. It was in that moment that the humanoid wasreplaced by a silver fox, the creature searching for what had

caused the noise... And easily spotted the areas of fire on

Needle Street.

-What happened?- she questioned herself before she discovered

the shop where the problem had taken place. Cautiously sheentered, spotting the odd creature and his work... As well as

noting the smell that filled the air. A snort came from her as sheshook her head, it smelled aweful!

Kioni had a keen sense of smell, although it wasn't perhaps askeen as it could have been, particularly right this instant. He

had become somewhat immune to the smell of exploding...well,explosions. He frequently blew things up. And normally, his

hearing was pretty sharp, too; however, being in personalproximity to an explosion tends to make one a bit deaf, if only

temporarily. So Kioni had no idea that he had a visitor until heturned around and...

"EEEEE!" And in true Kioni fashion, *bamph* Not that he

blinked too far, just up on top of a shelf that had been protectedfrom the explosion by a stone wall. A higher vantage point made

him feel safer; unfortunately, it also put him on the far side of the room from his visitor, who wasn't exactly large, and his

sight had never been particularly good. Now he squinted towardthe...was that a wustenuck?...in his shop.

He hopped down from his perch, intent on shooing the creature

out the door before he was able to discern the color of thewustenuck's fur: silver. A closer examination revealed that the

creature, while it looked like a wustenuck, was larger overall, with a bushier tail and longer muzzle, but smaller ears and

eyes. The fur was also thicker and more luxurious than thewusteni he was used to.

Wusteni fur was rare and hard to acquire, but it was supposed

to be good for various potions (especially luck potions) and the

metallic colors were the best. He shifted direction to movearound the creature and toward the door so that he could shut it

in (giving him a better chance of catching the wustenuck) whenhe realized he didn't have a door any more. Blasted explosion.

He turned and started edging over toward the wustenuck. His

plan was to get it calm enough that he could blink and grab it

(or at least grab some fur). It was considered extremely badluck to kill wusteni, but of course, the fox-that-wasn't wouldn'tknow that...

"C'mere little one, Kioni won't hurt you, Kioni just wants to look

at your fur..." Similar rapid but soft platitudes continued to spewfrom his muzzle as he edged slowly toward the fox. He held his

paw out and crouched down a bit as he moved.

Of course, she was a tad on the weary side, and his blinking to

a new location only alerted her to magics. Yet, she kept up herbold face as she spotted things in their right and proper order..

minus the explosion part. With ease she watched the strangecreature as he studied her... and was he thinking to catch a

shifter? Stupid creature.

It was at that point she decided to speak with him, and beforehe could get within five feet of her, the form of a woman

replaced that of the silver fox.

"Um... what exactly are you doing asking about my fur?" sheasked him.

Not frightening, not threatening, heeerrrre little foxy..."AAAIIIIEEEE!!!" *bamph*

Kioni's introductions almost always started out something along

those lines. Some people called him "E-bamph" because thatwas the first impression he made on them. Of course, they

never say it to his face because he'd get all confused and startasking a bunch of questions and then get depressed if he found

out WHY they called him that. And a depressed Kioni makes forhuge guilt trips.

It would no doubt take the fox-human a moment to figure out

WHERE he'd blinked to: up in the rafters, where he commencedchittering at her in his native kobold tongue. Again, all part of

Kioni's self-induced introductions.

After several minutes of staring at the woman from over her

head, his nattering died down and he realized he needed to getdown somehow. With another *bamph*, the kobold reappeared,

this time back toward where he was when she'd first walked in--leaving the way between the woman and the (now-

disintegrated) door wide open. He got up his nerve to answerher question.

"Wustenuck fur is very valuable. It is especially good for certainspells..." As he said this, he was trying to move around her tosee if she had any fur on parts of her that he hadn't seen yet,

where he could still GET the fur. "And silver is such a rare color."

He also felt some sort of stir, something he'd never felt before.Since it was unfamiliar to him, he ignored it (for the time

being). Then it really dawned on him that he was talking to asentient creature, something like a lycan, more or less, and he

couldn't just take her fur. "Can I please please PLEASE havesome of your fur?" Only Kioni could beg like that...

Karina blinked when the strange creature vanished. Though itdidn't take her long to find him in the rafters. He was strange,

and she couldn't figure out just what he was doing.

When finally he reappeared and answered her question shelooked confused. She was a silver fox... Not a westawhatever...

Though she didn't say anything to him until he asked for someof her fur.

"Why would you want the fur of a silver fox?" She asked, still

confused.

Kioni whined a bit despite being accustomed to repeating

himself (many people had problems understanding his rapidspeech). "Fox? Fox? What's a fox? Is that what you were when

you came in? You looked a lot like a wustenuck, but not exactlythe same. I haven't seen or heard any wusteni since I got here. I

need fur for spells, yes, spells. And trinkets and amulets andthings that we mages produce, and since all of my materials got

left behind, I need new ones and haven't been able to find any."

Quite a long speech for the little fellow, really. But was hedone? Oh, no. He'd had a thought. "But then, you're not really a

wustenuck, are you? You're more like a lycan. I don't know whatthat would do to your fur. But I'd really like to find out. I like

experiments!" He'd never used lycan fur in any experimentsbefore, so he really had no idea what it would do. Typically, the

use of sentient creatures' body parts had been frowned upon,

except in the cases of doing magery that was specific to oneperson or group. Kioni had never been fond of the rule because

an individual's body parts could be so much more powerful, buthe'd carefully kept it a secret; however, there were no captains

to inspect him here and he'd heard of no prohibition.

Unlike his smaller little jumbled together sentences, Karina

didn't know what to make of the larger rant. The long mess of garbled words was lost almost right away and she frowned.

"Huh?" she asked him, cocking her head to the side. Clearly hedidn't expect her to understand THAT much jumbled together! It

was all, one really long word and he sounded rather confusing.

Nevermind that she had already admitted to not knowing what awustenuck was... so why would that change.

With his slightly smaller speech, she didn't get anymoreunderstanding from it, only picking up the word lycan. She'd

never run across any when she was back home, but she hadheard the humans whisper about it when she was rescuing her

brother. Apparently they were creatures that didn't do well withlogic... or at least that's what the human's said. She snorted at

the thought, but still gave no logical answer other than a veryconfused look.

Kioni growled, frustrated by the lack of an answer and theconfused expression on her f ace. He'd learned to read f acial

expressions around Kythen, whose expressions were extremelydifficult to read. By comparison, her expressions were quite

open.

Forcing himself to slow his speech down, he tried again.Although still rapid, there was more spacing between each word.

"What you call 'fox' we called wustenuck. But as a fox, youlooked slightly different from a wustenuck. Do all fox shapeshift

like lycans do? I still would like some of your fur. Where I'mfrom, we mages use wusteni fur for spells and other things.

Although, since you shapeshift, it might be more like using lycanfur, which I've never used in any spells before. But I would like to

experiment with it if you'd let me!"

The little creature was fidgeting and staring up at the woman, itching to get his hands on some of her fur. The fact that he

didn't have a door on his shop, visible out of the corner of hiseye, was starting to bother him. Any minute now, he might get

distracted by something, but at the moment, his sole focus wason her and his desire for some of her fur.
