Knowledge and Understanding The course would enable the students to be able to: - Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the concepts and principles of EIA - Have practical hands on experience of both conducting an EIA and reviewing an EIS - Understand how EIA/SEA contributes to environmental policy formulation, resource and land use planning - Appreciate the legal context of sound EIA practice - Understand the status of EIA practice in Sudan and prospects of improving the process.

COURSE AIMS•To provide an introduction to the concept of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Impact Assessment (SEA)•To examine key procedures, methods and techniques and their applications in EIA process•To examine the use of EIA as a practical planning tool and aid to rational decision making •To highlight the history, current status and future prospect of the practice of EIA and SEA in Sudan

COURSE CONTENT• Introduction•Salient features and benefits of conducting EIA•Screening, Scoping processes in EIA•Stakeholder participation in EIA•Types of Impacts•Methods used to structure and organize EIA (Checklists, matrices, networks, etc)•Mitigation of Environmental Impacts•Environmental Mangement Plan•Structure of EIS•Reviewing of EIS•Strategic Impact Assessment•EIA in Sudan
TEACHING METHODS
The course is based on lectures, seminars and papers prepared by the students.
Project work includes both desk studies, practical work and simulation/role play exercises.
