Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3
Dear friends,
In today’s gospel Jesus tells his disciples to be prepared and vigilant for the Son of Man’s return, like aservant waiting for his master’s homecoming. What does it mean for us to be prepared and vigilant? Thegospel reflection in Living Liturgy provides a very simple but serious consideration, namely thedifference between doing and being.
It also reminded me of our gospel a few weeks ago when Martha and Mary hosted Jesus. Martha wasbusy with kitchen tasks and Mary was hanging out with Jesus. I can relate. As a wife and mother, I do alot of event planning for holidays, vacations, sacrament celebrations, graduations and birthdays. We havea great house and yard for entertaining family and friends. I really do enjoy it but hostess duties can beall consuming. After many parties, I realized that often times hostess doing overshadowed my hostessbeing. I was so busy with the tasks that my guests were sometimes not cared for properly. Oh, they ateand drank well, but our time together was brief and not always meaningful before I rushed to the nexttask.
So this idea of doing and being raised some deeper questions for me and I offer them for your ownintrospection as we journey through life, waiting:
• How am I spending my time waiting? • What exactly am I awaiting…Christ’s return, the end of my earthly life, Jesus in my daily life?• Am I being in this life or just going through the motions? • Am I doing the Catholic Christian life or being a true Catholic Christian?• As a disciple, am I just doing what Jesus said or am I being Jesus? • Do I go to church or am I being church? • Do I recite a prayer or am I really conversing with God – talking and listening?• Am I caring for others and doing the works of mercy out of obligation or truly with God’s love?
None of this has to be grandiose but it takes lifelong discipline, dedication and mindfulness. MotherTeresa said to “do small things with great love.” Grand gestures that attract attention are not the goal. We’re called to be Jesus for the people we encounter in daily life family, friends and strangers. Smallthings can be quite simple a listening ear, a shoulder, a meal, 5 minutes of quiet time a day with God but offered with the greatest of love, now that’s the goal.
Can you imagine how all this being love could transform this broken world and prepare our hearts duringthis vigilant waiting? Just picture that moment when you see God face to face and he says to you, “Comeon in my good and faithful servant.”
Siempre Adelante,
Teresa RunyonFaith Life Minister
