In 2006, EU standards provided a framework for the integrated performance of buildings. 2015 will bring us the passive house as an EU benchmark. In 2020, there will be regulations for Near Zero Energy Buildings. With renewable energy systems, these norms will impact the distribution networks: Smart Grids will integrate buildings to the network and facilitate storage of electricity by linking the batteries of electric vehicles. We have already taken the lead.

We are a Cleantech company, meaning our products, services, processes, and technologies prevent or reduce impact on the environment. And we go beyond that. In choices of materials, manufacturing footprint, or our own operations, recyclable materials, closed processes and energy efficient buildings with presence-detector luminaires and heat recovery ventilation are proof of our commitment to sustainable development.

In our commitment to constant product development we have gone to great measure to create environments and structures which spawn cutting-edge thinking. And we have attempted to put our people near communities where that type thinking is the norm. And of critical importance, we have customers who share our ambitions.

Our most important partner in product development is our client. Our innovative solutions are often results of close partnerships with our customers—products developed to address a specific customer need. This customer relationship has been an underlying ingredient in our successful history of cutting-edge R&D.

Currently, we operate product development offices in five different countries, and together we have registered over 50 global patents.

Our newest R&D offices were placed in 2010 in Espoo, Finland, right next to Aalto University’s School of Science and Technology, one of the northern Europe’s leaders in the research of renewable energy. This Espoo facility gives us access to an international research community actively involved in energy efficiency, sustainability, and smart grid technology.

At the center of our success in product innovation has always been rigorous laboratory testing. In January 2011, we opened a new lab with emphasis on more efficient testing of underground cabling technologies. The lab also features better training facilities for the education of our staff. In June 2011, we opened another new laboratory including a simulator for winter conditions which works even in summer. Movement detection luminaires have their own dedicated test area, and, for example, solar panels and domestic energy storage can be tested for optimizing renewable energy usage. And at our office facilities

around the planet our employees are surrounded by innovation and green thinking. We use our own innovations to save money, as well as minimize environmental impact. Lights and room temperature adjust automatically to the presence of humans. Our factories are equipped with Enervent heat recovery systems. And though electric automobiles are not yet the norm, we are looking that direction with EV charging stations in front of our offices around the world.

We believe that to live innovation is a precondition for creating it. And we know a good idea can come from anywhere.

In the interest of having factories close to our markets, we have chosen to manufacture our products in seven countries — Finland, France, Italy, Spain, Estonia, Russia, and India. And in every market where we manufacture, we strive to live up to our sustainable promise.

Each of our plant is specializing on their core manufacturing technology allowing focused investments in World Class Manufacturing. Be it metal component manufacturing, surface treatment, plastic injection molding, or assembly work we always develop and choose efficient solutions saving energy and environment. More and more in the world of manufacturing, the green choice is also the financially smart choice.

We structures our production processes with the goal of making green practices the most financially-favorable and efficient. But it does not stop there: We are also actively involved in auditing and continuously improving our work processes and adopting models which make human activity more efficient.

Recently, we began the development of Lean Manufacturing in all factories through our EOX-program (Ensto Operational Excellence). It started with the 5S, Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain, as foundation for excellence and is accompanied by SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die), Value Stream Mapping, Visual Flow, Quality and other programs.

Underlying theme is focusing on the value added and reducing the waste. This results in shorter lead times and increasing sustainability, efficiency and flexibility for the benefit of our customers.

Our goal is that “green” not be thought of as different, but that it will be the standard, the natural and logical choice in a world of competing options.

We offer solutions in four key areas: overhead line and underground cable networks, power quality and network automation.

We pay special attention to creating innovative accessories with long lifetimes for the construction of reliable, low-loss networks. Reliable electricity distribution is, in fact, the prerequisite for the Smart Grid. The energy balance in Smart Grids, where significant amounts of energy are produced with so called micro power plants, is based on a reliable self-recovering network.

Our solutions for overhead line networks are well known: the low and mediumvoltage line accessories withstand the most demanding and extreme conditions. Moreover, our solutions for underground cable networks are recognized worldwide not only for their long lifetimes but also for their wide variety.

In power quality we are committed to creating solutions, which ensure required power quality for consumers even at the most remote points of the grid. We are developing a new generation of voltage boosters which eliminate voltage sags, as well as the DC Link which

facilitates remote electrification while maintaining superb quality of power for the consumer.

Our network automation solutions, such as load break switches with remote controls and fault indicators, guarantee high utilization of lines and fast automated recovery from any fault situation.

Our uniqueness, however, is not built only on products. The fact that we are locally present and ready to train and assist, has been cited by our satisfied customers as the reason they continually turn to us as a partner.

Our Enclosing Systems target environments where a high degree of protection is needed. We use the latest robot technology with automatic robotic cells for manufacturing and customizing our enclosings and housings. We also work closely with standardizing- and testing bodies in certifying products according to customer needs. Our enclosing systems are supported by high-quality industrial components and integration services.

Our customized enclosing solutions are based on our standard enclosures. These solutions often include different cut-outs and openings and can be furnished with accessories and other electrical components.

Our tailor-made enclosing solutions are based on the customer’s product projects. These solutions are developed according to customers’ special needs, including, for example, customer-specific molding tools and measurements. The related projects often involve

close cooperation between our in-house design department and the customer’s research and development department.

We also offer customer-specific integration services based on integrated enclosures delivered as a ready, functioning package for the customer’s own assembly process. These solutions typically include third-party components and wiring.

Solar and wind are fast-growing sectors, both growing last year by more than 50 percent. All this is what we call the “megatrend of sustainable development” which is not only a European phenomenon but one that is embraced in China and India, as well.

Photovoltaic is one of our focus segments, and our solution offerings include thermoplastic customized and pre-assembled combiner boxes for solar plants, a variety of enclosing systems, such as for power- and string control purposes, as well as generator junction boxes. In wind, we make

metal and thermoplastic enclosure solutions, including applications such as control boxes, node boxes, and de-icing systems for hard winter conditions to name a few.

Even our newest Cubo X enclosures, built for potentially-explosive environments, have been designed with the renewable market in mind. While the world’s oil and gas deposits are diminishing, energy generated from waste is growing, and Cubo X fills the need for safety in facilities where waste gas is present.

Our industrial components, including industrial terminals and switches, are also certified against the most demanding industry standards in a wide range of applications. We offer standard terminals which can be customized with prints and customer-specific labels, and entirely custom, customer-specific solutions, with services ranging from 3D modeling to manufacturing and assembly.

Heating systems

We are leaders in electrification and ventilation solutions which enable energy efficient, healthy, and comfortable living.

Our energy efficient and energy saving hybrid house solutions enable a 200-square-meter home in a climate like Finland’s to be heated for less than 20 euros per month with total energy bills averaging under 100 euros per month.

These solutions offer wide selection of building technology products meeting low-energy and passive house requirements. The offering includes ventilation systems with more than 90% heat recovery, electrical heating solutions, home control and monitoring products and lighting solutions.

These solutions are also designed with entire blocks of flats in mind. Simple features such as motion-detector controlled lighting, underfloor heating and controlling, frost protection, safe and functional electricity distribution boards are key in savings and energy efficiency in large-scale dwellings.

Our LED lighting is also revolutionizing common areas of apartment buildings, tenfolding energy-efficiency and multifolding luminaire’s life span.

And our most celebrated, newest product family is likely the Ensto Green Park - electric vehicle charging system, which was chosen by the city of Oslo, Norway, as the system to keep its thousands of electric vehicles charged and on the road. It has garnered attention not only for its easy installation and flawless performance, but for its

design as well. In Ensto Green Park family we have products for normal charging without fee and also for fast charging for a fee.

Our Ensto Workpoint electrification solution for offices, service poles, mini posts, and socket boxes, enables customers to move electricity and data connections according to changing needs, maximizing freedom and mobility.

The EnstoNet prefabricated installation system is a flexible and modifiable solution ensuring easy adaptation to the changing schedules and plans of the construction industry. Enabling easy connection and coupling, the EnstoNet requires only a fraction of the traditional on-site installation time.
