ABOUT US

Since 1978, Fayette Senior Services, Inc., (FSS) an independent, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, has been providing a wide array of life -en-riching services to Fayette County residents age 50 and better. Fayette County, Georgia, is home to one of the fastest growing senior populations in metro Atlanta – and the age 60+ population segment is projected to grow an astonishing 450% by 2040. This statistic alone makes our mission — to make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical well-being of older adults — all the more critical. By fostering independence, improving quality of life, and enhancing the community connection, the programs and services we provide are an essential part of our community.

Not-for-profit FSS enjoys a unique public/private partnership with Fay-ette County government. Through this agreement we provide a variety of supportive services such as Meals On Wheels, Transportation, In-home Personal Care/ Homemaker Services, Care Management, Information As-sistance, and more. We could not do that without our government partners; however, we believe it is our responsibility to complement the public sup-port to ensure we can continue serving Fayette’s seniors for generations to come. Therefore, we feel it’s important to note that less than half of our revenue comes from sources other than federal, state, and local govern-ments.

Fayette Senior Services is recognized as a model of sustainability and social entrepreneurship among peer organizations and nongovernment funders. Although we are proud of this recognition, we could not do all that we do without the support from charitable donors, Center members, volunteers, grantees, and the community that so generously supports our fundraising efforts.

The aging transition can be paved with a broad spectrum of challenges. However, it can also prove to be rich with opportunities. The key to “ag-ing well” is knowledge. When it comes to addressing those unique needs, Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center is the one-stop shop for empowering older adults to live well and age well.

Our Life Enrichment Center in Fayetteville is uniquely different from tra-ditional senior centers. Our beautiful facility is a vibrant place where adults age 50+ come to socialize with friends, enjoy a great meal in our Ultimate café, re-energize their bodies, exercise their minds, and lift their spirits.

To make sure our programs and activities are within easy reach to more seniors, we are proud to have established a community partnership with the city of Peachtree City. We now offer many new programs and activities in Peachtree City at the Gathering Place (next to “The Fred” Amphitheater) and at our newest facility, McIntosh Place. We’re adding new classes and activities each month during our expansion to PTC, so stay tuned for more!

We are proud to be making life better in our community. The Fayette Senior Services Staff

When You Need a Little Help From Some Friends...We offer supportive services that make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical well being of older adults by preserving their indepen-dence, improving their quality of life, and connecting them to the community.

Meals On WheelsMeals on Wheels is a needs-based program for

homebound, or semi-homebound, seniors who are unable to provide themselves with regular nutritious meals due to physical or financial challenges. The service also connects homebound seniors to the community through daily social contact, which also helps to ensure their well-being.

Ani-Meals To many homebound seniors, having a pet is a

source of companionship and comfort. The AniMe-als™ program is designed to give our Meals On Wheels clients a little help with the cost of pet food to make sure that maintaining that important bond isn’t an added burden.

STAR Program (Seniors Together After Retirement)

Our STAR program (Seniors Together After Retire-ment) offers individuals 60 and older an opportu-nity to come together for socialization, recreational activities, health and wellness classes, and a nutri-tious meal in our Ultimate Cafe. Transportation to and from the Center may also be available to eligible participants.

Transportation For older adults who no longer drive, getting to

essential medical appointments, to the pharmacy, to church, or to the grocery store can be a challenge, putting their health and well-being at risk. We pro-vide safe and affordable door-to-door transportation options. Wheelchair assistance available.

Information & Assistance Our certified Information & Assistance Specialists

are the gateway to connecting older adults with the right community resources or providing information to address their specific needs.

In-Home Personal Care/Homemaker Services This service enables older adults to remain liv-

ing independently by providing compassionate care from trained personnel who perform simple home-maker and/or personal care tasks, such as light housekeeping or assistance with bathing. Delivered with the utmost personal respect and dignity, our services can also bring much needed respite to caregivers.

Care Management Our professional staff of social workers helps

older adults make informed decisions to enhance independent living and quality of life. Our Care Man-agers offer consultations, assessments, and follow-up to assist individuals and families in planning and care. We also provide invaluable support to caregiv-ers.

Adult Day Care We contract with a trusted and licensed local pro-

vider of adult day care services that offers a caring environment focused on the individual’s physical and emotional well-being, as well as social and rec-reational activities. Transportation is available.

Medical Equipment Lending We lend gently used medical equipment to individ-

uals, families, and caregivers. Equipment is loaned on a first come-first served basis.

Home Repair Services Our Tool Team helps older adults who are either

physically and/or financially unable to perform mi-nor, routine home maintenance tasks and repairs. The Tool Team also specializes in disability addi-tions, such as grab bars.

Eligibility requirements apply for some programs. Some services may be provided free of charge (tax deductibledonations welcome) or based on a sliding scale of income. Contact Lyn Thomas, our Information Specialist, at 770-461-0813.

March for Meals...

Today there are over 8 million seniors in the United States who are facing the threat of hunger. Georgia ranks number 9. Our Meals On Wheels program seeks to ensure that home-bound seniors in our community do not go hungry. While not everyone can volunteer or donate financially to Meals On Wheels, one thing we can all do to combat senior hunger is raise awareness about the issue.

March For Meals is a national campaign held during the month of March, initiated and sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Associa-tion of America, to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of local communities. Mayors For Meals Day is a component of March For Meals that utilizes the involvement of local Mayors and other local elected officials.

We are happy to share that this was our sixth year participating in the March for Meals Com-munity Champions Week campaign. During the week of March 17-21, 2014 Peachtrree City Mayor Vanessa Fleisch, Peachtree City Coun-cil Members Kim Learnard and Terry Ernst, Fayette County Commisioner and Mrs. Charles Oddo, and Fayetteville Councilman and Mrs. Paul Oddo, Jr. came out to show their support for Meals On Wheels. Each official was teamed up with a volunteer and together they delivered meals to recipients. The officials have the op-portunity to talk with recipients and learn first-hand the importance of Meals On Wheels to a home-bound senior.

Thanks to our Mayors and City Council Mem-bers for taking time out of their busy schedules to participate in this event and raise awareness for Meals On Wheels!! We also want to say a big thanks to all our volunteers who allowed the officials to ride along with them to deliver the meals and for showing them the ropes!

Going for the gold with Mary Plant By: Jamie Bender.

From speaking to Mary Plant only once, it is quite easy to tell that it makes her more than happy to be able to give to her community. Mary has delivered Meals on Wheels for almost 8 years now. She is also a dedicated volunteer to other causes in Fayette County and surrounding areas. One of the things that keeps her most busy is her position on the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta.

Mary says that besides volunteering, she just likes to focus on being a good wife and mom. The Louisville, Kentucky native came to Peachtree City 19 years ago with her husband, Mike, for the job he had at the time with Turner Broadcasting. Together, they have 2 children. They

also have a dog, Domer. Mary and Mike are focused on raising great kids, who do chores, and respect others.

Mary is a great role model for her kids, just as the people she grew up around were for her. Her mother delivered Meals on Wheels for 45 years. This is one of her great motivations that she has to give back. She knows that she was blessed with much knowledge and the ability to do many things, so just because she’s a stay at home mom doesn’t mean her gifts should go to waste. She is happy to be able to use those many gifts to help make the world better.

In addition to volunteering, Mary loves to exercise, doing outdoors activities, and traveling. She has always had a love of sports and participated in many from a young age, swimming perhaps being the one she was best at. Mary was a member of the U.S. Olympic team that boycotted Moscow in 1980. Needless to say, she was unable to win a medal that year. However, in 1984 in Los Angeles, she won 3 gold medals. In 1988, she brought home one bronze and one silver medal from the Olympics in Seoul, Korea. Over her years as a com-petitive swimmer, Mary earned the name “Madame But-terfly” and set quite a few world records that wouldn’t be broken for up to 19 years.

Mary is an overall great person that simply loves to help others. She is one of the many Meals on Wheels drivers that we are more than happy to have on our side and we will be forever thankful for all that she does.

Martha Teal has been coming to Fayette Senior Ser-vices since it has been at 4 Center Drive. She had re-cently retired from her job at the GA Department of Hu-man Resources, and needed something to fill her hours. She decided that the senior center looked like a pretty nice place to spend some time. She became a member in January 2009 and has loved it every day since.

Little did Martha know that she’d meet someone at Fayette Senior Services who would become such a good friend. Diane Hamilton retired early from her career as a banker and quickly got bored at home. She read about Fayette Senior Services in The Citizen and knew it was time to join. In March 2009, she did. She attended an aerobics class that Martha was in and the pair hit it off immediately.

If you have been coming to Fayette Senior Services a while, you know that Martha and Diane are quite the entertainers (whether scheduled or not). They have been in several plays at the center and were even The Supremes for a social. If they aren’t on the program for an upcoming event, but you need a good laugh, you can catch them sitting in the lobby with a group of friends after line dance a few times each week.

In addition to line dance, you can find them in aero-bics, Zumba, stretch class, or volunteering at the front desk. Other than coming to the center, the ladies and their friends enjoy traveling, eating, and going to con-certs. They’ve even gone on an Alaskan cruise along with 2 other friends who they met here.

Great friends are hard to come by, but these ladies seem to have it down. Martha drives at night because Di-ane can’t see [well]. Diane sometimes cooks for Martha because she can’t (or doesn’t like to) cook. There are so many other things that they do for one another and their friendship will surely be everlasting.

member spotlight Matt Ruck and Jerry Peltier are two people that you’ll always see together at Fayette Senior Services. They met 9 years ago at one of their housing development’s monthly parties. After finding out that they live only 6 houses down from each other, it was easy for them to become friends. Both of the men are from Ohio. Jerry is from the Dayton area and Matt is from the east side of Cleveland. Both Jerry and Matt also have wives named Nancy. Jerry has 3 children and 6 grandchil-dren. Matt has 7 children and 14 grandchildren.

In addition to monthly parties, their housing develop-ment also gets thier neighbors together one Tuesday each month for breakfast. Well, Matt and Jerry couldn’t remember which Tuesday they were supposed to go to breakfast, so they decided that they’d go every Tuesday. They’ve also added a Tuesday night movie, Friday evening dinner, and a Friday night movie to their regular schedules.

They also come to the center together several times each week. Jerry volunteers at the front desk and Matt works in the garden. They go on most of the bus trips we offer and they go to all the presentations except the “artsy stuff.” If there isn’t a program scheduled that day, you might still see them at the center just to have lunch.

Jerry and Matt recently received the nickname “The Comedy Team” from a group attending Name That Tune at The Gathering Place. The pair weren’t very knowledgeable about the tunes being played. They an-swered each question confidently with “The Beatles!” They got every question wrong and got zero points for the game that day, but had a good time and kept the others in attendance entertained.

The guys plan to continue their weekly routine for as long as they can. They also hope to go to Amelia Island some day and to tour the submarine base on St. Mary’s Island. Matt’s personal bucket list also includes a trip to Australia. Until then we’ll continue to see their friendly faces here at Fayette Senior Services every week and for that, we are glad.
