Tunnelling for road, railways, sewer and storm water infra-structures, hard rock and coal mining, foundation drills and raise boring. These are just some of the areas where Palmieri organisation have become successful with the involvement of our custom designed and wholly in house products to the com-plete satisfaction of some of the most respected contractors worldwide. From the modest beginning in the yearly 1970s with limited activities Palmieri was able to overcome many difficulties with overriding courage and determination leading to quality and innovative products. Initially as a manufacturer and supplier of spare parts, Silvano Palmieri was determined to have his company become an international leader in prod-ucts designed and manufactured wholly in-house. The result of such continued efforts have culminated in major equipment manufacturers stipulating and incorporating Palmieri compo-nents in their new products.In 1987 further expansion resulted in the investment in a spe-cialist forging and mechanical factory. The new company pro-vides a century of experience in hot steel transformations and is capable of forging over 1.000 tons of blank steel per month.Latest development is new assembly and maintenance centre opened in 2015. All of the Palmieri Group companies support the main world tunnelling contractors by providing first class components and equipment thus making state-of–the-art tech-nology and cutting edge designs their own distinctive mark.

MANUFACTURING RANGE

Manufacture of TBM cuttingheads, shields, main bearing sup-ports and large sized equipment supporting the TBM and its back-up system, specifically developed to meet clients’ spe-cific needs and jobs’ requirements, as well as based on exist-ing client’s designs.Thanks to the experience accumulated in the last four decades, Palmieri Group is able to positively respond to each specific need by delivering “tailor-made” solutions and designs which take into account all jobs needs and geology’s specifications, thus providing clients with the most suitable and personalized solutions in the industry.

Rental of a wide range of equipment, including TBMs complete with back-up systems and rolling stock, as well as any other materials as needed to perform tunnelling operations.

CUTTINGHEADS

What sets Palmieri Group apart from most competitors is our capability and skills in the design and manufacturing of cut-tingheads. Such heads, up to 15 metres in diameter, are de-signed and manufactured in accordance with the specific needs of the TBM on which they will be mounted and of the specific geology to be encountered during the drive. Very often such cuttingheads are manufactured for existing TBMs whose bor-ing diameter needs to be altered or the existing cuttinghead design is not deemed to be suitable for the geological condi-tions of the new job to be started. Clients may wish to keep the old cuttinghead and buy a brand new one which has been conceived, designed and manufactured for its specific needs.

The Palmieri Group can even manufacture cuttingheads that has been designed by its clients; as often made in the past for some of the most respected and well known TBM makers worldwide.

TBM’S AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT TUNNELLING SERVICE TRAIN

Palmieri Group products’ fields of use is very wide and well diversified. From small sized items as, for instance, TBMs’ tail brush seals to the manufacture of large and sophisticated Back-Up systems.Here below some additional examples of Palmieri Group prod-ucts:

· Concrete segments erection systems for tunnel wall lin-ing, all shapes and sizes, designed and engineered upon request and based on clients’ specific needs (job type, segments shape and size).

· Besides the manufacture of complete segment erection system, Palmieri Group can also supply specific related accessories and parts such as spherical pins for segments with a wide range of threads and sizes.

SEGMENT CARS, EITHER FIXED OR REVOLVING

The Palmieri Group can supply complete tunnel service trains thanks to its in house design of flat cars, muck cars and a wide range of additional tunnelling support related rolling stock items for TBMs of all types and for every track gauge in the in-dustry. The rolling stock materials, mainly manufactured upon specific client’s request, are conceived to better meet specific jobs and site needs and can be equipped with many different optional features such as braking system, single or twin axles and others.Here below are just few examples of Palmieri’s very wide range of rolling stock products:

The wheels production deserves an outstanding mention: thanks to Palmieri Group in-house forging facilities which guarantees the highest quality, the feasibility of even very large diameters, from the forging mould to the finished item, including all machining works and heat treatments and, last but not least, the shortest lead times in the industry are guar-anteed.

AIRMOVeR lIFTINg AND MOVINg SySTeM

In 2012 we realized an innovative system, based on air cush-ions motion technology, able to lift and move heavy and huge equipment.This technology has already been used in order to lift and move “Martina”, the world’s biggest TBM (Tunnel Boring Ma-chine). Our technology of air cushions motion made the 180° shifting possible in a record time (the machine’s total weight was in the range of about 3.000 tons). No crane could have been able to move or displace such a heavy equipment in such a short time; completing the “U-turn” manoeuvering of the whole excavation system, with the traditional techniques, would have taken months of work,

while with the new system the working time has been re-duced to few days.Palmieri’s innovative system of pneumatic sliding cradles in steel construction on air cushions has rotated the gigantic TBM (in excess of 15,6 meters in diameter) with the aid of two trucks and some motor vehicles with drift checking system in complete security, literally by lifting it from the supporting surface and sliding it, almost without friction, to the launching position of the second tunnel drive. The system was specifically conceived and engineered by Palmieri Group for “Martina” and involved the use of 10 Cra-dles, made in a symmetrical manner in order to be used in different assembly configurations so to be able to move both the TBM and the back-up wagons.

TUNNel wIDeNINg MAChINeS

A special tunnel enlarging equipment allowing to work without traffic disruption, consisting of two large moving units, called “Pre-Cutting machine” and “Segment Erector Shield” respec-tively which works in two continuous and alternate phases, (cutting and segment laying) up to the tunnel completion.

During the first phase, the “Pre-Cutting” machine executes a semi-circular cut on the tunnel face, which is then promptly filled-in with special mortar before the demolition and the removal of all pre-existing material including the old tunnel.In the second phase, the Segment Erector Shield positions the

concrete segments in place for the subsequent consolidation step to form the new tunnel profile.This innovative solution has been entirely conceived, designed and manufactured by the Palmieri Group in 2013 for the en-largement of a 2 to 4 lane highway where stopping the traffic was deemed unacceptable by the highway authorities. The special pre-cutting blade had a length in excess of 8 metres.

The two machines are designed and manufactured in accord-

ance to the specific tunnel requirements and can be used either together or independently.In the case the erection of pre-cast concrete segments is not needed, the pre-cutting machine can also be operated alone and the cutting blade can be modified by adopting different types of tools that can better comply with the specific job needs. The segment erector is operated independently when the tun-nel demolition and excavation phases are made by using more traditional methods.

Milling equipment for railway cars for enlargement and mainte-nance of single and double-track tunnels. The milling equipment is manufactured in accordance with client’s dimensional requirements and to the material of the ceil-ing in the existing tunnel (bricks, concrete, rock, etc.).
