This is achieved through a systematic approach that focuses on physical comfort, reading proficiency, aural awareness, theoretical understanding, and on the interconnectivity of these skills. Preparatory Level focuses on the acquisition and understanding of the rudiments of piano playing: posture and hand position, keyboard topography, intervallic reading, and basic concepts of pulse, rhythm, and meter. It is built around three skills: reading (notation and symbols), listening (aural awareness), and physical fluency (comfort and dexterity), arranged in a progressive manner throughout five eNovations, A through E. Preparatory Level Overview: eNovation A: Playing on the Black Keys eNovation B: The Musical Alphabet eNovation C: Reduced Staff Reading (Intervals 2nds - 3rds) eNovation D: The Grand Staff (Intervals 2nds - 4ths) eNovation E: Five-Finger Patterns (Intervals 2nds - 5ths) Special Features: Instructional Videos: In each eNovation (comparable to a unit), you will find all the instructional videos for that unit on the main topic page. This generally includes a video on a technical topic and one on a rhythm topic. Other videos discussing theoretical topics may also be presented. These should be practiced without looking at the keyboard to develop keyboard visualization ability as well as tactile keyboard feel. Listening (Aural): These drills build aural awareness of rhythm, melodic direction, and intervals. Because they are so closely tied to the intervallic content of each eNovation, students are encouraged to make the eye-ear connection required for success in music reading and playing. Reading (Visual): These progressive drills allow students to apply the basic technical, musical, and rhythmic elements of each eNovation. In eNovations A and B, students begin their reading experiences with unstaffed finger numbers and directional reading of note names. In eNovations C and D, they are introduced to a two-line reduced staff followed by the grand staff. Accidentals and selected major and minor five-finger patterns are taught in eNovation E. Intervallic reading is stressed, with the gradual introduction of 2nds through 5ths spread throughout the levels.

eNovativePiano – Lesson Plans for eNovations A - E Learning the Basics

eNovativePiano offers a holistic curriculum designed to develop well-rounded musicians.

Preparatory Level Overview: eNovation A: Playing on the Black Keys eNovation B: The Musical Alphabet eNovation C: Reduced Staff Reading (Intervals 2nds - 3rds) eNovation D: The Grand Staff (Intervals 2nds - 4ths) eNovation E: Five-Finger Patterns (Intervals 2nds - 5ths)

Special Features: Instructional Videos: In each eNovation (comparable to a unit), you will find all the instructional videos

for that unit on the main topic page. This generally includes a video on a technical topic and one on a rhythm topic. Other videos discussing theoretical topics may also be presented. You should view these videos before proceeding to the core elements and application lessons. Instructional videos may also appear on specific lesson pages.

Core Elements-Application Pairing: Each eNovation is built on a core elements-application pairing.

Core elements—aural, tactile, visual, and intellectual—provide foundational tools that are then applied to a variety of skill areas such as ensemble, improvisation, and repertoire.

Core Elements: Throughout eNovativePiano, you will encounter a series of recurring drills. These progressive drills, described below, encapsulate the key elements taught in each eNovation.

• Keyboard Awareness (Tactile): These drills build tactile awareness of intervals and notes on the

keyboard. These should be practiced without looking at the keyboard to develop keyboard visualization ability as well as tactile keyboard feel.

• Listening (Aural): These drills build aural awareness of rhythm, melodic direction, and intervals. Because they are so closely tied to the intervallic content of each eNovation, students are encouraged to make the eye-ear connection required for success in music reading and playing.

• Reading (Visual): These progressive drills allow students to apply the basic technical, musical, and rhythmic elements of each eNovation.

Core elements: cont.

• Rhythm (Tactile): Rhythm drills provide a systematic approach to meters and the rhythm patterns

commonly associated with them. Basic rhythmic notation of notes and rests, and the time signatures of 4/4 and 3/4 are covered in this level. Audio accompaniments, provided in two tempos, contribute to the development of the student’s pulse and enhance the overall learning experience.

• Technique (Tactile): These progressive drills are designed to teach fundamental technical elements including tactile awareness of intervals within a five-finger position, finger independence, and basic articulations—legato and staccato.

• Theory: (Intellectual): Theory lessons provide the intellectual understanding required for comprehensive musicianship. Look for integrated musictheory.net drills starting in eNovation D.

Applications: The applications “apply” the key elements introduced in each eNovation in a functional and appealing presentation, and at the same time, reinforce previously learned skills. Applications include:

• Ensemble: A variety of ensemble experiences are available in this level including multiple piano

ensembles and duets.

• Improvisation: Structured improvisational activities allow students to develop musicianship and hone their creativity while employing theoretical concepts they have learned.

• Repertoire: The repertoire in eNovations A-E consists of original compositions and arrangements

by the authors of eNovativePiano. These pieces have been carefully composed to conform to the technical requirements of each eNovation. Repertoire are offered in different keys and are arranged in order of difficulty within each lesson.

• Lead Sheets: The basic skills used in reading lead sheets are presented beginning with eNovation

D, paving the way for comfort and fluency with popular and other non-classical styles.

• Transposition: eNovativePiano employs a multi-key approach and encourages students to think in intervals, patterns, and different keys.

How to Use These Lesson Plans

Each eNovation consists of a series of lessons detailed on the following pages. Although it is not necessary to complete all core elements and applications in each lesson, the objectives of each lesson should be mastered before continuing to the next. The amount of time that it takes to complete a lesson will vary with the abilities of the students and is not intended to coincide with any specific number of classes.

Begin each lesson by viewing or assigning the instructional videos. Then, proceed to the core elements. In the lesson plans, these appear in a suggested order. When students have shown sufficient mastery, proceed to the applications that are relevant to your curriculum.

eNovation A: Playing on the Black Keys

Summary: This eNovation introduces the topography of the piano keyboard through a variety of activities on the black keys.

Key Elements: • The Two- and Three-Black Key Groups

• Finger Numbers • Pulse and Tempo • Counting Basic Rhythms (whole, half, and quarter notes and rests) • Dynamics: forte 'f' and piano 'p'

eNovation A: In this eNovation, students will become familiar with fingers numbers, the topography of the keyboard, the concept of pulse, non-metrical counting of basic rhythms, and the dynamics, forte 'f' and piano 'p.' Students will be introduced to unstaffed reading of finger numbers and rhythms, both hands separately and hands together. Developing a steady pulse is essential to successful completion of the applications, all of which may be performed either with a partner or with an accompanying audio file.

The Finger Dexterity Drill contains two exercises. In the first, students will develop dexterity in playing on the strong fingers of each hand (2,3,4) using a rhythm pattern that allows for slower and faster finger motion. The second exercise is a two-handed drill that requires basic coordination when passing the melody from one hand to the other and back.

eNovation B: The Musical Alphabet

Summary: This eNovation focuses on playing on the white keys of the piano and on learning the musical alphabet.

Key Elements: • The Musical Alphabet

• Five-Finger Position • Metrical Counting • Time Signatures: 4/4 • Touches: Legato and Staccato

eNovation B: In this eNovation, students will learn about the white keys and should understand the relationship of the musical alphabet, forwards and backwards, to pitch and direction. The concepts of meter and time signature are introduced, and students will learn to count metrically in 4/4 time. Students should understand five-finger position and be able to keep their fingers on consecutive white keys in a relaxed manner.

The Keyboard Topography Interval Drill and the Matching Pitch and Rhythm Aural Drill should begin this eNovation, as they present the intervallic content in a tactile and aural format prior to reading. The Keyboard Topography Drill should be practiced without looking at the keyboard to foster keyboard visualization which leads to fluent reading. The Keyboard Orientation Drill is a challenging activity combining hand and finger number drill with note and interval identification on the keyboard.

Students will be introduced to unstaffed directional reading of notes in five-finger position. Legato and staccato articulations are included in Reading B. Students should learn the appropriate symbols for these articulations and perform accordingly. The repertoire, Sneaky Pie, features staccato articulation.

eNovation C: Reduced Staff Reading (Intervals 2nds – 3rds)

Summary: This eNovation focuses on the intervals of the 2nds and 3rds and reading on a reduced staff.

Key Elements: • The Reduced Staff • Intervals: 2nds & 3rds

• Rhythm Extensions: Ties and Dots

• Repeat Sign

eNovation C: In this eNovation, students learn about melodic and harmonic 2nds and 3rds applied to a variety of drills and applications. In eNovations C - E, the Keyboard Topography Interval Drills, the Matching Pitch and Rhythm Aural Drills and the Visual Interval Flashcards provide a multi-modal learning combination that is a hallmark of the eNovativePiano curriculum. It is recommended that this combination of drills is taught first.

In this eNovation, students should grasp the basic concept of intervallic reading on a two-line reduced staff. Reading C, in addition to drilling on melodic and harmonic intervals, provides a review of the notes on the keyboard, dynamics, and legato and staccato articulations. Students will learn the concept of extending a rhythm through the use of ties and dots.

In the Legato Coordination Drill, student should focus on and master legato playing within and between the hands. These skills should be applied in the subsequent repertoire.

eNovation D: The Grand Staff (Intervals 2nds - 4ths)

Summary: In this eNovation, students will be introduced to the grand staff and the treble and bass clef landmark notes. The interval of the 4th is added and students will learn to count in 3/4 time. Students will also have an opportunity to further develop two-handed coordination through tactile drills and repertoire.

Key Elements: • The Treble and Bass Clefs • The Grand Staff and Landmark Notes

• Intervals: 4ths

• Time Signatures: 3/4

• Dynamics: mezzo-forte 'mf' and mezzo-piano 'mp'

• Dynamics: crescendo/diminuendo signs

eNovation D: In this eNovation, students will learn to use landmark notes in identifying the notes on the grand staff. They should become fluent recognizing and playing intervals through the 4th by practicing the keyboard topography drill, the aural playback drill, and the interval flashcards. Because this is the first experience on the grand staff, Reading D1 is focused on 2nds and 3rds only. Students should notice that each drill begins on a landmark note. Reading D2 adds the intervals of the 4ths and includes examples that do not begin on staff landmarks.

Students will also learn to count and play in 3/4 time and should be able to differentiate between the metrical feel of 3/4 and 4/4 time found in the Reading Drills and in the Repertoire.

The three exercises in the Mirror Fingering Drill allow students to develop finger dexterity through mirrored fingerings, while serving as a review of legato and staccato. In Exercise 3, students will learn to play legato between the hands, a technique that is required in the repertoire, I’ve Been Working on the Railroad, and repertoire. Lullaby, with an active accompaniment, requires an even higher degree of two-handed coordination.

Students will be introduced to lead sheets and will learn to realize the chord symbol using the root tone of the chord. The ensemble activity, scored for multiple pianos, helps to build a sense of pulse while playing in a larger group. In addition, students will learn to recognize and play both melodic and harmonic 2nds-4ths which are applied in two improvisations. The improvisation Saturn’s Rings makes exclusive use of harmonic 4ths while the improvisation Winter Dream encourages the use of two hands playing a legato melody.

eNovation E: Five-Finger Patterns (Intervals 2nds - 5ths)

Summary: In this eNovation, students will learn about whole and half steps and about the construction of major and minor five-finger patterns. The interval of the 5th is added in this eNovation.

Key Elements: • Accidentals • Whole and Half Steps • Major 5-finger patterns: F, C, G, D, A • Minor 5-finger patterns: A, D, C, G • Intervals: 5ths

eNovation E: In this eNovation, students will learn about whole and half steps, accidentals, and how the major and minor five-finger patterns are formed. Students should understand the difference between the major and minor patterns and should be able to differentiate between major and minor sound quality. They will be expected to use the interval of the 5th in reading, playing, and improvising. The sound of major five-finger patterns is drilled in the aural drill and in the improvisation.

Students should further develop two-handed coordination in selected major and minor five-finger positions through more advanced drills and applications. The Musical Texture Drill focuses on dexterity and coordination. The Rhythm Coordination Drill requires two-handed rhythm reading and fosters hand coordination. In Reading E2, students are should focus on reading hands together. Students will drill on aural recognition of intervals in minor positions and will have the opportunity to use minor patterns as a basis for improvisation.
