Denounce presented by the Government of
Costa Rica to uphold the Ramsar Convention
In response to the environmental damage on
the Northeast Caribbean Wetland
The patrol conducted on 10/22/2010 by the guard of the
Wildlife Refuge of “Barra del Colorado” demonstrated:
1. Sediments produced by the dredging operations carried out by the
Government of Nicaragua, have been deposited in the wetland
2. An indiscriminate deforestation and elimination of the understory,
affecting the primary forest in an area of 5.75 hectares (197 felled
trees), altering the equilibrium state of the wetland.
3. Possible construction of an artificial Canal between the San Juan
River, the Portillos Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea, attempts against
the ecosystem of the entire area.
Northeast Caribbean Wetland, was incorporated in the
list of the Convention on Wetlands of International
Importance, called the Ramsar Convention,
on March 20, 1996
