Ricochet - Verkefni Founded dead man and a dog The police in Wales found a dead man and a dead dog in a cottage on a farm, this Sunday afternoon. They had both been shot and the gun was founded in the cottage. We asked Mrs. Price and Ma Hughes a few questions. Do you know what happened here this Sunday afternoon ? Mrs. Price: I know what happened but how it happened, I can’t imagine. Ma Hughes: I heard the news about Owen and the dog. Terrible news. Did Owen and Huw act different the last days ? Mrs. Price: I have not noticed that, there was always some jealousy between the brothers, but nothing special the last days. Ma Hughes: No I don’t think so. What do you think that happened? Mrs. Price: It’s hard to imagine what happened in the cottage and I don’t wan’t to guess anything. Ma Hughes: No, of course I don’t know. I don’t think Huw would have killed his brother, Huw was too kind and stable man. He wouldn’t hurt a bug. And Beth was Huw’s dog and I don’t think he would want to kill her.

Founded dead man and a dogThe police in Wales found a dead man and a dead dog in a cottage on a farm, this Sunday afternoon. They had both been shot and the gun was founded in the cottage. We asked Mrs. Price and Ma Hughes a few questions.

Do you know what happened here this Sunday afternoon ?Mrs. Price: I know what happened but how it happened, I can’t imagine. Ma Hughes: I heard the news about Owen and the dog. Terrible news.

Did Owen and Huw act different the last days ?Mrs. Price: I have not noticed that, there was always some jealousy between the brothers, but nothing special the last days.Ma Hughes: No I don’t think so.

What do you think that happened?Mrs. Price: It’s hard to imagine what happened in the cottage and I don’t wan’t to guess anything.Ma Hughes: No, of course I don’t know. I don’t think Huw would have killed his brother, Huw was too kind and stable man. He wouldn’t hurt a bug. And Beth was Huw’s dog and I don’t think he would want to kill her.

Discussion - Ricochet

1) I think it is more important to him to live with Rhiannon and being able to claim Margo as his own daughter. He loves her and talks about her a lot. He want’s a life with Rhiannon and his daughter. He had to find a way to get his brother out of his way.

2) Huw was a stable man but Owen was often angry. Huw owned more in the farm that Owen. I think that is why she was married to Huw. Rhiannon cheated on Huw with his brother, she probably should not had done that . She gave Owen hope on their relationship and kept him warmed. She should have been loyal to Huw.

3) If she had moved in with Owen, Huw must have been hurt and angry. Angry at his brothers and angry at his wife. Of course he would be hurt too, his wife cheated on him with is brother and Margo was Owen’s daughter. It couldn’t have been worse. He probably would not want to talk to his brother again or his wife. It would have been complicated with Margo though. But nothing in the story show a dark side of Huw so it is hard to say what how he would have handle things.

A. Please

1. Why is the film called "Please"?The film is called please because Peter Dunn was always beging people to do something, ‘’Please , just talk to me..’’ ‘’please just tell me’’

2. What is the main conflict in the story? The main conflict in the story is that Peter has a hard life because he split up with his girlfriend because he was a novelist and didn’t pay her and their daughter any attention. His writing always came first and that made him crazy.

3. Who is the main character? What is he like? What do you think of himPeter Dunn is the main character, he feels very sorry for him self and craves for attention, I don’t like him because he is a looser to me. He doesn’t try to help him self and work on his problems , he just wants others to focus on him.

3. Did you like the film? Why? Why not?I am on both sides in liking the film, I got a little irritated watching it , specially when he was being an asshole. But in the end I liked it.

4. Is there a moral to the story? What is it? What does the gun signify? The moral to the story I think is love the people around you and show them respect, if you want something you fight for it. The gun signifies that life is unpredictable so be careful.

B. My Name Is Lisa

1. Who is Lisa? What is she like? Lisa is the main character in the film, she is very interesting. Lisa reads a lot of books and mainly about something real not novels. She loves her mother and it hurts her to see that the Alzheimer is getting worse and worse, still she helps her as much as she can.

2. What is the main plot of the story? The main plot of the story is about this little girl who’s mother is sick with Alzheimer. She is always helping her mother in any ways because she keeps getting worse and worse. She tries to keep calm but when her mother doesn’t recognize her she gets very sad.

Page 4: Ensku mappa

3. What is the message of the story? The message of the story is not to take life for granted because it can change in a second.

4. Did you like the film? Why? Why not?I really liked the film, specially because Alzheimer is in my family so I understood more and could relate to the girl.

C. Short story - alternative ending - chose either Please or My Name Is Lisa to work with.

1. Write an alternative ending for the film - and explain why you chose to end it differently

After Peter gets shot he lies there and his life flashes before his eyes, he doesn’t like what he has done the past 8 years. Suddenly he sees the ambulance lights and then he passes out. He is rushed to the hospital and straight to surgery. He survives and wakes up with no one by his side. When he gets out he has decided to get his life together again and goes to his girls and makes up with them. He is given another chance and he changed to better.

Creative writing – The Importance of Being Earnest

A. Love.    What part does love play in The Importance of Being Earnest. Write a short text discussing love as a topic:

The main point with the story might not be love but love has a big place in the

story. Some things wouldn’t have happened if love weren’t a part of it. In every

act there’s love. The love is though different between the characters in the story.

Some love in the story is very complicated and some isn’t that complicated. Jack

and Gwendolen show their love for each other in every act. They have some

issues but let that never get in the way of their love for each other. In the story is

Cecily obsessed with romance and love. She falls for Algernon despite the lies he

told her at the beginning when they met. You can see in the story that when love

is so strong then doesn’t problems matter. At first thought Gwendolen and Jack

that they couldn’t be together because of Gwendolen’s mother. Algernon and

Cecily thought that their love could never happened because of the lies and Jack.

But at the end they ended up together and engaged. You can see in the story that

the love was so strong that both Cecily and Gwendolen could forgive the men for

their deceptions when they discover the good intentions behind their crimes.

D. Point of View How He Sees It.    Look at the roles of Lane and Merriman in The Importance of Being Earnest. How are the servants treated? How do they react to their positions? What do they think of the events? Choose a scene from the play, and rewrite it in the form of a diary entry by Lane or Merriman. Include only what that character might know from his own involvement:

Lane is Algernon’s servant and Merriman is Jack’s servant. The servants or

butlers are not treated well in the story and generally weren’t servants treated

well on this time. They had only one role and that was to do what their master

asks them to do. If some problem would happen could the master blame his

servant for it. Jack was though better to his servant that Algernon was. The

servants couldn’t say anything when they were treated badly because otherwise

they would get fired and it wasn’t easy to get a job on this time.

Dear diary

Today did Algernon’s aunt, Lady Bracknell, come to visit. It was a really stressful

day and Algernon was playing on the piano when I was laying out afternoon tea

Page 6: Ensku mappa

for Algernon. He asked me if I liked his playing and I really did but it was to risk

full so I just said that I didn’t fell it was polite to listen. I had to make cucumber

sandwiches for Lady Bracknell and it really irritated me when Algernon ate them

all and blame it one me that I hadn’t bought cucumbers. Otherwise I think the

visit went well but I don’t like when Lady Bracknell comes to visit. She makes me

nerves.

E. A diary is usually reckoned to be a record of actual events – Cecily‘s is closer to fiction. Write some of her other diary entries which takes place on stage or some other time which you will have to imagine:

Dear diary

Today is our Algernon wedding day. I have been questioning this wedding but

maybe it’s just my nerves. Or is it cold feet? What should I do?

What nonsense! I love Algernon very much, despite his name. It might be high

age difference between us, but he loves me and is going to make me happy. We

will be happy in our beautiful home and we are going to have children and be

one big happy family! He has spent all his money to give me my fairytale

wedding. All of our friends and family is here to celebrate with us on this

beautiful day. Jack has given his blessing and everything is going to be perfect

today. After this thinking, I know it was just a nonsense if me to question this

wedding. So many girls would want to be in my steps and I was just being stupid.

It makes me smile thinking of my future with Algernon. I am so excited to wear

my stunning weeding dress and walk down the aisle with Jack besides me who

will hand me to Algernon. Now I can hear the bells ringing. That means that I

shall stop writing and go to get ready. This is going to be amazing day dear diary!

Until next time

Cecily

ENS 403 - The Importance Of Being Earnest

ACT 1

1. ´The old fashioned respect for the young is fast dying out' (page 22) is the opposite of what we might expect to be said. What would we expect to be said? Find other example in Act 1 where what is said is the opposite of what we might expectDivorces are made in haven – marriage is made in heaven. Algernon often talks like this.2. Re-read the scene where Jack is proposing to Gwendolen. What opinions do you form of the character? He asks her about the weather and she says that when somebody asks her about the weather she always feel quite certain that hey mean something else and that makes her nervous. Jack was meaning something else and he says to her that ever since he met her he has admired her more than any girl. Her ideal had always been to love someone of the name Ernest. He me mention that he must got christened at ones and that they must get married at once. She asks “Married?”, he love her and she adore him but he hasn’t proposed to her yet. Nothing had been said about marriage at all. He is very nervous and embarrassing and asks if he may propose to her know. He say that she know what he are going to ask her but she wants to hear it. Than he propose to her and she says of course. He is slow thinking and Gwendolen almost take over in the proposal. 3. Is Gwendolen afraid of her mother? Why / why not?Yes and no, but more yes because she always do what she says her to do and a little afraid to her. She is certain and that is why I say a little no because she have the courage to do some things that her mother isn’t going to be happy about.4. What differences are between Jack and Algernon?

ACT 2

1. In what way does your impression of Cecily change, or develop, through Act 2? Look at her conversations with Miss Prism, then with Algernon and lastly with Gwendolen. She is unconfident, she changes characters. She is this incident young schoolgirl with Miss Prism, when she meets Algernon they share interests, and then with Gwendolen she is a little bitch. She becomes more aggressive trough Act 2.

Page 8: Ensku mappa

2. Is the relationship between Algernon and Jack different in this Act?Yes Algernon ruins the plan of Jack, he was lying that his brother was dead and then Algernon comes and pretend to be Ernest his brother. Than Jack becomes angry and they have to act like they are brothers.3. What will be the effect on the audience of seeing Jack enter dressed in mourning clothes? (Page 31)It’s a little joke and the audience will luff.

ACT 3

1. What impression do you get of Miss Prism in Act 3? Take all the evidence into account - the temperance beverage, the three volume novel and so onI think she is really stupid, you would never put your kid in a handbag. I think she is very careless. When Jack/Earnest gives her his handbag she doesn't realize that he is the kid until he tells her. 2. What reason do you think Jack might have for refusing to give permission for Cecily to marry Algernon other than the explanation he gives (page 60)?It looks like he think he has to take care of Cecily and that Algemon maybe isn't good enough for her. He also uses this against Aunt Augusta to get her permission to marry Gwendolon.3. What difficulty is still unresolved? - though no one seems to mind - at the end of the play?Gwendolon and Jack are closely related. Their mothers are sisters.
