remote access for Your JacE

Our EIPR-V wireless router provides a secure VPN connection to the

JACE in conjunction with our BAScloudVPN cloud service.

Traveling to a job site to conduct a service call can be expensive and

unproductive especially when the problem can be resolved remotely.

Having remote access to the JACE is extremely important with saving

time and improved troubleshooting responsiveness. There are several

ways this can be accomplished with either a wired or a wireless

solution that does not compromise network security.

With the JACE’s two Ethernet ports, one port can be utilized for

the building control network and the second port for remote

communications. Connecting the second port to our EIPR-V router,

when connected to our BAScloudVPN cloud service, provides access

to the JACE from an office or other remote locations.

When using more than one JACE, all of the second JACE ports can be

networked together to create a remote access network that can be

accessed through the EIPR-V. The EIPR-V can communicate via cellular

networks, through the addition of a USB cellular modem, or via its

Ethernet port - if Internet access is available.

Offload Your JACE’s MS/TP Traffic While the JACE has the ability to route MS/TP traffic over one of its

serial ports, handling the overhead of the BACnet MS/TP token passing

protocol burdens the JACE’s CPU. This results in increased CPU usage

that could be used for other functions and calls for the potential need

to change to a higher-powered JACE.

The JACE CPU usage can be decreased by offloading the MS/TP

token passing to external BACnet MS/TP to BACnet/IP routers. This

is especially important if you require the JACE to be connected to

multiple MS/TP networks.

Both our BAS Router — BACnet® Multi-Network Router and

BASrouterLX — High-Performance BACnet® Router provide the

solution. The units offer stand-alone routing between BACnet

networks such as BACnet/IP, BACnet Ethernet, and BACnet MS/TP —

allowing the system integrator to mix BACnet network technologies

within a single BACnet inter-network. In addition, the BASrouterLX

provides a high-speed processor, with advanced features that include

MS/TP slave proxy support (allowing auto discovery of MS/TP slaves),

MS/TP frame capture and storage for use with Wireshark®. Up to 50

BBMD entries can be made.

Offload Your JACE’s Modbus TrafficAlthough the JACE has the ability to communicate Modbus RTU overone of its serial ports, Modbus points cannot be discovered like BACnet points requiring manual configuration of each Modbus register. By using external Modbus RTU to BACnet gateways, with pre-defined Modbus device profiles, configuration of Modbus registers is just as quick as configuring BACnet points allowing to greatly reduce the time to configure Modbus devices in the field.

Our BASgatewayLX — Modbus to BACnet®Gateway provides a 10/100 Mbps Modbus TCP or BACnet/IP Ethernet port and an opto-isolated Modbus EIA-485 serial port for Modbus RTU or Modbus ASCII devices. Up to 30 Modbus serial devices (represented by up to 1000 polled points) can share the single Modbus port on the BASgatewayLX.

The virtual routing feature in the BASgatewayLX allows each

connected Modbus device to appear as an individual BACnet compliant

device which can save configuration time if using multiple identical

Modbus devices.

A device profile for each Modbus type device is needed and Contemporary Controls maintains a library of common device profiles. If one is not available, we will be glad to provide it upon request. In addition, custom device profiles can be uploaded to the BASgatewayLX. Using web pages and a resident database of common Modbus device profiles, Modbus data points from Modbus Serial or Modbus TCP devices can be mapped to BACnet objects.

Niagara Workbench™ is an indispensable solution for programming and

maintaining a Niagara system however, it is seldom used with field

controllers because the controllers do not incorporate Niagara.

With Contemporary Control’s line of Sedona controllers, the

BAScontrol20 and BASremote, the Niagara Workbench™ tool can be

used with both Niagara and Sedona controllers greatly simplifying

commissioning/programming – thus making the Niagara Workbench™

a one-tool solution.

Our BAScontrol20 — 20-point Powered by Sedona Framework™ field

controller provides a direct connection to an Ethernet network. It is

the perfect solution for structured wiring systems; the BAScontrol20

is BACnet/IP compliant with a B-ASC device profile. Having a resident

Sedona Virtual Machine (SVM), the unit is freely programmable using

tools mentioned - Niagara Workbench or Sedona Workbench™.

Our BASremote — BACnet/IP Controller/Gateway BASremote provides

the system integrator a flexible building block when integrating diverse

building automation protocols or when expanding the number of points

in a building automation system. The BASremote supports BACnet/

IP and Sedona Framework™ (SOX). For small systems, it can operate

stand-alone. For larger systems, it can communicate to supervisory

controllers via Ethernet.

The BASremote can also act as a gateway for Modbus-RTU/Modbus

TCP devices to BACnet.

Easily Network Your JACE

The JACE has two Ethernet ports. Protocols such as BACnet/IP and

Modbus TCP utilize Ethernet. Ethernet offers a choice of speed - up to

1GB - and a choice of cabling options - twisted pair and fiber optics.

Contemporary Controls produces a line of Ethernet switches that fit nicely

in the panel with the JACE.

Our cost-effective, compact EISK5-100T, 10/100 Mbps 5 port switch, can

expand the JACE’s number of connections – allowing for the configuration

and /or programing of the JACE without needing to remove cables from

the JACE. The 100 Mbps performance on the ports accommodates a

range of control devices and workstations commonly found in automation

projects. For 10 Mbps legacy devices, the switch will automatically reduce

its port-speed accordingly.

Our diagnostic switches, which includes our EISK5-100T/H diagnostic

switch, easily allows tools such as Wireshark® to capture the

communications between the JACE and any connected Ethernet devices.

Standard switches will not allow protocol analyzers such as Wireshark to

capture most of the communications between Ethernet devices.

The EISK5-100T/H diagnostic switch will allow a PC running Wireshark®

to capture all communications between the JACE and connected devices.

Managed switches allow you to manage your network. Our line

of managed switches provide diagnostic information for Ethernet

communications and allow for the creation of redundant Ethernet

networks for greater reliability.

With the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). the JACE can be

used to monitor Ethernet networks. All Contemporary Controls’ managed

Ethernet switches support SNMP. The managed switches incorporate an

SNMP agent that provides a wealth of information on the health of the

network. With a SNMP client or Network Management Station, you can

query the SNMP agents in managed switches — turning the JACE into

a manager.

For wireless network communications, our EIPR-E router can be used

to create a WiFi access point for the JACE allowing WiFi devices to

communicate with it. The EIPR-E IP router is perfect for automation

systems and for job sites that require IP router wireless access. Wireless

connectivity is accomplished through the USB port.
