2.5 Base materials/Ancillary materials The Declaration refers to the following composition of IGP-HWFclassic 5903 S-type powder coating:

Binding agents (resin and hardener) 60–75% Pigments (coloured/effect pigments) 0– 5% Titanium dioxide 0–25.5% Extender 5–20% Additives 3–3.6%

All formula ingredients are pre-registered in accordance with Directive (EC) No. 1907/2006 (/REACH/) and correspond with their designated use. Substances of very high concern (SVHC), last revised 15.01.2019, are not used.

The formula also meets the requirements of EC Directive 2011/65/EU (/RoHS 2011/65/EU/).

The product / At least one partial product contains other CMR substances in categories 1A or 1B which are not on the candidate list, exceeding 0.1 percentage by mass in at least one partial product: no

Biocide products were added to this construction product or it has been treated with biocide products (this then concerns a treated product as defined by the (EU) Ordinance on Biocide Products No. 528/2012): no

2.6 ManufacturePowder coatings are produced in a certain order: weighing the individual components, mixing (pre-mixing), extruding (plasticisation and homogenisation), grinding, sieving and filling. The production levels are generally two- or three-stage.

Weighing is followed by the mixing process which homogenises the mixture. Then the substance mixture of raw materials is ready for extrusion – a process which uses shearing forces to achieve intensive homogenisation (dispersion) of the raw materials. After extrusion, the smelt (extrudate) leaks out, is cooled and rolled out. Then the solidified mass is crushed into chips by a shredder which are then ground to their final powder processing form and then packed.

2.7 Environment and health during manufacturing

Certification of the environmental management system in accordance with /ISO 14001/ of IGP Pulvertechnik AG guarantees environmentally-friendly manufacturing and prudent handling of all resources, e.g. the closed cooling circuit of the production plants, thermal recovery from waste production heat and air, as well as giving preference to suppliers which are near the production facility.

As the production process is largely automated, contact by employees with the raw materials and preliminary products used is minimised. The requisite personal protective equipment is also made available.

2.8 Product processing/InstallationIGP-HWFclassic 5903 S-type must be exclusively processed using “Korona” electrostatic plants typically available on the market.

Guidelines to be considered: VDE specifications in accordance with /VDE 0745/ and /VDMA standard sheet 24371-1/.

Powder coatings do not require any solvents for dispersion nor do they discharge any volatile components after forming a film. The overspray can be extracted and reused using the corresponding equipment.

2.9 PackagingThe powder coatings are packed in PE foil and cardboard and transported on wooden pallets. Packaging materials are recyclable and should be directed to a recycling system. The wooden pallets can be reused.

2.10 Condition of useThe powder starting material is crosslinked via the link between the polymer chains during the curing process (“hardening”) to form a smooth duro-plastic film. The ensuing surface is insoluble in water and irreversibly hardened.

No solid or gaseous components come to the surface during use (no blooming, no outgassing). At most, volatile substances in the form of short invisible residual molecules can escape but are below the detection limit.

The protection duration and useful life are dependent on the facade lifetime. Any changes in colour and gloss comply with the tolerance band of the relevant quality associations and are certified by the following material approvals:

/Qualicoat/, "Class 2" /GSB INternational/, "Class Master" /AAMA 2604/ test report

2.11 Environment and health during useWhen IGP-HWFclassic 5903 S-type is processed as designated and taking consideration of the applicable safety information, no impacts to health or harmful environmental influences can be anticipated.

2.12 Reference service lifeWhen surfaces coated with IGP-HWFclassic 5903 S-type are cared for appropriately, the service life corresponds with the useful life of the building. Weather-induced changes in colour and gloss do not impair the product’s protective effect.

Material aging occurs primarily through the effect of UV radiation and the influences of moisture. Both influences can lead to changes in colour and gloss which are within the tolerance framework of the GSB and Qualicoat quality associations but paint delamination should not occur. High concentrations of highly-reactive atmospheric gases such as industrial gases or chlorides – e.g. caused by de-icing salt – can lead to irreversible impacts in the protective effect of the paint film through to infiltration and delamination.

2.13 Extraordinary effects

FirePowder-coated construction products are classified as “non-homogeneous building products”. By definition, powder coatings which are regarded as decorative coatings for metallic surfaces are non-substantial components of a construction and are therefore not building products; they can however be tested like a building product in accordance with /EN 13501-1/.

IGP-HWFclassic 5903 S-type is classified and was tested by the Materialprüfanstalt MPA Braunschweig in compliance with the reaction-to-fire process as per /EN 13501-1/. On the basis of the tests outlined above, the following general technical approvals were awarded by the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik DIBt with the approval number /No. Z-56.428-1023/ dated 11 December 2018 for the IGP powder-coated systems

referred to above on one or both sides of coated metal surfaces or metal profiles with all-round coatings.

The powder-coating system referred to above is classified as a non-ignitable building material in accordance with /EN 13501-1/: class A1 or class A2-s1, d0, depending on the product range and coating thickness. Evidence of approval is provided on the respective product technical data sheet. Building material className ValueBuilding material class A1-A2 1 - 2Burning droplets d0Smoke gas development S1 WaterFully-crosslinked films of IGP-HWFclassic 5903 S-type are not attacked by water. There is no hazard for water through contact with powder-coated surfaces, e.g. in the event of flooding.

Mechanical destructionIGP-HWFclassic 5903 S-type powder-coated films display a significantly increased degree of scratch resistance to multilinear scratches and increased resistance to abrasive stress. Mechanical flexibility is displayed in accordance with /GSB/ and /Qualicoat/ requirements.

2.14 Re-use phaseIGP HWFclassic 5903 S-type coatings can be removed chemically or thermally from the substrate within the framework of metal recovery and then disposed of thermally. Paint sludge arising during chemical removal is also suitable for incineration.

2.15 DisposalWaste code in accordance with the European waste directory for powder coatings: /EWC/, some waste derived from coating powder, residual powder and filter waste fine powder (which has not been applied) is used for the manufacture of composite materials.

Incineration within the framework of energy recovery for cement plants has also been established.

3.2 System boundaryType of EPD: Cradle to Grave – with options.

The product stage of the powder coating and disposal thereof is calculated in terms of its LCA in this Declaration. This LCA comprises the provision of raw materials (Module A1), transport to the production facility (Module A2) and the powder coating manufacturing processes, including packaging (Module A3). At the end of life, the product is transported to the disposal plant (C2) where it is disposed of (C4).

Application of the powder coating is outside the system boundary of this EPD.

3.3 Estimates and assumptionsData sets on the upstream chains associated with manufacturing basic materials are taken from the /GaBi data base/. Materials for which there are no inventories available are approximated with data sets of similar chemicals or estimated by merging available data sets.

3.4 Cut-off criteriaAll data from the operating data survey was taken into consideration, i.e. all starting materials used according to the formula. Expenditure associated with transport is included in the calculations for all materials.

The LCA calculation considers the production waste incurred directly during production, the requisite electrical and thermal energy, and the packaging materials.

Accordingly, all material and energy flows are largely considered with a share of less than one per cent; exceptions: Big Bags (packaging material) and sludge during the manufacturing process each account for a share of <1%. Sludge is incurred while cleaning the containers.

3.5 Background data/GaBi 9/ – the software system for comprehensive analysis developed by thinkstep AG – was used for modelling the life cycle of the product under review.

3.6 Data qualityThe data quality can be regarded as good. The primary data was collated in full taking consideration of all relevant flows. The background data was taken from the /GaBi 2019/ data bases. The data bases were last updated in 2019.

3.7 Period under reviewThe primary data is representative of the period under review in 2018.

3.8 AllocationPrimary dataThe production process does not produce any by-products. Accordingly, no allocation is integrated in the Life Cycle Assessment. Total production comprises other products as well as the product declared here. In collating data, the individual values for thermal and electric energy as well as for auxiliary materials and packaging were related to the products to be declared and taking consideration of the declared unit in kg. The volumes of raw materials for each individual product in the goods group were measured continuously. Credits from thermal utilisation of the production waste were allocated for the product stage. Credited thermal energy is offset within the product stage.

Background dataInformation on the individual data sets is documented at http://www.gabi-software.com/international/support/gabi/.

3.9 ComparabilityBasically, a comparison or an evaluation of EPD data is only possible if all the data sets to be compared were created according to EN 15804 and the building context, respectively the product-specific characteristics of performance, are taken into account.

The used background database has to be mentioned. /GaBi 9/ software was used to calculate the LCA.

6. LCA: Interpretation

The loads during the life cycle are primarily caused by the upstream chains associated with the raw materials used in powder coatings. They account for a share of more than 50% in all impact categories. With except of the abiotic depletion potential (elementary) impact category, the binder and titanium dioxide pigment

preliminary products are responsible for more than 80% of the environmental impacts in Module A1 and therefore of relevance. The abiotic depletion potential (elementary) impact category is dominated by the additives.

7. Requisite evidence

IGP-HWFclassic 5903 is used for powder-coating facade elements and window profiles, primarily made of aluminium. Building products powder-coated with IGP-HWFclassic 5903 are primarily used outside the

building. But window profiles also have contact with interiors. There are no statutory regulations concerning evidence of VOC emissions for use in indoor applications.
