Modernize Your Data-Driven Business
To compete in the modern digital economy, enterprise organizations need to react quickly to changing business
conditions and new economic situations. For these companies, technology is key to success. Technology helps
them streamline processes, automate office and business functions, and deliver business intelligence for better
decision-making.
The database platform is the foundation that makes this technology possible. An efficient database helps
organizations quickly process high volumes of operational and transactional data to strengthen their competitive
position. SAP offers data-driven enterprises an in-memory database platform with the highest levels of performance
and functionality. To take advantage of these capabilities, many organizations are migrating their database
platforms to the SAP HANA platform.
Accelerate and Simplify Operations
Data is one of most valuable corporate assets, and quick, reliable access is critical for efficient day-to-day
operations. SAP HANA can dramatically increase the speed of your real-time transactional and analytical
workloads. Using a single data copy on a unified platform, SAP HANA organizes data in columns, and then
partitions, distributes and stores that data in high-speed memory across multiple servers. This approach gives you
faster queries that aggregate data more efficiently, while avoiding costly full-table scans, materialized views and
analytic indexes.
Modern enterprise organizations depend on business intelligence applications to make faster, better decisions, and
SAP HANA is the ideal foundation for these applications. Analytics processing based on in-memory data
technologies and advanced algorithms delivers new business insights in real time. Hybrid transactional and
analytical processing capabilities help you to develop next-generation applications and deploy them on any device.
With best-in-class development tools, you can deliver customized experiences to your users with the right data
served at the right time.
Efficient system administration and IT operations are critical to the success of enterprise organizations. SAP HANA
helps you monitor processes, ensure data and application security, and achieve continuous availability.
Comprehensive administration capabilities, including system start, stop, restart, backup and recover, along with
offline diagnostics, let you manage your SAP HANA platform from any location, on any device. Through advanced
tooling, you can analyze Structured Query Language (SQL) execution plans and CPU and memory utilization over
time to pinpoint problems. Support for the latest encryption and auditing techniques, including encryption for data at
rest, keeps communications, data storage and application services secure.
Plan for Success
Advance preparation is key to a successful SAP HANA deployment. Migrating to SAP HANA often requires updates
to many essential system components: hardware, database, application environment and associated, unbundled
software. Because SAP HANA is a columnar database, heterogeneous migrations from row-based databases
require additional detailed planning to ensure a problem-free deployment.
When deploying SAP HANA, you must carefully size your hardware. Potential challenges created by improperly
sized hardware include inability to meet your performance goals and accommodate future growth, as well as
consumption of too much of your budget. Because SAP HANA structures and stores data differently than other
relational databases, it has unique hardware resource requirements. SAP HANA has a relatively smaller data
storage footprint; however, it needs higher CPU performance and additional memory resources. If you use
multitemperature data management techniques or perform analytical processing on the operational SAP HANA
platform, you also need to account for the performance requirements of these individual workloads.
4
SAP implements standardized, optimized processes that allow your applications to access data stored in SAP
HANA. To realize the true performance of SAP HANA, your applications need to execute these processes
according to SAP guidelines. However, users of previous SAP databases have historically aligned applications to
specific business needs by modifying these processes. This custom code regularly uses outdated data modeling
techniques that are poorly suited for SAP HANA. To guarantee optimal performance, you need to update any
customized applications before migrating to SAP HANA.
In-house teams often lack the experience to deploy SAP HANA. The data migration process is dependent on the
complexity of your existing database environment and requires strategic planning to avoid disrupting normal
business processes. Highly complex environments may require expertise that your team does not have.
Furthermore, there are many third-party tools available to assist with your SAP HANA migration, and you need to
thoroughly understand the usability of those tools before your migration begins.
Some versions of third-party applications that connect to previous SAP databases cannot interoperate with SAP
HANA. In such cases, you must upgrade these applications to supported versions during the migration process. For
many applications, this upgrade process can be long and complex. And, if your mission-critical applications are
unsupported on SAP HANA, the entire migration project may be impossible. Before deploying, you must verify that
all third-party applications have a clear migration path to and will continue to work with SAP HANA.
Migrating to SAP HANA requires strategic investments in dedicated hardware, database software and annual
maintenance. SAP requires you to install SAP HANA on certified infrastructure, either dedicated appliances or
existing resources leveraged through their TDI program.
Significant investments in additional resources are often required. To complicate matters, the size of your SAP
HANA installation is directly related to the costs of both the hardware and software. Failure to size your SAP HANA
platform correctly can result in high costs for unused database storage.
Understand Your Options
A wide range of options is available, from on-premises or managed service, bare-metal or virtual machine, to
appliance or TDI. Choose the SAP HANA deployment scenario that best meets your business needs, budget and
resources.
Deploy On-Premises or as a Managed Service
In an on-premises deployment, you have complete control over the security, scalability and configurability of your
SAP HANA systems. With increased flexibility, an on-premises deployment lets you configure and reconfigure both
the hardware and software to meet your evolving needs. Because the equipment is physically located within your
building and managed by your IT department, you have direct control over data security. However, you are
responsible for the full costs of both the hardware and software required to deploy your SAP HANA platform.
Additionally, to ensure successful operation, IT must be a core competency of your business. You need qualified
system administrators on staff to maintain and monitor your SAP HANA platform.
In a managed service deployment, a third-party service provider builds, hosts and manages your entire SAP HANA
solution in a private cloud environment. Hosted private clouds can provide increased on-demand scalability as
service providers often pool a large number of resources across many customers. Managed services also simplify
security, as the service provider is responsible for both the physical and digital security of your SAP HANA solution.
However, in a managed service deployment, you are reliant on the service provider to deliver a quality experience.
Run in a Virtual Machine or on a Bare-Metal Server
Virtualization software can increase the efficiency of your SAP HANA infrastructure. In a virtualized system, a
resource abstraction layer divides available hardware and software resources among several SAP HANA platform
instances. This allows you to run multiple SAP HANA workloads on both single node and scale-out certified SAP
HANA systems.
5
In a nonproduction environment, virtualization software can speed SAP HANA application development and testing
by allowing multiple developers to share a single physical resource. The scalability provided by virtualization
software allows developers to provision exactly what they need, eliminating over- and under-provisioning. Self-
service capabilities let developers provision resources exactly when they need them, and automatically retire those
resources when they are no longer needed.
For SAP HANA production environments using virtualization software, IT operations can deliver resources with
increased service level agreements (SLAs). Automated resource provisioning capabilities let IT operations deploy
SAP HANA faster and easily manage peak analytic workloads with better scalability. Live migration of SAP HANA
across multiple hosts in minutes with zero downtime and zero data loss helps maximize the performance of all SAP
HANA resources. Unified management of SAP HANA resources with your virtualized data center provides continuity
and simplifies operations management.
Deliver Performance With an Appliance or a TDI
Irrespective of whether your SAP HANA platform runs on virtual machines, bare-metal servers, on-premises or in a
managed, private cloud, the underlying hardware is critical to guaranteeing SAP HANA performance. To meet SAP
requirements, you have a choice of deploying your SAP HANA platform on a certified appliance or a TDI as shown
in Figure 1.
Figure 1. Comparison of an Appliance and a TDI
In the appliance model, enterprise hardware providers design and build certified, standardized and highly optimized
appliances based on well-defined specifications to run SAP HANA workloads. They rigorously validate and carefully
size their appliances for individual use cases. This approach allows you to select the right level of compute
resources to meet your needs. Because they deliver appliances as preconfigured hardware with pre-installed
software packages, integrating the appliance into your data center is quick and easy. The appliance model is
extremely scalable and lets you quickly accommodate increased data growth with additional appliances. Both your
hardware provider and SAP fully support the appliance and provide ongoing support and maintenance.
6
For some organizations, the appliance model is not an optimal solution. Because the appliance must conform to a
specified hardware configuration, there is no opportunity to integrate pre-owned hardware into the appliance.
Furthermore, integrating an appliance in an existing data center may require changes to established IT processes.
The TDI model uses both new and existing certified infrastructure to create a cluster that meets SAP HANA
requirements while giving you flexibility and choice over the hardware components of your platform. This model lets
you reduce hardware costs by reusing existing SAP-certified assets. If you need additional compute, storage or
networking resources, you can purchase them from your preferred hardware vendor.
To successfully deploy SAP HANA on a TDI, you must first select and integrate all hardware. All compute resources
must follow the exact same bill of material as a certified SAP HANA appliance excluding storage, and all storage
devices must be SAP certified. You then need to perform the entire software installation, including the operating
system, database and any required SAP HANA applications. Finally, you have to validate your SAP HANA platform
using the SAP HANA Going-Live Check offered by SAP Digital Business Services and the SAP HANA Hardware
Configuration Check Tool. Table 1 summarizes the difference between the appliance and TDI models.

As compared to the appliance model, a TDI deployment offers significant capital expenditure (capex) savings,
although the deployment can be considerably more complex. A successful deployment requires a staff of highly
skilled experts, including administrators who are certified to install the SAP HANA software. Staff acquisition,
training and certification costs can quickly offset any potential capex savings, while also extending the project
schedule.
Realize the Full Potential of Your SAP HANA Platform
As a high-performance database platform, SAP HANA optimizes your database operations to power a wide variety
of applications. It is a critical component of an ecosystem that helps you manage your data and gain valuable
business insight.
Manage Data Location To Increase Database Performance
With a traditional relational database, only a small amount of data resides in main memory at any one time. The
database holds the vast majority of data in persistent storage. While access time for persistent storage can vary, it
is always much higher than main memory access. As a result, database performance can suffer when processes
need to access large amounts of data.
7
Poor database performance often impedes real-time analytic workloads, as complex reports can take days to
process. As a result, you experience workflow constraints on your business and limits on the insight you gain from
your data, slowing your reaction to changing market conditions.
To remove the performance impact of accessing persistent storage, SAP HANA keeps your entire database in
memory. Combined with other innovations in the underlying structure of the database, including advanced data
compression techniques and a column-based architecture, these technologies increase database performance for
complex queries and processes. These improvements accelerate a range database operations and applications,
from customer transaction recording and complex reporting to real-time analytics, predictive modeling and flexible
queries.
Plan in Real Time
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is the real-time, integrated management of core business processes powered
by advanced technology. ERP tools help you collect, store, manage and interpret data from many business
activities, giving you an integrated and continuously updated view of core business processes. These tools unify
data across departments, business functions and outside stakeholders in a single database that is accessed by a
variety of applications.
Designed specifically for in-memory computing, SAP S/4HANA is an intelligent ERP suite that combines analytical
operations and transaction processing into a single platform. To help you make data-driven decisions, it analyzes
real-time operational data using lightweight modeling that supports immediate reflection of structural changes. The
analytical models are extensible and easily reusable in different scenarios, and they allow interoperability with
transactional developments.
The SAP S/4HANA predictive analytics library allows you to apply predictive and machine-learning algorithms to
your data. These capabilities help your entire organization gain insight into critical business functions.
Finance officers can better understand financial performance in real time and improve the effectiveness of a
range of processes, from planning and analysis to period-end close and treasury management.
Supply chain managers gain increased visibility across the digital supply chain and can use machine-learning
technology for logistics, manufacturing and asset management.
Procurement specialists can use intelligent applications with machine learning to improve supplier
management, streamline purchasing and deploy collaborative sourcing and contract management.
Product managers can develop fully aligned product portfolios that allow them to manage life cycles, control
production costs and deploy resources effectively.
Business analysts can get a complete picture of operations and use customer insights to help marketing, sales
and service teams work more productively, grow revenue and accelerate opportunities.
Unify and Analyze Current and Historical Data
SAP BW/4HANA is an enterprise data warehouse that consolidates data across your entire organization to support
decision-making with a standardized data model. By defining common semantics for interpreting all data values,
SAP BW/4HANA provides a single, comprehensive source of current and historical information. This source
includes data from SAP applications and third-party solutions, as well as unstructured, geospatial and Apache
Hadoop-based data.
Using this single source, you can develop analytical models to support new business innovations. Simplified
modeling and administration capabilities decrease development time and speed up change requests. Intuitive user
interfaces increase productivity and user adoption, while reducing shadow analytics. High-volume, real-time data
processing reduces wait time for data handling and enables intelligent automation.
8
Integrate New Sources of Data
As internet of things (IoT) sensors become more affordable, new devices and machines that transmit data come
online every day. IoT technology offers automated mechanisms for filtering and refining IoT data. Using analytics
tools, you can gain a deeper understanding of your data, and apply that knowledge to a variety of challenges:
Create targeted marketing campaigns and promotions, reduce maintenance costs, avoid equipment failures and
improve business operations.
Properly managed IoT data is most valuable when it is connected and complemented with other data sources.
Processing IoT data with traditional ERP transactional data in SAP HANA offers immediate context, helps uncover
correlations between real-time data and historical data, and enables new business insights that were previously
impossible.
Manage Your Data
In modern enterprises, data comes from an ever-increasing number of sources. From real-time transactional data
and historical business data to modern IoT data, you need to successfully manage your data to extract the most
valuable insight.
Hitachi Vantara’s Pentaho Data Integration (PDI) provides the extract, transform and load (ETL) capabilities
required to capture, blend, transform and store data from a wide variety of sources in a uniform and consistent
format. As shown in Figure 2, PDI moves data between your SAP HANA database and a wide variety of relational
databases, enterprise applications and big data stores. Keep your hot data in-memory, offload your warm data to
local, persistent storage and move your cold data to Hadoop or NoSQL databases.

system is an integrated system of enterprise-class hardware components with independently scalable server,
network and storage resources. Delivered in single or multirack configurations, UCP CI supports the high availability
and reliability requirements of SAP HANA, while delivering a simple, repeatable way to scale your landscape. With
support for up to 224 cores, 48 solid-state disks (SSDs), and 12TB RAM, UCP CI is optimized and certified for large
SAP S/4HANA embedded analytics workloads.
As SAP HANA-certified enterprise storage, Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) family systems support the SAP
HANA TDI model.2 Built on 20 years of experience, Hitachi’s VSPs are enterprise storage technology in all-flash
and hybrid configurations that provide unparalleled performance, efficiency and reliability. VSP family systems
support up to 4.8 million IOPS with an all-flash storage capacity of 8PB and a hybrid storage capacity of 255PB.
Understand Your Backup and Recovery Options
Planning for data backup and recovery is a critical part of any SAP HANA deployment. Hitachi Data Instance
Director (HDID) protects your SAP HANA database using a rapid, space-conscious backup policy with configurable
recovery point objective (RPO) and retention periods.
HDID automates copy data management. This capability lets you make snapshot-based backups of your SAP
HANA database at the frequency you define. These snapshots along with the active SAP HANA configuration are
stored and retained for a user-defined period of time. You can use these snapshots for backup and recovery of both
the data area and the configuration files for scale-up SAP HANA databases. The file backup functionality of HDID
allows you to back up the SAP HANA log files to enable a fine-grained restore window.
In case of catastrophic failure, you can use HDID with the native tools in SAP HANA to quickly restore a snapshot of
your database. The tools restore SAP HANA data is to its original location, while the configuration files are available
for manual integration into the running SAP HANA instance. You can restore these snapshots, including both data
and configuration, to either the original host, in case of system failure, or to a new host, to facilitate a system copy of
the SAP HANA database.
Snapshot functionality using HDID adds very little overhead to your SAP HANA database during snapshot creation.
It relies on the SAP HANA savepoint mechanism that runs automatically on the database.

Simplify Storage Management
Managing storage resources in an enterprise-grade SAP HANA deployment can be difficult. The Hitachi Storage
Adapter for the SAP HANA Cockpit delivers simple, efficient storage management for Hitachi storage through your
web browser. It simplifies storage backup and replication operations, including operating system backup, and
database backup and clone, using Hitachi Thin Image (HTI), Hitachi ShadowImage and SAP HANA storage
snapshots.
The Hitachi Storage Adapter for the SAP HANA Cockpit lets you register and monitor your Hitachi storage
subsystems. It generates a range of reports, including LUN and port performance, replication, storage snapshot
history, host group, storage pool, parity group, CLPR and schedule, which can be viewed through a web browser
anytime and on any device.
Hitachi Thin Image lets you create and manage snapshots of SAP HANA storage data volumes. The high-speed,
nondisruptive technology rapidly creates up to one million point-in-time data copies without impacting host service
or performance levels. Because snapshots store only the changed data, the storage capacity required for each
snapshot copy is substantially smaller than the source volume. HTI snapshot copies are fully read/write compatible
with other hosts, and can be used for system backups, application testing and SAP HANA database restoration.
Hitachi ShadowImage lets you create and manage logical volume replication in a single storage system without
using host resources. The high-speed, nondisruptive local mirroring technology rapidly creates multiple data copies
within all storage systems. By enabling concurrent operations, such as backup and batch processing, it keeps data
RAID-protected and fully recoverable, without affecting service or performance levels. You can split replicated data
volumes from the host applications and use them for system backups, application testing and SAP HANA database
restoration.
