by Osa HaleIn 1954, the film Seven Brides for Seven

Brothers entertained audiences with its high-energy musical routines and fun, family-friendly story, scoring an Oscar nomination along the way. This spring, the Lyric Light Opera will be bringing the singing, dancing love story to audiences in western Washington. The story begins with Adam, a

confident backwoodsman and Milly, a sassy city girl, who marry after falling in love at first sight. From there, the plot continues to thicken and the cast dances up a frenzy as Milly returns to Adams mountain home and meets his six rowdy brothers. What ensues is an action-packed tale of love, kidnapping, brawls and pranks.General Director Brenda Mueller said

she waited to put on the production until she knew she had a cast that could do it justice. Between talented performers and strong dance numbers, Mueller said the show will be a rambunctious delight.Casting was no easy feat. This show

requires 18 triple threats (6 brothers, 6 suitors and 6 brides) plus two very strong and capable leads, Mueller said. We have hired one of the best choreographers in the Seattle area Daniel Cruz. He has spent dozens of hours on the high powered dancing.Cayman Ilika and Matthew Posner, two

young and talented performers, are playing Milly and Adam Pontipee, the leading couple. Ilika has been seen in other productions by the Lyric Light Opera, playing roles such as Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and Maria Reiner in The Sound of Music. She also recently performed in a solo concert put on by Marvin Hamlisch, the writer of the well-known musical Annie, Mueller said. Posner, who acted opposite of Ilika in The Sound of Music, also has extensive acting experience, including several roles with 5th Avenue Theatre and Village Theatre.

Both have worked with me before, Mueller said. They are top talent and wonderful warm people. They will bring the roles of Milly and Adam Pontipee to life on the stage. The show has much more to offer than

its gifted leads. Sets are being built by the Utah Festival Opera, and the bright costumes paired with the high-spirited music will make the stage come alive before the dancing even begins, Mueller said.Costumes will be colorful and eye-

catching and music will be captivating and toe-tapping with an on-stage banjo, fiddle and accordion just to name a few, she said, But the capper will be the magnificent dance numbers. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers will

be playing at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon the second, third, and fourth weekends in March (March 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24), with Friday & Saturday shows at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday shows at 2:00 p.m. The production will be performed at Kirkland Performance Center in Kirkland throughout April (April 6, 7, 12, 19, 20, 27 and 28) with all shows at 7:30 p.m. save for one 2:00 p.m. show on the 7th.Tickets are available through the box

office at each venue or through the Lyric Light Operas website (www.lyriclightopera.org). Brenda Mueller will be sending out special offers over email. Mueller can be contacted at [email protected]. Tickets range from $19 to $45. Group discounts are available. Fun for all ages, the show is going to

be a musical delight, Mueller said.Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is the

perfect feel-good family show, Mueller said. [Its] a must see show for anyone of any age who is interested in enjoying an energizing feel-good love story musical of the highest quality that will leave you singing and tapping your toes for a long, long time!

Christopher Key Hits 250by Joanna NesbitEntertainment News Northwest readers

may not be aware, but ENNW staffer Christopher Key recently completed his

250th entertainment review for the magazine on February 8. The reviews which, to date, have earned seven Washington State Press Association awards, appear regularly on the ENNW blog at www.ennw.info and offer readers a comprehensive look at whats playing in the region.

Key began providing reviews in September 2008. His original vision was to review theatre productions, for which he has the most experience, but it seems to have expanded far beyond that vision and I couldnt be more delighted, he says. Hes reviewed everything from stage productions to restaurants to rides in WWII planes. Along the way, hes learned about opera, ballet, music, and many other subjects. The purpose of the reviews is not to

critique but to support the performing arts in the area. Key has been criticized by readers for his relentlessly positive reviews, but, he says, regular readers have learned to read between the lines and usually understand when Im less than pleased with a performance. That said, he does hold professional groups, such as Vancouvers Bard on the Beach, to a higher standard and isnt afraid to say so. Key has been involved in theater for

more than 60 years and since moving to Bellingham in 1999, he has performed in many local productions (which he doesnt review himself). He is the artistic director of Free Key Productions, a semi-professional theater production company he formed in 2012. The blog is a labor of love and often

keeps Key awake until the wee hours to get a review posted before a show opens. Lets offer a rousing THANK YOU to Key for his loyal support of the arts community. To learn more about Key and his work, visit www.freekeyproductions.com or read his reviews at www.ennw.info.

Free Watercolor Demo at Studio UFO Trish Harding paints in watercolor with a technique that she calls flushing. In the beginning of the painting her surface is wet which allows the pigment to be applied with soft wet edges. As the painting comes to fruition the paper surface gets drier and edges get harder. This technique helps the artist to free up

the way that he/she applies the watercolor and loosens up the painting! Please join Trish for this free watercolor demo at Studio UFO on Sun., March 10, 11am-1pm. Refreshments

will be served. Info: 319-6115, email [email protected] or visit www.studioufo.net. Bay Street Village, 301 W. Holly St., Suite M-4, Bellingham.

Family Planning and Other Funny Storiesby Joanna NesbitKeep your eyes open on March 30 and

31 and you may see actors and filmmakers at work in Bellingham. Local filmmaker Sue Mattson and her camera crew will be shooting the first episode of her TV pilot Family Planning and Other Funny Stories, a comedy series about a middle-aged woman looking for love in the digital age, a sort of Sex in the City meets Modern Family, says Mattson. Mattson is a writer,

director, and producer, and says this projects inspiration came from a conversation. The original idea for the story stemmed from a conversation I had with my oldest daughter. She told me I should date everyone and stop being so picky. I thought this was a great idea for a story. Once the pilot is finished, Mattson will shop it around to TV networks and enter it into film festivals. Her immediate goal is to produce a

quality comedy show and pay her actors and crew, even though theyve volunteered their time. But bigger than that, she wants to make a 6-episode series that garners enough attention to put Bellingham on the map as a location for filmmakers. Capturing the attention of outside filmmakers will create opportunities for local filmmakers and actors, she says, as well as bring in potential investors to fund projects. Family Planning features local and

regional comedy actors, including Bellinghamsters Lorraine Wilde and Autumn Koplin, and Seattle actors Michael Mitchell (originally from Bellingham), Conrad Wrobel, and Bill McQuaide.Mattson is also looking for extras for

the pilot episode. She needs adults and kids (aged 4-8) for an outdoor soccer scene, and adults for an indoor karaoke scene. If interested, contact her at [email protected]. Part of making a film is building a fan

base to attract financing. To learn more and to see a promotional-length clip, visit http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/301635?c=home, where you can also make a donation to help fund the project.

Bellingham freelancer Joanna Nesbit has been writing for ENNW since 2005. She loves learning new stuff about her town. Her work has also appeared in FamilyFun, Parenting, Northwest Travel, and Washington State Visitors Guide. Learn more at www.joannanesbit.com.
