ENROLLMENT OF PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES AT NOVA: WOODBRIDGE CAMPUS

Introduction This report is one in a series of documents that present trends in the enrollment of public high school graduates at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). This report shows specific information on enrollment trends of public high school graduates at the Woodbridge Campus.2 In addition, the report presents general demographic data on students attending high schools located in the Woodbridge Campus service area. For this report, the Woodbridge Campus service area is defined as Prince William County, therefore there may be an overlap in service areas between campuses. Section I of the report consists of three parts. Part I presents enrollment patterns of Prince William County public high school graduates for the years 1996, 2000, and 2003. Part II presents information similar to that in Part I; however, the NOVA enrollment data is presented by high school. Part III indicates the number of Prince William County residents who were enrolled in Virginia institutions of higher education in Fall 2000 and Fall 2004. Section II provides a demographic profile for each public high school located in the Woodbridge Campus service area. The profiles include the number and proportion of graduates enrolled at NOVA, the proportion of students by race, SAT scores, the percentage of students receiving discounted (reduced) or free lunch, and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) scores. The data contained in this report can be used to aid the College in identifying enrollment trends by campus for specific cities, counties and high schools. The demographic factors listed for each high school in Section II can be used to explain differences in attendance patterns between high schools with extremely high or low representation at NOVA. With this data, the College can target specific areas or high schools that are poorly represented at NOVA.

2 Please refer to the Appendix for a complete list of all PD8 public high school graduates (2003) who attended NOVA in the 2003-04 academic year.

Summary

This report presents information on the enrollment trends of public high school graduates at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). Specifically, the report describes the historical enrollment patterns of Prince William County public high school graduates enrolled at NOVA. In addition, this report provides some demographic information on public high schools located in the Woodbridge service area. Between 1996 and 2003, the number of Prince William County public high school graduates enrolled at NOVA increased from 576 graduates to 656 graduates. During the same time period, the number of Prince William County public high school graduates who attended the Woodbridge Campus increased. Despite an increase in number, the proportion of Prince William County public high school graduates attending the Woodbridge Campus decreased from 72% in 1996 to 66% in 2003. In 2003, the majority of graduates from C.D. Hylton, Gar-Field, Potomac, and Woodbridge high schools, who enrolled at NOVA, attended the Woodbridge Campus. In contrast, the majority of Brentsville District, Osbourn Park, and Stonewall Jackson high school graduates who enrolled at NOVA attended campuses other than Woodbridge. Forty-two percent of Prince William County residents, who were enrolled in a Virginia institution of higher education in 2004, attended NOVA. In 2003, there were seven public high schools from Prince William County whose graduates attended NOVA. Between 19% and 35% of the graduates from these high schools attended NOVA during the 2003-04 academic year. The data contained in this report can be used to assist the College in identifying enrollment trends by campus for specific jurisdictions and high schools. With this data, NOVA can target specific areas or high schools that are possibly under-represented at the College.
