SURVIVAL, HOPE AND HEALING

Iraq war veteran and poet Brian Turner and one of choral music’s hottest young composers, Jake Runestad, capture what it means to survive 21st- century war in their award-winning Dreams of the Fallen for chorus, solo piano, and orchestra. Unique among music representing the struggles of war, Dreams of the Fallen gives voice to the impact violence has on soldiers long after they leave the battlefield. Join us for the Midwest premiere, featuring VocalEssence, internationally-renowned pianist Jeffrey Biegel, and the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. The concert will also bring hope and healing to the soldier’s experience through beautiful and mystical music including Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Vaughan Williams’s Toward the Unknown Region.

A mix between The Real Group, Manhattan Transfer and The King Singers, Voz en Punto sings spirited and juicy arrangements of Mexican folk songs that will put a smile on your face and have you clamoring for more!

Swing in the holiday season with VocalEssence and Nils Lindberg’s A Christmas Cantata for chorus and big band. Blending jazz-infused style with traditional melodies, Lindberg’s cantata is an “iridescent medley that invigorates, inspires and swings in equal measure” (allaboutjazz.com). World premieres of two contest-winning carols for choir and trumpet will blow you away, and familiar carols for voices and brass will have you singing all the way home.

CREATIVE AND CAMPYCalled “ebullient, grand and unusual” and “a high camp masterpiece” by critics, Four Saints in Three Acts changed the course of American opera when it premiered in 1934. Set in 16th-century Spain, the playfully humorous Four Saints traces the lives of saints on Earth through a witty libretto by Gertrude Stein and a stunning score by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Virgil Thomson. VocalEssence reimagines the ground-breaking piece on the stage of the Goodale Theater. From Stein’s famous “Pigeons on the grass, alas” to “the last act, which is a fact,” this wildly inventive work pushes the boundaries of opera and leaves you with a smile on your face.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Supported by an Arts Tour grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, members of the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Don Shelby as Mark Twain go on the road to Northern Minnesota to celebrate life on the Mississippi River. Through choral music and the spoken word, VocalEssence takes listeners on a musical journey of the past and present—choral masterpieces, favorite folksongs, traditional spirituals, and Americana—all paired with the words of Mark Twain.
