Buckle everyone properly – it’s the law All motor vehicle occupants must be secured in a safety belt or harness or in a child restraint system. Children must ride in rear- facing child safety seats until they reach both age 1 and 20 pounds. A child weighing less than 40 pounds must be restrained in a child safety seat. Children weighing over 40 pounds must continue to be restrained in child safety seats or booster seats until they reach age 8 or 4’ 9” in height and the adult lap and shoulder belt fit correctly. Wear your helmet All motorcycle and moped operators and passengers must wear motorcycle helmets. All bicyclists and their passengers, skateboarders, scooter-riders and in-line skaters must wear approved bicycle helmets if under 16 years of age. PROHIBITED IN OREGON: Handheld texting and talking on a cell phone Drivers should pay attention to the important task of driving — distracted driving kills. Oregon law prohibits handheld texting and talking on a mobile communications device while driving. If you must attend to something other than driving, pull into a safety rest area, parking lot or safe place. Obey posted speeds When weather or other conditions factor in, Oregon’s basic speed law requires drivers to determine the reasonable and prudent speed to drive depending on the road; it does not allow drivers to exceed the posted or designated speed. Don’t follow too closely; give bicyclists space One of the most common factors in Oregon crashes is following too closely. Maintain your space: 2-4 seconds or 1 car length per 10 mph is a good start. Don’t cut quickly in front of another vehicle, especially commercial vehicles. When approaching a bicyclist sharing the lane, remember the difference in speed and SLOW DOWN. On roads where speeds are more than 35 mph, the drivers may only pass a bicyclist when it’s safe by driving to the left of the bicyclist and leaving enough distance between them so as not to make contact with the bicyclist if the bicyclist should fall into the driver’s lane of traffic. Move over for all emergency vehicles e “Move Over” law states that if you are on a roadway with two or more lanes for traffic in a single direction and you are approaching an emergency vehicle, tow truck or roadside assistance vehicle that is stopped and displaying warning lights: MOVE OVER safely into another available lane. OR, if you can’t safely change lanes, slow down to a speed that is at least 5 mph below the posted or designated speed. In all cases, motorists must try to provide as much room as possible for the emergency vehicle, tow truck or roadside assistance vehicle. Respect the Cone Zone, 24/7 Orange is your clue to slow down and be alert: watch for slowing vehicles in advance of highway work zones, and be aware that lane restrictions may apply. Obey all posted speeds. Be extra cautious in safety corridors “Safety Corridors” are stretches of highways that have higher- than-average fatal and serious injury crash rates. e corridors are marked with signs, and drivers should turn on headlights and be extra cautious. Don’t get stuck in the NO-ZONE e “No-Zone” represents the danger areas around trucks and buses where crashes are more likely to occur; truck drivers can’t see you! e right-side blind spot is doubly dangerous because trucks and buses make wide right turns. Give them plenty of room! Report erratic driving You may be saving a life when you report a driver who is swerving, weaving in and out of traffic or otherwise appears impaired. Pull over to a safe location and call 1-800-24-DRUNK (243-7865) or in an emergency, call 911. You are required to report most crashes Drivers and witnesses are required to stop at a crash and provide names, addresses and other information to those involved. An accident report must be filed with DMV within 72 hours when there is an injury or death and in certain other conditions, even if there is not an injury or death. See full details at www.oregondmv.com. Take a break at a safety rest area! Oregon’s highway rest areas provide much-needed safety breaks for busy motorists. Approximately 29 rest areas across the state are managed by teams who focus on traveler information, premises security and maintenance. All facilities offer restrooms and trash receptacles. Potable water, free coffee, picnic tables, walking paths, pet exercise areas and travel information kiosks exist at many of the rest areas across the state. PLEASE INQUIRE LOCALLY. Snow Chains & Traction Tires When traveling through Oregon in winter, you must carry traction tires or chains and use them when required, as indicated by signs posted along the highway. Under some conditions, four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles may be exempt. Chains include link and cable chains and any other device that attaches to the wheel, vehicle or outside of the tire that increases traction in ice or snow. A traction tire is a studded tire or other tire that meets the industry definition as suitable for use in severe snow conditions; these tires are marked with a three-peaked mountain and a snowflake. Studded tires can only be used in Oregon between Nov. 1 and March 31. Road Conditions Some roads in Oregon may close for winter or at any time due to inclement weather. PLEASE INQUIRE LOCALLY. Wear your helmetAll motorcycle and moped operators and passengers must wear motorcycle helmets. All bicyclists and their passengers, skateboarders, scooter-riders and in-line skaters must wear approved bicycle helmets if under 16 years of age.

PROHIBITED IN OREGON: Handheld texting and talking on a cell phoneDrivers should pay attention to the important task of driving — distracted driving kills.

Don’t follow too closely; give bicyclists spaceOne of the most common factors in Oregon crashes is following too closely.

Move over for all emergency vehicles The “Move Over” law states that if you are on a roadway with two or more lanes for traffic in a single direction and you are approaching an emergency vehicle, tow truck or roadside assistance vehicle that is stopped and displaying warning lights: • MOVE OVER safely into another available lane. • OR, if you can’t safely change lanes, slow down to a speed that is

at least 5 mph below the posted or designated speed.

In all cases, motorists must try to provide as much room as possible for the emergency vehicle, tow truck or roadside assistance vehicle.

Respect the Cone Zone, 24/7Orange is your clue to slow down and be alert: watch for slowing vehicles in advance of highway work zones, and be aware that lane restrictions may apply. Obey all posted speeds.

Be extra cautious in safety corridors“Safety Corridors” are stretches of highways that have higher-than-average fatal and serious injury crash rates. The corridors are marked with signs, and drivers should turn on headlights and be extra cautious.

Don’t get stuck in the NO-ZONEThe “No-Zone” represents the danger areas around trucks and buses where crashes are

more likely to occur; truck drivers can’t see you! The right-side blind spot is doubly dangerous because trucks and buses make wide right turns. Give them plenty of room!

Report erratic drivingYou may be saving a life when you report a driver who is swerving, weaving in and out of traffic or otherwise appears impaired. Pull over to a safe location and call 1-800-24-DRUNK (243-7865) or in an emergency, call 911.

You are required to report most crashesDrivers and witnesses are required to stop at a crash and provide names, addresses and other information to those involved. An accident report must be filed with DMV within 72 hours when there is an injury or death and in certain other conditions, even if there is not an injury or death. See full details at www.oregondmv.com.

Take a break at a safety rest area!Oregon’s highway rest areas provide much-needed safety breaks for busy motorists.

Road Condition NoticeSome roads in Oregon may close for the winter season or may close periodically due to inclement weather. PLEASE

INQUIRE LOCALLY.

Snow Chains & Traction TiresWhen traveling through Oregon in winter, you must carry traction tires or chains and use them when required, as indicated by signs posted along the highway.

Road ConditionsSome roads in Oregon may close for winter or at any time due to inclement weather. PLEASE INQUIRE LOCALLY. Under normal conditions, all roads shown on this map are passable with a two-wheel-drive passenger vehicle and feature pavement or, at minimum, gravel surfaces. See local visitor centers or agencies for more detailed maps and to inquire about local road conditions.
