have chosen to worship here today. Let’s give God all glory and praise.

First-Time guests, we invite you to look through the “Welcome to Messiah”

Once we enter God’s House, we pray that our hearts are changed, and that His

perspective becomes ours; that we release the cares of this world, and bask in the

beauty of His holiness; that we give Him whatever burdens our heart, and find

the Spirit’s peace that passes all human understanding; that we learn more about

Jesus through His Word, and the joy that comes from a closer walk with the Lord.

If music is being played, we invite you to open the Bible in front of you, and focus

on His Word, or spend time in quiet prayer.

If a song is being sung, words are provided on the screens at the front of the

sanctuary. We invite you to sing along, or meditate on the song’s message.

O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You;

my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory.

Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.

So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:1-4

Luther's Morning Prayer

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have

kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this

day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into

Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel

be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

THE PRELUDE

THE GREETING THE OPENING HYMN “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” LSB 793

THE INVOCATION

P: We celebrate today in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the

Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

THE CONFESSION OF SINS P: Let us confess our sins unto God and implore His forgiveness for the sake

of His Son, Jesus Christ.

C: O God our Father, we have sinned against You in thought, word, and

deed. We have transgressed Your law and have brought injury to

others. We have not always shown forth our faith in every aspect of

our lives. We sincerely repent of our sins. Have mercy on us and hear

“Come to the table.” In our daily experiences, there is no invitation that is more readily received and fully appreciated. To be at the table is to be assured of nourishment and refreshment. In Psalm 23, we are told of a table that is prepared under challenging circumstances. Yet, even there, the cup of God’s blessing overflows. Our gathering for worship and our coming to the Table of the Lord is a weekly experience of overflowing blessing filled with signs of God’s gracious presence. We rejoice that we are invited to His amazing table! P=Pastor C=Congregation In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9; Rom. 3:23)

this, our confession, O Lord. Grant us Your grace and forgiveness in

Jesus Christ. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit within us, lead us to amend our sinful lives that each day we grow in righteousness

and godly living to the glory of Your holy name.

P: The Lord hears our pleas and accepts our prayers. To each of us our Lord

promises forgiveness, life, and salvation. As a called and ordained servant

of Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the

Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Almighty and eternal God, You have called us in Christ to live as those

who are joyfully assured of Your forgiveness and care. Grant us a full

sense of being a community gathered together in Your love as we await

the company of saints and angels in Your eternal kingdom. This we ask

for the sake of Jesus, our Savior and our King. C: Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 25:6–9 6On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of

rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged

wine well refined. 7And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering

that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. 8He

will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all

the earth, for the Lord has spoken. 9It will be said on that day, “Behold,

this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is

the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his

salvation.”

THE EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 4:4–9 4Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6do not be

anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication

with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the

peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts

and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8Finally, brothers, whatever is true,

whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is

lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is

anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things,

and the God of peace will be with you.

The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) In the Collect, The pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. The First Lesson is taken from a book of the Old Testament, and is found on page 586 in the pew Bible. It coordinates with the Gospel Lesson. The Epistle Lesson is generally from St. Paul’s letters, and is found on page 982 in the pew Bible.

THE GOSPEL VERSE

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 22:1-14

P: The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, the twenty-second chapter.

1Again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, 2“The kingdom of heaven

may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, 3and sent

his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they

would not come. 4Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are

invited, See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.’ 5But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his

business, 6while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and

killed them. 7The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed

those murderers and burned their city. 8Then he said to his servants, ‘The

wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9Go therefore to

the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10And

those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11“But when

the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no

wedding garment. 12And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here

without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13Then the king said

to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer

darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14For

many are called, but few are chosen.”

P: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

The Gospel Verse may change weekly. We rise for the Holy Gospel as we would stand for Jesus Himself, since the Gospel is His living Word to us. The Gospel lesson is selected according to the season or festival Sunday of the Church Year, and is found on page 827 in the pew Bible. We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise, and then confess our faith.

WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy

Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was

crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day

He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the

right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to

judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy

Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE SERMON HYMN “Rejoice, My Heart, Be Glad and Sing” LSB 737

THE SERMON “A Life of Rejoicing” Philippians 4:4

1. Replace worry with trust in God.

2. Develop a gratitude attitude.

3. Focus your thoughts on noble things.

The Apostles Creed dates from about 75 AD and was used in the instruction of those to be baptized. We are confessing our personal faith. The Sermon Hymn is based on the pastor’s sermon topic. The Sermon applies God’s Word to our lives and helps to equip us to fulfill our baptismal calling to new life in Christ. The pastor preaches both the LAW (God’s judgment on our sin), and the GOSPEL (God’s love and forgiveness for our sins). We then share the same grace with those around us, as well as the Good News of salvation!

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S TEACHING

THE OFFERING PRAYER

THE OFFERING ANTHEM “Joy”

THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people

according to their needs. O God, our heavenly Father, You sent Your Son Jesus Christ to be the payment for the sins of the whole world. O Lord, hear

our prayers as we bring them before You now.

After the Offering Prayer, we ask all of those watching the service on the live stream, please fill out an attendance card. If you have any special prayer requests, you will find a space for this online as well. For those in attendance, please fill out a card that is in the pew. You can place your card in the offering plate as you leave the Sanctuary. Thank you.

His wisdom never plans in vain nor falters nor mistakes.

All that His counsels may ordain a blessèd ending makes.

Upon your lips, then, lay your hand, and trust His guiding love; Then like a rock your peace shall stand here and in heav’n above.

Tears try to drown it out, when you're walking through the fire,

When the voices drag you down.

But you can't fight it cause you're tired.

I can feel it is rising inside my soul. I surrender it all; let You take control.

Chorus: ‘Cause Your joy is greater than a thousand sorrows.

Your love will conquer all of my tomorrows.

It fills my heart with the sound of Your song.

Now I'm dancing all day long.

I love to feel Your joy! I love to feel Your joy!

It will find you in the deep, when you think there's no way out.

It is comfort, it is peace,

And you're never gonna hear a more beautiful sound.

I can feel it is rising inside my soul.

I surrender it all; let You take control. Chorus

It's always there. I feel it now, it fills me up; I pour it out. (4x)

Your joy is greater than a thousand sorrows.

Your love will conquer all of my tomorrows.

Your joy is greater than a thousand sorrows.

Your love will conquer all of my tomorrows.

It fills my heart with the sound of Your song.

Now I'm dancing all day long

I love to feel Your joy! I love to feel Your joy!

I love to feel Your joy! I love to feel Your joy!

C: O Holy Spirit, help us to have the mind of Christ that we may serve our

neighbor humbly in His name. Help us to act on the opportunities to serve and proclaim Christ in our words and actions, thus bringing glory

to His name.

P: We bring before You all who lost loved ones, possessions and property due

to the hurricanes and fires.

C: Continue to surround them with caring people, who bring hope and

healing in Your name. Keep all safe as they face the difficult days

ahead.

P: Dearest Father, we pray for Your healing hand to touch those affected by the coronavirus. Guide the doctors, nurses, researchers and caregivers as

they work to provide compassionate care. Lord, we pray that You will deliver

us from this pandemic. We thank and praise You for all who have been

healed from this virus, in the United States and throughout the world.

C: Guide us towards Your purpose for our lives and how we can be Your

hands and feet in our world. May our words and actions reflect Your

truth and peace to this world.

P: Lord, we pray that You would soften all hearts and minds with peace, love, and understanding, so that all of Your people can live in unity and mutual

respect.

C: May those who embrace evil and hatred be defeated, so that

goodness and love can abound.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, in Your Blessed Sacrament You give us Your body and

blood for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith.

C: As we receive these gifts, help us to make confession of the unity You

give in this Sacrament. May all come to Your table with humility and gratitude, receiving Your body and blood to their good and the glory

of Your holy name.

P: All these things and whatever else You would have us ask, grant us,

Heavenly Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now

lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever.

C: Amen.

THE SANCTUS

Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42. Here the congregation, established and gathered by God according to His purpose, agrees together on earth that it may be done for them by the Father in heaven, as prayers, supplications, and thanksgivings are offered for all in authority and all sorts of human need. More prayer requests are located in the Announcement Guide. “Sanctus” is the Latin word for holy, and is the name of an important hymn of Christian liturgy. It is sung at the heart of the eucharistic prayer, the prayer of consecration of the bread and wine. The text is taken from Isaiah 6:3, which describes the prophet’s vision of the throne of God surrounded by six-winged, ministering seraphim. This text is also influenced by Revelation. 4:8.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom

come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day

our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those

who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver

us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples

and said: "Take eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in

remembrance of me." In the same way also He took the cup after supper,

and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for

the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance

of me." The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you.

THE AGNUS DEI

The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4) The Words of Institution are a collection of all four Gospel accounts of the Last Supper, based on the oldest and fullest text found in 1 Corinthians 11. The Agnus Dei is a canticle that found its way into the liturgy as early as the 8th century. Following Jesus' baptism, John the Baptist acclaims Him as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." John 1:36

THE COMMUNION SONGS “Your Table I Approach” LSB 628

A Prayer before Communing- Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

5 O grant, most blessèd Lord, that earth and hell combined

May not about this sacrament raise doubt within my mind.

6 Oh, may I never fail to thank You day and night For Your true body and true blood, O God, my peace and light.

“Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” Isaiah 1:18 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8 A Prayer after Communing– Almighty and everlasting God I thank and praise You for feeding me the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having with my mouth received the holy Sacrament, I may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal, through Jesus Christ, My Lord. Amen

“Today Your Mercy Calls Us” LSB 915

“What a Friend We Have in Jesus” LSB 770

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry ev’rything to God in prayer!

Oh, what peace we often forfeit; Oh, what needless pain we bear—

All because we do not carry ev’rything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged—take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our ev’ry weakness—take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge—take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer.

In His arms He’ll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there.

Today Your mercy calls us to wash away our sin.

However great our trespass, whatever we have been,

However long from mercy our hearts have turned away,

Your precious blood can wash us and make us clean today.

Today Your gate is open, and all who enter in

Shall find a Father’s welcome and pardon for their sin.

The past shall be forgotten, a present joy be giv’n,

A future grace be promised, a glorious crown in heav’n.

O all-embracing Mercy, O ever-open Door,

What should we do without You when heart and eye run o’er? When all things seem against us, to drive us to despair,

We know one gate is open, one ear will hear our prayer.

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 The Nunc Dimittis is a passage in Luke 2:29-32, named after its first words in Latin. It is also commonly called the Canticle of Simeon, who was a devout Jew. Simeon had been promised by the Holy Ghost that he would not die until he had seen the Savior.

“There’s Something About that Name”

THE NUNC DIMITTIS

Page 13: Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with ...€¦ · P: Let us confess our sins unto God and implore His forgiveness for the sake of His Son, Jesus Christ. C: O God our

13

When Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for His circumcision, Simeon was there, and he took Jesus into his arms and uttered the words found in the Nunc Dimittis. Then follows the Aaronic Benediction in which the Lord recognizes us as His people, putting His name on us, and fulfilling all promises in His name. (Num. 6:24-25; Matt. 18:19-20) You are welcome to take this bulletin home with you for devotional purposes this week. If you want to discard it, please return it to an usher. We enter to pray and praise and we leave with a renewed commitment to serve and witness!

THE BENEDICTION

P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.

The Lord look upon you with His favor and give you His peace.

C: Amen.

THE POSTLUDE

Joyful, joyful we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love!

Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee, praising Thee, their sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the gloom of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

All Thy works with joy surround Thee,

Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,

Chanting bird, and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest, Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean-depth of happy rest!

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, fountainhead of love divine:

Joyful, we Thy heav’n inherit! Joyful, we by grace are Thine!

As You come to the Lord's Supper, you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your

Savior and Lord, that with Lutheran Christians, you believe His Body and Blood are present and

you desire to serve Him as a dynamic disciple in the fellowship of all believers. Our Holy

Communion practice is called "CLOSE" communion, not "CLOSED" communion. "Close"

communion invites all those who answer the following questions in the affirmative. We DO seek to

help each visitor and member, to prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have not

communed with us before, or if you cannot answer yes to the questions below, please speak to

our Pastor or an Elder before communing.

1. Have I been baptized in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

2. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God's

mercy in Christ?

3. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and my personal Savior from sin, death, and the

power of the devil?

4. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is personally present in the Sacrament of Holy Communion

with His true Body and Blood?

5. Do I intend, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to live a Godly life?

At Messiah, Communion is distributed in a manner whereby the individual cup, followed by the

common cup, are offered at the same table. Communicants seated in the middle sections of the

Sanctuary proceed to the altar first, standing behind the usher. Then the communicants in the side

sections will proceed to the altar, also standing behind the usher. This will provide a prayerful

setting surrounding the significance of receiving Christ's body and blood.

A wine that has been chemically treated to remove all alcohol and sulfites is offered in clear

glasses in the individual trays. Gluten-free wafers are available from the usher tables at the back.
