Welcome to QED2019-20

The ethos of QEDQEGS Enrichment and Development (QED) is designedto add that vital edge to what is already a high octaneacademic diet.

Top universities and employers are crying out not just for high grades butalso for those sparks of creativity, resilience, teamwork and leadership whichdifferentiate the best from the rest; QED is designed explicitly to foster these.Every boy at QEGS, large and small, will be involved on Wednesday afternoons.

It is a chance for them to customise a small corner of their timetable bychoosing from a wide range of activities led predominantly by QEGS staff.Above all, we hope that the boys really enjoy QED and perhaps unearth that hidden talent which might otherwise lie dormant!

The mechanics of QEDEach QED activity consists of a 7 week block. During theacademic year boys will be able to take part in up to fiveQED activities.

Q1 commences near the start of the Autumn Term, with Q2, Q3, Q4 and Q5running through the remainder of the year, roughly as follows:Q1 September/OctoberQ2 November/DecemberQ3 January/FebruaryQ4 March/AprilQ5 May/June

Some activities, due to their very nature, will only run during certain Qs,but the majority could run all year round, dependent on uptake.

Page 3: ENRICHMENT & DEVELOPMENT 2018-19 2019-20 · 94. Voluntary Work: Guided Reading 95. Voluntary Work: Hospice An opportunity to support local primary aged boys with their reading

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Each boy will choose a number of QED activities, dependingupon his Year Group:

Years 7 to 10 will complete five QED activities during the academic year.

Year 11 will complete four QED activities (Q1 - Q4) allowing them to utiliseQ5 for GCSE revision.

Year 12 will complete four QED activities and follow a bespoke UCAS course in Q5.

Year 13 will complete four QED activities (Q1-Q4) allowing them to utilise Q5for A level revision. Years 12 and 13 do have the opportunity to select off-site, Alternative Approved Activities via the AAA scheme in discussion with their Heads of Year.

Senior team sports will run as normal on Wednesdayafternoons as part of QED.QED will complement our hugely successful Senior Team Sport programme. All squad members will be expected to participate in their sport and will need to liase with the member of staff i/c of their sport to ensure their inclusion. In addition, there will be the opportunity to participate in other sports and activities. Boys do not need to select their individual sporting activities, these will be communicated separately but they should still select ten options for the year in addition.

Next stepsCarefully read the wide range of choices on offer, payingparticular attention to the Q in which the activity is availableand any age-specific criteria. These are clearly highlightedfor each QED activity.

The cost of the majority of QED activities will be covered by the normal school fees. Some specialist activities may, as you would expect, attract additional costs and these are clearly highlighted (cost per QED). Payment details will be communicated once places are confirmed for each QED activity. Please select your choices via the relevant Firefly pages choosing your preferred Q1 to 5 options, plus a selection of reserves just in case.
