Changing Learning, Rethinking Literacy

• Contrary to popular belief, every generation’s teachers complain about the writing acumen of their students.

• Andrea Lunsford, Professor of Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University, argues that “we’re in the midst of a literacy revolution the likes of which we haven’t seen since Greek civilization” (qtd. in Clive).

New Literacies

• Furthermore, adds Lunsford, “technology isn’t killing our ability to write. It’s reviving it—and pushing our literacy in bold new directions” (qtd. in Clive).

• In other words, our students are not writing less; they’re writing more, but they are writing according to nonacademic rhetorical situations.

• Unfortunately, though, we are assessing their nonacademic writing by the standards of academic writing.

Page 18: “Enhancing, Engaging, and Exciting: Intersections of Information Literacy, Technology, and Professional Writing” Presented by Kimberly M. Gay, M.L.S. Tonya

Affecting HBCU Students: New Literacies, Same Problems

• According to Adam Banks, the metonym of the digital divide reflects the racial separation in America; thus, for people of African descent, the sub-par accessibility and mastery of technology mirror the problems of socio-economic and racial disenfranchisement throughout American society.

Page 19: “Enhancing, Engaging, and Exciting: Intersections of Information Literacy, Technology, and Professional Writing” Presented by Kimberly M. Gay, M.L.S. Tonya

The Social Factor

The popularity of social networking sites proves that people want to communicate with others online (Alexander 198); therefore, we must take that social inclination and combine it with professional development.

Page 20: “Enhancing, Engaging, and Exciting: Intersections of Information Literacy, Technology, and Professional Writing” Presented by Kimberly M. Gay, M.L.S. Tonya

Playing it Forward

Many times students are not playing with their

cell phones, laptops, and other electronic

devices; they are using them as conduits to

information and communication for the

betterment of their scholarly and professional

selves.

Page 21: “Enhancing, Engaging, and Exciting: Intersections of Information Literacy, Technology, and Professional Writing” Presented by Kimberly M. Gay, M.L.S. Tonya

Instructional Technology on Another Level

• Not only do we have course management systems, like WebCT and Blackboard, or course assessment systems, such as TrueOutcomes and Tk20, we have Web 2.0 technologies to help us prepare our students for academic and professional success.

Page 22: “Enhancing, Engaging, and Exciting: Intersections of Information Literacy, Technology, and Professional Writing” Presented by Kimberly M. Gay, M.L.S. Tonya

Get in Where we Fit In!Ten years into the twenty-first century, we have a fast-paced,competitive, and sometimes tenuous world of information technologies in which some teachers—especially many within our HBCU communities—have shied away from the pedagogical pull of electronic media. However, the regressive nature of economic, environmental, and global catastrophes calls for a continuing growth of professional writing courses so that the teaching and learning of written discourses will not get left behind. To combat these issues, our professional writing course has embraced strategies for learning effectiveness, retention, promotion, and cost savings.

The Role of the Course

Based on a junior-level course entitled

ENGL 3043: Professional Writing for

Electronic Media, the end of this

session will illustrate the need for

students to engage concurrently in

writing development for professional

contexts and social networks.
